Unfortunately it would seem that our chances of bringing Stephen Appiah to Fratton are fading, if not gone...
The Ghanaian captain is being quoted as basically saying that he wants to go to a London club and has the option of a couple, Arsenal and West Ham - and will go to the one that 'offers him the best deal'. Although Bayern Munich, clearly not a London club, are also being 'heavily linked'.
How true quotes are you never know, and I am not sure if he means 'best deal' in terms of most money offered? Although 'if' money is what he means this is not what we want anyway do we? He is a fantastic footballer and would make a great signing, on a free even better, but we do not want a mercenary on our hands do we. If money is not the issue, but the big draw of London is it is a shame that he would not appear to realise just how close Pompey is to the capital, but there you go...
Harry Redknapp had confirmed an interest, but said two London clubs were in for him so it would be tough for us. Funds are tight, as we know, so as much as bringing Appiah in would be fantastic, if we cannot do this then we will still be ok - we might be shortish in numbers but we will be alright, we just need to ensure that we rotate at the right times to keep people fresh and ready to play in needed.
Until a deal is done you never know do you, but my thinking is that the chances of us signing him now appear to be much more unlikely than they might have a few days back - but with Pompey I think we have all learned that you can never say never...
