Redknapp on Pompey's comeback

Harry Redknapp told sky sports how pleased he was with our 2nd half showing against Boro yesterday, which saw us come back from 1-0 down to eventually win - deservingly so! - 2-1.

The 3-5-2, which although saw us pretty much dominate the game, could not see us create enough openings for the front men and changes were made at half time to see us revert to a 4-4-2 and these changes made a difference, particularly Nadir Belhadj who linked up brilliantly with Armand Traore on the left: 'if you're coming back from 1-0 down at half-time it's never easy.

'But at half-time I thought we could still get back into it. In the second half we really got at them.

'The two lads down the left-hand side were fantastic - Belhadj and Traore showed great pace and skill and were willing to get down the sides to pick Crouchy out up front with Defoe a real threat and Glen got forward on the other side with John Utaka. It was just a much better second half.'

Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe also earned his praises, with the pairing seemingly getting better by the game: 'they're learning to play together and we're learning to play with Crouchy.

'You've got to drop quality balls up to him and if you can drop good balls up to him then he can hold it up and bring Defoe into play. That's how he wants to play.

'I thought we got the blend right, especially second half today, we had a bit of width, we got crosses in, and we always looked a threat.'

Everyone was good, and to be fair in both halves, but Lassana Diarra was the dogs nuts! The fella was unbelievable yesterday and gave one of the best performances that I have ever seen from a player - in a Pompey shirt or otherwise!

By the sound of things, our second half performance was incredible. If we can switch formations about, we will leave other teams guessing how we are going to play, and make it very difficult for them to play against us...

We played well in both halves really. We just created more chances playing 4-4-2 and the defence looked more comfortable with only two centre backs. But yes use different formation at different times in games and keep the opponents guessing! And then there was the Belhadj introduction - looks some players but needs to slightly curb his enthusiasm in the tackle.
eastneydave
lol agree belhadj definatly needs to be carefull with his tackles, the one on the edge of the box springs to mind, but otherwise great performance bring on Europe! =)

Fantastic performance all round - including the Manager - well played Arry!

As is becoming my custom, i avoided all footie media from 2.00 and waited to watch Pompey interactive on football first. Half time 1-0 down i went to release some of the Fullers fluid intake and said to my imaginary friend " I cant see us loosing this" The second half changes were excellent we continued to bash em up. Because of the lack of response from my imaginary friend, i had to go to tell my 17 year old son who was working onsome of his Manga art. He was pleased that i was pleased, but my imaginary friend knows more about football.

ps. All week ive thinking that Pompey might be a target for this indian billionaire fellow who is touting round for a Prem Team. Then whilst at the Co-op this morning-after taking Rebus and Bella to the park (that's my dogs, not my other children)I was choosing what tabloid to buy scanning them for PFC articles when the People said There is an Arab group seriously linked with Pompey. We will have to wait and see

I thought we played brilliantly, Gandor Snr actually stood up when the goals were scored and actualy admitted that he had enjoyed the game!
Gandor
Why the boos at half time? We were dominant in the first half and just needed to continue the good work in the second and yet we get booed off. Did I miss something?
Pompeyscum
I never heard any boos, where did they come from?
Gandor
Know what I think the boos were for. I think it was about the crowd situation. The over zealous (again) stewarding. I mean, I sit in the family section....hardly ever going to be riot central, is it. Well, anyway, we were treated to 5 knuckle heads in bright orange coats standing right next to us, in the disabled loo gangway. Anyway, highlight of a match for my youngest is when the Pompey players celebrate a goal by the Fratton end/ South stand corner flag, right in front of us. Well, these bruisers in orange decided they were going to stand between us and them, blocking my nippers view! Quite what do they think is going to happen in the family section? Anyway, the boos I feel were directed at the club more than the team. No Johnny again, saw him tying his teddy bears up halfway through first half, but no bell or drums made the crowd quite dull.

great change from harry, it threw boro who had clearly trained for one formation. that flexibilty wil help us in tougher games

The boos rang out for the Referee at half time, not for the players. I don't know what match he was watching most the time but it wasn't the Pompey vs Boro one. A great debut by Belhadj although he needs to learn to shhot rather than be quite so generous with the ball! Utaka played very well, but again needs to learn to shoot again when in a decent position.

Lots of options to choose from now. Every team we will play will give us a problem. Hopefully we will have the ability to transform the game in our favour. As for the ref, he was about 25 & this was his 2nd prem game. Saying that, it doesn't matter what age or experience they have, they are poor far too often.
storagematt
Thanks for clearing that up. I saw the refs first prem game last week (hull v wigan I think) and he had a good one. He got some decisions wrong with us but I like the way he conducts himself on the pitch, not like a sargeant in a parade ground.
Pompeyscum
Distin had a shoulder to shoulder tackle with someone whilst chasing a ball back to the Pompey byline. Ref gave a foul against him. I think this might happen a little this season because of C. Ronaldo/Fergie's complaints after the Man Utd F.A semi-final.
