Diarra stays, but others go/Belhadj in on loan?

At midnight tonight the transfer window finally slams shut - thank god! - and although we should not expect many - if any - arrivals, we should be seeing some departures but Lassana Diarra, and any of our other star names 'should not' be the ones on the way out...

According to Harry Redknapp, with what he has told The News, as much as he did not want to sell players we have had to, we had to - as we know - because the books needed 'balancing'. This is still the case but he says that all of the players that featured against Everton at the weekend are going nowhere, but he is looking to offload one or two, as he still needs to do this.

We might sign a player on loan, but we should not be expecting much activity coming through the Fratton gates, which to be fair I do not think that many of us do anyway: 'I'm looking at bringing in maybe a loan or something if I can get one, that's it really.

'If anything, we're looking to sell somebody to get some money.

'I've lost three of the midfield which played at Wembley in the FA Cup final, Muntari, Kranjcar and Mendes. Two have left and one is injured.

'I didn't really want to sell any of them but you have to balance the books.

'If I sell somebody to get some money in before the deadline it leaves me short with numbers so I could do with getting a loan in if I can find a foreigner.

'I'll not selling any of the side which played against Everton, though.'

I sincerely hope that those that featured against Everton all stay, as the majority of that side will be our most influential players this season.

Djimi Traore, Richard Duffy, David Nugent and John Utaka appear the names most likely to leave - with the suggestion being these are the players we most want to offload and have been trying to do so all summer, yet they have dug their heels in and stayed thus far...

Traore is not going to get a look-in this season is he, so if he really wants to play football and does not just want to sit on the bench and pick up his wages while his career ebbs away he should go, and he has had options, which 'might' still be open to him?

What can you say about Duffy? Harsh I know but the fella is a waste of space! Why the hell we have kept him I will never know, I am amazed that we have never released him in the past. All I can imagine is for some reason he is on a bloody long contract and/or pretty good money so we cannot pay him up to leave! If anyone at all shows an interest, even if he has to leave on a free we should bite the hand off...

I have backed Nugent, and still believe he can become a good footballer but this is not going to happen at Fratton is it, lets be honest! And as much as I have admired his 'I want to fight' thoughts in the past, it is way beyond the point now that the fella accepts he is not part of our future plans... He has a pair of England international strikers ahead of him, when fit - if he ever is! - Kanu will be ahead of him and Ben Sahar would not have been signed on loan if he would not feature at all, that would have been a waste of a loan which could have been used to maybe bring in Shaun Wright-Phillips... As I say I have backed the fella but I cannot even see Nugent getting a look-in in the league cup this season let alone anywhere else, so as sorry as I am to say this it is time for his sake and ours that he went...

As for Utaka, the fact that Redknapp has kept stressing his need for pace on the right wing all summer should be enough of a hint that he does not fancy the Nigerian anymore, as if there is one thing that he has plenty of that is pace - yet he cannot get a look-in either thus far this season. It is 'said' that he has rejected a move to Lille recently, which I am disappointed to hear as although the guy might come good we have heard far too many promises from him without any performances to back this up. He has the talent and ability, but my thinking is will never, ever have the application or commitment required to be a success with Pompey!

One, or more of these guys will hopefully move on today, but 'if' by them not doing so this meant we had to sell a player of more importance to us as a result then I - and I dare so plenty of others Pompey fans - would hold this against them for sometime to come...

Elsewhere, the loan move that Harry Redknapp has spoken about could come in the shape of long term target Nadir Belhadj, with setanta sports saying he will sign on a season long loan.

The Lens left back/left midfielder has been 'linked' with Pompey for most of the summer and the suggestion is that the Algerian has flown into England to put the finishing touches to his loan move.

I have liked the look of the fella, but to be honest I am not convinced that a left back or left winger is what we are really looking at as a priority today, but I guess we have to take what we can, if we can get it today really!

Thoughts on all the above please guys - have your say below...

Harry has maintaied over the summer that utaka is still "part of his plans" - possibly as a centre forward or as an (expensive) impact sub. Nugent - yes, I think he has potential, yes, I have supported him, and will do when he inevitbly stays at the club - but we now have too many strikers (who would have thought we would EVER have that problem?) and his way back down in 5th place, and may even be behind some of the youth team! I think it's best for everyone if he moves on quietly, as it hasn't happened for him. And as for Traore - maybe him being here helped us get arsenals traore (i think they are related... but possibly not. it's a nice idea anyway) so I have a feeling he will staying...

Don't think those two Traores are related. But will spend today watching Newsnow for 'news' on the wires hoping to hear nothing about our core players. Belhadj can play right as well so would be good utility player and we need them this season. Do we trust Setnata sports though?

As long as we don't sell Diarra, I don't care too much who comes & goes. As well as weaken the team further, it will**** Harry off & God help the likes of Traore, Nugent etc if they are still here!!!

I'd hate to see Utaka leave, as i think he has potential, and at least should be given another season to shine (ala Benjani). Same with Nugent. Utaka & Nugent have good pace (well, when Nugent isn't injured). Good to hear about Diarra as well. Lucky i have a day off work today, or i think the boss wouldn't like the lack of attention from me. Roll on 00.01!!

IS he actually any good? I know he has some pace, but that's about it. But that's all we need on those wings. Sounds good.

...meanwhile man city have just been transfered to Abu Daby (spelling?)... and are setting the target of getting into the top 4. again.

He has good reviews and Pompey's chief scout told HR to go and get him.

yea but this time carpet they might actually get it abu dabi are ridiculous rich and have brought the club out right for around £200 million and are aparently gonna target the 'best' players so the top 4 could quite easily become the top 5. but on belhadj he sounds like a really good player with alot of options on postions

Agree .Andrew, Utaka and Nugent have got potential and pace, but in reality they ain't gonna get much of a chance this season. The possibility of letting WBA have Nugent on loan isn't a bad one if accepts to go, as at least that gets him off our wage bill and him playing football still in the premiership. Still reckon we need a right winger, although it was pleasing to see GJ bing used 'officilally' as a wing back rather than being an out of position right back that he so very often gets cought out at. I have said before that he should be given the chance up field a bit more, which gives us the right balance down the right in my view. Is Little still injured? as I thought he was able to play both sides and be the winger?

I'm not too sure about Nugent's pace - but he certainly seems to work hard, and get in god positions... he just then has a habit of falling over. In regards to man city, I am in truth a little worried about that, as although this season, they cant improve there team much, it is still good, and next season, they could be a truly impressive force! how come they get all the rich billionairs... it's not fair!

agreed i know its not fair and have you heard they apparently have like 10 times as much money as roman abramovich WTF i didn't even know that was possible lol although on a serious not it is worring for the state of the premiership i mean if more oil billions come in its just gonna get stupid with money and some clubs will really be priced out speically championship clubs

Agree with the Nugent to WB loan 110% - Would do him wonders, and would come back with match fitness at the end of it. Not sure why 'arry hasn't tried to loan out Utaka like he has done with Linvoy. But i suppose we need the cover, or we are going to fail in Europe.

I'm not sure that Nugent going would be all that good an idea, yes there are plenty in front of them, but Kanu is prone to injury, Chelsea may not want Sahar cup tied. Assuming we qualify for the group stages of uefa we will have a lot of games to get through. Utaka has pace and talent in abundance which i think we'll see more of once he gets his chance. It takes time for players to settle in a new country. Davis however it looks like he'll have to stay after he forced the club into giving away Pedro. The only players i'd like to see go are unfortunately unlikely to be wanted by anyone.

well, unless he goes on loan to a championship side on loan - when the loan window opens - which i doubt, then he is here until at last january...
