At midnight tonight the transfer window finally slams shut - thank god! - and although we should not expect many - if any - arrivals, we should be seeing some departures but Lassana Diarra, and any of our other star names 'should not' be the ones on the way out...
According to Harry Redknapp, with what he has told The News, as much as he did not want to sell players we have had to, we had to - as we know - because the books needed 'balancing'. This is still the case but he says that all of the players that featured against Everton at the weekend are going nowhere, but he is looking to offload one or two, as he still needs to do this.
We might sign a player on loan, but we should not be expecting much activity coming through the Fratton gates, which to be fair I do not think that many of us do anyway: 'I'm looking at bringing in maybe a loan or something if I can get one, that's it really.
'If anything, we're looking to sell somebody to get some money.
'I've lost three of the midfield which played at Wembley in the FA Cup final, Muntari, Kranjcar and Mendes. Two have left and one is injured.
'I didn't really want to sell any of them but you have to balance the books.
'If I sell somebody to get some money in before the deadline it leaves me short with numbers so I could do with getting a loan in if I can find a foreigner.
'I'll not selling any of the side which played against Everton, though.'
I sincerely hope that those that featured against Everton all stay, as the majority of that side will be our most influential players this season.
Djimi Traore, Richard Duffy, David Nugent and John Utaka appear the names most likely to leave - with the suggestion being these are the players we most want to offload and have been trying to do so all summer, yet they have dug their heels in and stayed thus far...
Traore is not going to get a look-in this season is he, so if he really wants to play football and does not just want to sit on the bench and pick up his wages while his career ebbs away he should go, and he has had options, which 'might' still be open to him?
What can you say about Duffy? Harsh I know but the fella is a waste of space! Why the hell we have kept him I will never know, I am amazed that we have never released him in the past. All I can imagine is for some reason he is on a bloody long contract and/or pretty good money so we cannot pay him up to leave! If anyone at all shows an interest, even if he has to leave on a free we should bite the hand off...
I have backed Nugent, and still believe he can become a good footballer but this is not going to happen at Fratton is it, lets be honest! And as much as I have admired his 'I want to fight' thoughts in the past, it is way beyond the point now that the fella accepts he is not part of our future plans... He has a pair of England international strikers ahead of him, when fit - if he ever is! - Kanu will be ahead of him and Ben Sahar would not have been signed on loan if he would not feature at all, that would have been a waste of a loan which could have been used to maybe bring in Shaun Wright-Phillips... As I say I have backed the fella but I cannot even see Nugent getting a look-in in the league cup this season let alone anywhere else, so as sorry as I am to say this it is time for his sake and ours that he went...
As for Utaka, the fact that Redknapp has kept stressing his need for pace on the right wing all summer should be enough of a hint that he does not fancy the Nigerian anymore, as if there is one thing that he has plenty of that is pace - yet he cannot get a look-in either thus far this season. It is 'said' that he has rejected a move to Lille recently, which I am disappointed to hear as although the guy might come good we have heard far too many promises from him without any performances to back this up. He has the talent and ability, but my thinking is will never, ever have the application or commitment required to be a success with Pompey!
One, or more of these guys will hopefully move on today, but 'if' by them not doing so this meant we had to sell a player of more importance to us as a result then I - and I dare so plenty of others Pompey fans - would hold this against them for sometime to come...
Elsewhere, the loan move that Harry Redknapp has spoken about could come in the shape of long term target Nadir Belhadj, with setanta sports saying he will sign on a season long loan.
The Lens left back/left midfielder has been 'linked' with Pompey for most of the summer and the suggestion is that the Algerian has flown into England to put the finishing touches to his loan move.
I have liked the look of the fella, but to be honest I am not convinced that a left back or left winger is what we are really looking at as a priority today, but I guess we have to take what we can, if we can get it today really!
Thoughts on all the above please guys - have your say below...
