Appiah to Pompey a no go?

Unfortunately it would seem that our chances of bringing Stephen Appiah to Fratton are fading, if not gone...

The Ghanaian captain is being quoted as basically saying that he wants to go to a London club and has the option of a couple, Arsenal and West Ham - and will go to the one that 'offers him the best deal'. Although Bayern Munich, clearly not a London club, are also being 'heavily linked'.

How true quotes are you never know, and I am not sure if he means 'best deal' in terms of most money offered? Although 'if' money is what he means this is not what we want anyway do we? He is a fantastic footballer and would make a great signing, on a free even better, but we do not want a mercenary on our hands do we. If money is not the issue, but the big draw of London is it is a shame that he would not appear to realise just how close Pompey is to the capital, but there you go...

Harry Redknapp had confirmed an interest, but said two London clubs were in for him so it would be tough for us. Funds are tight, as we know, so as much as bringing Appiah in would be fantastic, if we cannot do this then we will still be ok - we might be shortish in numbers but we will be alright, we just need to ensure that we rotate at the right times to keep people fresh and ready to play in needed.

Until a deal is done you never know do you, but my thinking is that the chances of us signing him now appear to be much more unlikely than they might have a few days back - but with Pompey I think we have all learned that you can never say never...

As you say, until the deal is done you never know.

It would be hard to compete with Arsenal if they are in the frame but West Ham??? Well if he ain't interested in us, his loss.
storagematt
Fine, clear off...i'm sick to death with mercenaries.
pentonpompey
we dont need someone with a character like that. who the hell wants to live in london anyway! id laugh if he goes to west ham ... a team that dont know where theyre going, and arsenal ... coz hes gonna get first team football isnt he? lol.
pompey--pessimist
you never know he might get a game at arsenal, hes only got diaby and denilson to contend with in the centre for that spot alongside fabreegas, and he has alot more experience than them. its a shame though, as appiah would fit into our squad well and hes been linked with us for ages!

He should come to Pompey, as at least here he will have a manager that is actually from London.. Can't get more London like then old 'arry. He is dreaming if he thinks he would get in the Arsenal squad... Would be a wasted transfer.
.Andrew.
If its only money he is interested in, then he won't care if he sits on the bench at Arsenal or if West Ham are a rubbish destination. Good luck to him, I say, and lets get on with what we've got, which isn't bad and which Harru will make the most of.

He's a fantastic footballer - without qestion. In fact, I think he WOULD make the arsenal team if he goes there - at least the squad - and he is the right type of player for them too - so that is where I expect him to go. West ham would be the wrong choice - as if I were him, I would certainly want to be playing in europe, as he is near the end of his career now (i think) - so europe will be a big draw. If we sign him, great, if not - it's not a massive loss though.

Appiah will not play for Arsenal, not that he is not good enough, but the fact that today Wenger has said that they are not in for him, so we are still in the running with West Ham.
pompeyyong
after Essien's injury he may well turn up at Stamford Bridge!
merlin
What on the number 72 Merlin?
pentonpompey
News is that Arsenal have pulled out of the running so if he wants the premiership and wants London.. That only leaves West Ham...
Chix
He's too injury prone anyway and we have davis to play in his position.

"He's too injury prone anyway and we have davis to play in his position." - I think I sence someone trying to soften the blow... he is a very good player - do not under-estimate that, so he would be quite a player to loose to west ham...
pompeycarpet
Appiah likes to get forward not just a defencive midfield player would fit in our team great, but as merlin said with Essien's injury rumours link Chelsea now.
