Bring on the Spurs!

The best way we can put the 6-0 drubbing at Citeh behind us is to respond with something positive - and something positive against Spurs at Fratton at the weekend would make the league picture look healthier again...

Of course we do play Chelski in the league cup at Fratton on Wednesday night, so a reaction in this game would be good but I think this was always likely to be a game when we saw several changes and is most likely to be the competition that we pay less attention to this season. Do not get me wrong I do want us to win this game, and would be delighted to see us win the league cup but in the list of priorities this one - unfortunately - will be the one that is at the bottom, as it is for so many clubs these days.

Its best we do not dwell on the Citeh thrashing too much, but at the same time we cannot simply gloss over it as if it did not happen. You get one of those days from time to time, but to a degree we also had one of these days against Chelski at Stamford Bridge in our first league game of the season - although, and not to discredit Citeh who were good, Chelski were a different level of goodness on that day as poor as we were. As said Citeh were good against us yesterday and they are a decent side but no matter what anyone says they are not 6-0 better than us, if - at this point in time anyway - they even are better than us, the New Year may well change this big time!

Why we were so poor I do not really know, maybe the 3rd game in a week was too much for some but Citeh were in the same boat... Very few can come away from that mauling with any credit, and having not gone to Eastlands this season relying on radio and then highlight coverage does not really help, but I would say that only Sean Davis - and he had to go off injured early, Lassana Diarra, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe can come out of this with any credit as they kept going, kept trying and at least had a go, the rest worryingly on the whole did not want to know and more worryingly perhaps seemed to throw in the towel far too early with them willing to write the game off, shrug the shoulders and move on... I will not single people out, but I think a few need the shirt taken away from them as a result, they should not be allowed to simply carry on as if nothing has happened we have others in the squad so bring them in and let them show they want to be here, if they do those that almost did not care might start to again, if they know they are not a 'shoe-in' for their place in the starting 11.

Selection, formation and tactics go wrong sometimes but we do not go from having this spot on to way off course in one game so although we must be angry with this result and must be frustrated we do not need, or want to hear people suddenly going from saying what a fine side we are to a poor one. This is an eye opener for some but we cannot have gone from a really good side at 3pm yesterday to a poor one at 5pm - granted on the day we were of course but in the bigger picture we are not, a wakeup call and lesson can be, and hopefully will be, learned here.

Harry Redknapp, and he knows this, might also look at this and realise that with this many games in a week, which hopefully will be a regular thing, he cannot keep picking the same players game in game out... You have a squad for a reason, whilst it might be smaller than he would like or even expected we still have enough quality in it for players to come in and deputise, and then put pressure on for a more regular place.

Expect changes for the league cup this week, which probably would have happened anyway, but if those that come in and perform then they should be seriously considered for the following game - if players do not return to the side for Spurs then it is up to them to then force their way back in, if they sulk because they feel their 'assured place in the team' has gone then they are not the sort of players we want, or at least not what I want. If you feel that way more often than not you are not playing for the pride of the shirt, you are playing for others reasons and this will see debacles like we saw at Citeh happen again as a result.

Yep, it was a very bad day at the office, and I feel for those that paid to go and watch it - I have been there, as have most of us so we know what it is like when you pay your money and get a performance like that - but we show anger, frustration, discontent and so on now and then move on without dwelling too much. We do not forget this, but we hope - and this is down to the players attitude and commitment - this is not something we see much of in the future.

I look forward to every Pompey game I go to, the fact that I cannot get to Fratton this week for the Chelski game disappoints me but I am counting down the days until we face Spurs on Sunday and I expect a response, and hope that we get it - we will be demanding it anyway, and hopefully the players do care enough to want to give this...

I think in a sadistic sort of way, it might be just as well we got beaten by such a big gulf rather than just say 2-0 as that may deemeed to be semi expected and an 'oh well they are a good team and at home' type of view. There weren't many shining lights yesterday and that showed ultimately in Jonhson been taken off. It was only a matter of time that his being caught totally out of position was punished. I know he is great at pushing forward and I know I will get a bit of stick for even daring to question his ability, but fact is when playing with four at the back and as a right back defender, thats the principle job DEFEND. There will be obviuos changes on Wednesday that will regarded as probably being done as its only the C Cup, but I would like to think Harry would tell them they have been dropped because they simply they were below standard. In that group I would include James and give Ashdown a shot and maybe also for Sunday as well. Rant over. Come on lads, I still love you really, but lets bounce back and not see that sort of performance again. PUP

History does tell us that teams who are suffering from lack of wins and goals normaly put things right against Pompey! Especially Spuds so im keeping my fingers crossed.

I don't know about Bring on Spurs, defending like that on Sunday and they must think they have 3 points in the bag already! The next 10 days could set out our prospects for the rest of the season.

No need to panic, was it 10 years ago we got stuffed 6-0 at Barnsley??? We were really cr4p then. Spurs havn't got going yet but they will sooner or later. We have to make sure we are mentally & physically up for that one, I'm sure JD will be. Maybe it's taught us a lesson? Squad rotataion?

squad rotation is the harshest lesson i think - or hope - that we will learn, we have a squad so use it! yesterday was bloody awful, buts its done so we move on and forget - the best way to do this is to perform against chelski and then spurs...

I think harry got confused by the term "squad rotation". rather than using difernet players in the correct positions, he seemed to just rotate round where everyone was playing. lesson learnt, bring on spurs (and no, I dont want us to play our first team agait chelsea - it will only tire them out more)

i reckon that if we play some fringe players like mvuemba , nugent and kanu in the caup the diarria and defoe and crouch can be rested for spurs because we need to pick up in the league to be honest the carling cup is not important but uefa cup and league is so play the fringe players and let the best ones rest !!! Please can someone explain to me why we wasted all that money on Crouch and Kaboul, they have both been appalling this season. I left the game on Sunday furious that these players could turn in a performance like they did. They were a disgrace and need to take a long hard look at themselves, everyone up here thinks we are rubbish, and i must agree that yesterday we were really really bad, and i wasted another wad of money on them. Nugent, Kanu, Pamarot, Ashdown and Arnie along with Ben Sahar and Little need to play against Chelsea, and hopefully show some spirit. As for Sol i have seen Milk turn quicker!!

Thank God I'm not the only who thinks Crouch has been rubbish since he signed. I keep hearing that he's playing his part, helping Defoe to look good, but I've watched him a lot the past couple of games and he just doesn't look interested to me. Far too relaxed, no bite in him at all. When he loses the ball, or doesn't quite get there, it doesn't seem to bother him. If he hasn't got the passion, I'm beginning to wonder why he so desperately wanted first team football.

crouch has never particicually impressed me - except i one game for liverpool (I think in the champions league) against arsenal, where he played as a loan striker. other than that, He can't head the ball to save his life... and that seems to be what harry wants to use him for!

I haven't come to such a negative impression re Crouchy and have thought that he is trying to get at the ball but this often results in him coming too deep to get it because he's not getting it knocked forward for him in the air which would be the logical thing to do. Coming deep and concentrating on ground play does not seem to be the way to ge the best out of him. Another thing he does which can irritate me is he gets caught ball-watching and not running into space quickly unless he is trying to set up a one-two. I think it's obvious that if you buy someone like Crouchy, you need to build the team around giving him the service he needs and we haven't really got that.

Merlin, No really we're not interested. Our @sses are still hurting from a drubbing in the Premier League, which counts, and we're in Europe for the first time ever. A carling cup game against anybody is just another pain in our already sore @sses. But it is a brilliant opportunity to 'rest' (drop) a lot of first-teamers, who need both to be rested and to be dropped for once. Its an excellent game for some of the fringe players to get match experience, and I hope they're told that if they play well, they play on Sunday.

I really cant feel the magic of the "carling cup"... although I could probably do with some of the magic of a little bit of carling... we could do with a decent game, just to get that result "out of the system" though
