'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Uefa cup tie at Fratton kicks off at 6pm!

TV again rules the roost, with Pompey kicking off the uefa cup tie with Vitoria at Fratton - yep Fratton, not the tie in Portugal - at 6pm on Thursday 18th September. The return leg is at 9.30pm - our time I presume?

Peter Storrie has told the Pompey Site that he realises that this is 'inconvenient' for some but with the money on offer, which is not that great in the uefa cup - in the early round at least, we had to accept this: 'this has been a difficult decision and we fully understand that kicking off at 6pm will not be convenient to some of our supporters and regret the inconvenience.

'It is a fantastic achievement for the club to be playing in Europe for the first time, but the UEFA Cup is not the pot of gold that is the Champions League.

'We have to meet all our own expenses and the only way we can capitalise on our success is through television revenue for our home games.

'Kick-off times vary enormously in the UEFA Cup so this is not unusual. All the sides who have played in the competition have at one time or another played outside the traditional time.

'And, from next season, when the competition format changes, all games will be required to kick off at either 6pm or 8pm.

'The earlier kick-off time for the Vitoria match will hopefully be more attractive to families and our younger fans who might not have been able to come to a later kick-off.

'The supporters' groups we have talked to understand the situation and we hope all Pompey fans will too.

'Having reduced admission prices for all cup games at Fratton Park this season, we still hope to sell out and create a very special atmosphere for what will be an historic evening for the club.'

What sort of time for a game to kick off during the week is 6pm?

I am always interested to know just who 'the supporters groups' are that are consulted, as they always seem to agree with things that the majority - in my opinion - would not...

Although to be fair though as said we need to capitalise on the extra revenue TV will generate, as we would not get much otherwise so it is not really Portsmouth Football Club we should be angry with it is five - and other TV broadcasters - and uefa. They should be truly ashamed of themselves here for yet another blatant disregard to the fans, with them viewing the 'TV audience' as the more important one!

No doubt this early kick of time has been imposed so another game can be broadcast later in the evening without the TV viewers having to miss out, or make a choice... Not that I am knocking those that only watch on TV of course - there are varying reasons for this.

Tickets are only £20 - but no details on these have been released yet - which is not bad but what sort of attendances are we going to get for games at this time?

How many 'regulars' that deserve this moment of our first ever uefa cup game 'might' have to miss out due to the greed, and blatant disregard to the attending fan of the TV world - disgusting!

Again we cannot kick off at Pompey so much here, it is TV and uefa that need to look long and hard at themselves - but they will show no remorse or sorrow will they, they never do...

Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! And I thought we had some logistics headaches for the away leg!!!!

I'll struggle now, but must try and make the effort - who knows it could be the one and only time this year for European football at FP.

Guys, I'm a fairly recent convert to the Pompey cause (ironically, because I thought the club respected its fans and treated them fairly) but I really feel for all of you who have put in years of supporting Pompey through thick and thin - I feel you've been kicked in the nuts. I am utterly f***ed off at this. Had planned to leave work in Farnham early anyway to get there for what I thought would be a 7.30pm or 8pm kick-off. Jesus Christ!!!! Doesn't the club care one bit about its fans? Another example of football selling its soul to TV. Sell the game to TV by all means but a 6pm kick-off? What planet are these people on? UEFA, Five; you are heartless knobheads who don't care one jot about the true fans. As for Storrie's lame excuse that the earlier kick-off time is more family-friendly......don't make me laugh.

in my 'orginal' draft i wrote 'well im glad the families can make it' in an ironic manor tim - so know what you mean...
pompey could have stood firm and said, you know what the fans mean more so we will miss out on tv but lets be honest we wouldnt do this - but its the usual 'tv bosses dont care' thing here, so they are the major culprits here!

I notice though thatas of next year ALL UEFA cup games will be played at 6:00 and 8:00 to give better TV rights. I am annoyed at this as it will mean having to take a half day off work when i don't have many days left. Will I miss the game though - not a chance and the club know that!

It's getting bloody ridiculous, We now have football 7 days a week on television, I assume that in the future we'll be able to watch it 24/7. Premier league games will be played one after the other to ensure that people can watch every one each week. Just another example of how money has ruined the game we love.

Is the Milton Arms open at 4? Otherwise i really will be peeved!

The price of success is at our expense!!! Ninjatim, as with many of the older brigade, we have put in decades of support through thin & thinner. It's really only been these last 5-6 years we can call successful years.

If this is what success brings a total disregard for the fans who up til the last few seasons PFC boasted were their 12th Man & now are doing all they can to p*55 us all off .surley this being our 1st game in europe in the clubs history should be for alll the true fans to enjoy without lossing more money for time off work but no PFC sell out to the TV company ,as for thier 12th they dont give a F**K about us anymore its give me MONEY MONEY MONEY at least in the dark old days we were apriciated but not any more

Gone are the days when I would ring the club to check kick off time and get the reply 'What time can you get here?' The other problem is it comes right in the middle of the rush hour and will mean the city will become log jammed. I will get there somehow even though I will have to take leave to attend a home game!! Only the second time in 50 years!!
eastneydave
some early finishes to see your UEFA debut then :-)
merlin
very good point dave. our ground is in the middle of the town, so rush hour effects us more than a club that has their ground out of town. surely uefa could have taken this into account when deciding whether portsmouth or somewhere with easy access like manchester city and astin villa.

In fact, in the days of multiple cup replays, where the first replay would be on the Wednesday immediately after the Saturday game, the police would insist on kick-off time of 7.30pm or late on the basis of crowd safety so as to avoid people turning up late at the turnstiles and causing a crush.
NinjaTim
lets just hope we dont have many problems as a result of this early kick-off...
pompeyrug
well i think i said on another article i cant do this game now. i could have made up a couple of hours with a 3pm finish /with a 3 and a half hour journey up 6.30 a roll and a pint in the brewers, now i will have to leave at lunch time...cant do it. I will have to watch on TV. Is the away game being broadcast on TV too?
