Look's like both teams going 4-4-2 here, interesting considering last season's game both saw us revert to 4-5-1, can we expect an open game today? I had a dream Everton won 1-0, Victor Anichebe off the bench! Good luck
toffeetower
no changes then in the starting 11...disappointed not to see little at least named on the bench - having a chat with my cousin yesterday we both thought that starting with little might give us the chance to get off to a flyer, even if he only last 45 minutes as he does have the ability to deliver a ball, which we have been lacking!
pompeyrug
Think he has gone 3-5-2 IMHO. Kaboul, Distin & Campbell as a back 3, with GJ & Traore as wing-backs.. I really think HR wants to give it a go, and means it when he says "Younes is here to play". Adams & Sol are known to be against wing-backs - not surprisingly due to the success of the back 4, "arms up-offside" and playing it all of their lives - but the lack of width has been a problem - and I think HR sees this as the best compromise. This time (unlike last season), they have given in..?
scott mc
i think thats a 4-4-2 with distin as left back in all honesty. I would have loved to play 3-5-2 last season, and once again, this season, i think that it would give our team a lot more balance - but due to sol and tony being so against it, I doubt harry will have the guts to try it...
pompeycarpet
i like the thought of 3-5-2 - and that is what we have gone i believe, we have kaboul who has pace, so this can work...
pompeyrug
Let's hope we play as well as we did last Monday. Mvuemba to make an appearance in the second half
UKTony
Vitoria SC have a spy at Goodison today, per their website. I wonder what he'll make of it
UKTony
after the youth team won 8-0, lets hope our senior team can better that... now wouldnt that be funny?
pompeycarpet
lets hope the 3-5-2 works, it was promising vs man u, lets get a good game under our belt and a few goals!!!!
jbaker
3-5-2 for me, I reckon Jonno is going to play more wing than back
paultsmouth
we can do them today - lets get diarra off the leach and take it from there...
pompeyrug
he'll enjoy it tony...hopefully!
pompeyrug
actually i hope he wont wont enjoy it, as if he does it will mean we were poor!
pompeyrug
lastest longer than last year!
paultsmouth
Kaboul v Yak sounds a key battle
paultsmouth
yep, but kaboul 'should' be strong enough, fast enough and mobile enough to deal with him?
pompeyrug
Well hes just flattened Vaughan!
paultsmouth
he's another one we need to watch as i reckon this fella could be a decent footballer if he could shake off the injury problems.
pompeyrug
Yessssssssssssssssssssss!
UKTony
Get in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
paultsmouth
yessssss
jbaker
Crouch and Defoe partnership starts here
UKTony
THAT is why crouchy and defoe will be so good for us when we get it right! get in...
pompeyrug
come on - play up pompey!
pompeyrug
9 hours since the last goal - bloody hell
UKTony
Go for the kill lads - get another before half time
UKTony
if anyone lives outside of the quay's area, and cant get it online, then its the feature game on talksport.
jbaker
there you go tony, just mentioned your fact about utaka against citeh - a game i was at :-) - being our last league goal... 9hrs ago!
pompeyrug
so close!
pompeyrug
Defoe sounds like we want him to
paultsmouth
Go Glen Go
UKTony
come on pompey lets make the most of our upper hand at the moment and kill them off - much like tony said.
pompeyrug
according to reading fans we will soon be signing leroy lita. hes not in their match squad...
jbaker
About 4 and half months ago to be honest. And now Howard denies JD a second.
eastneydave
sounds like a good game at upton park. 2-1 already!!!
jbaker
Do we need another striker?
paultsmouth
I thought Lita had alrady left Reading - clearly not
UKTony
lets hope that the other traore we have - no not djimi, but the youth on that we have who is related to armand traore is as good as him, or near to it!
pompeyrug
JAMO!!!!!!!!!
jbaker
Christ that was close!!
paultsmouth
good bless the post and good bless jamo...phew!
pompeyrug
Diop - you're fault?
UKTony
Jamo - England's #1
eastneydave
Oi Everton - in between the white bits is the only thing that counts
UKTony
diop isnt tracking back enough, he was partly at fault for the manyoo goal on monday and would have been partly at fault had it not been for england's no.1!
pompeyrug
yeah i dont think we need another striker. in fact we just need wide midfielders and a temporary creative midfielder to replace kranjcar while hes injured. esp. as lita would cost a significant transfer fund.
jbaker
why would we need lita? the only option would be a loan deal or maybe a swap with nugent...
pompeyrug
Defoe sounds lively, Macloughlin has said he needs a virus every week!
paultsmouth
and diop was one of our stand out players vs man u according to the national press. maybe they underestimate him hugely.
jbaker
^ a few posts above should read 'god' not good, altho it was also good :-)
pompeyrug
to be fair diop has been one of our better players this season - but altho im not a fan he will be better in the middle, much better!
pompeyrug
last time we persevered with 3-5-2 was our promotion season, great games and great memories
paultsmouth
Yak seems to be playing wide; signs that Everton are worried?
UKTony
macca is entertaining enough to listen to isnt he, get him on sky to replace andy gray!
pompeyrug
sounds a cracking game, just what we needed, Kaboul just saved us
paultsmouth
another escape...
pompeyrug
Phew - 2 good chances now
UKTony
diop is wasted on the right. he comes inside too often, leaves gj exposed, and doesnt provide the crosses that crouch needs from a right-sided midfielder.
jbaker
riding a bit of luck at the moment, need to break and get another one
paultsmouth
Closer shaves than Gillette - brilliant
UKTony
Calm down for 5 mins - grab another on 43 - job done
UKTony
sounds like a cracking clearance by kaboul tho...we're inviting too much pressure on oursevles at the moment.
pompeyrug
Sounds like Kaboul is as quick as Yak, good news
paultsmouth
on Skys live table we are 3rd bottom! Hooray!
paultsmouth
amdy faye just got a straight red!!!
jbaker
Quicker than Yak, I reckon
UKTony
that'll do me :-)
we cannot keep inviting this pressure for the next 55mins as we will do well to hold out if we do...
pompeyrug
an inspired tony pulis signing lol!
pompeyrug
2 footer from Faye by the sound of it
paultsmouth
Agreed; we won't be able to defend for that long
UKTony
dont get me wrong we can defend with the best of 'em but you just cannot be looking to sit back for that long can you...not against everton anyway.
pompeyrug
without creativity on the wings then we are just gonna keep having to withstand pressure, which wont do. if all we do is boot the ball up to crouch, then we are gonna keep losing it and inviting everton to come at us. thomas did well last week to take the game to man u. if only he wasnt injured for this game. yessssssssssss
jbaker
Defoe offside again? Surely he's got the pace to start half a yard behind the last defender and still make it.
UKTony
talking of 'inspired signings' traore could be one for us...
pompeyrug
Jonno!!!!!!!!!!!!!
paultsmouth
come on - get in there, play up pompey!
pompeyrug
Get in there
UKTony
and on 43 minutes too
UKTony
and johnson is in my fantasy football team - think defoe is aswell, happy days!
pompeyrug
GREAT goal Johnno!!
eastneydave
tony aka nostrodamus - spelling?
pompeyrug
Keep it tight til half time lads
UKTony
I get the feeling Harry has found the formation to play counter-attacking football WITH 2 strikers
paultsmouth
Chris Kamara confirmed Faye tackle was two footed.
eastneydave
yeah tony, good call. now just predict a 5-0 now.
jbaker
paul - just to let you know i will put a 'brief' match summary on after the game, with a 'full report to follow'...
pompeyrug
Last GJ league goal anyone?
UKTony
v wigan last season, 2-0 win benji the other, both in that last 10mins...
pompeyrug
remeber one against Wigan
paultsmouth
Agreed then Rug!
paultsmouth
and i think you are right about the formation paul, and we can adapt it to 4-4-2 if things get tough going!
pompeyrug
Thanks Rug/Paul
UKTony
is that agreeing with the johnson goal v wigan paul, or agreeing with the 'i'll do a brief summary with the report to follow?'
pompeyrug
Arteta will be the danger man in the second half. Keep him quiet and it'll be even harder for Everton to come back.
UKTony
it might be counter-attacking football, but its very, very risky!
jbaker
our record last year of winning when we went ahead/scored first was second to none wasnt it? i believe it was only derby first game of the season where we failed to win!
jbaker
he who dares...he who dares :-)
pompeyrug
yep, only game that we took the lead we didnt win...everyone that we scored first in we won didnt we.
pompeyrug
if we can hold onto the lead then it really isnt a bad start at all! if we can manage a win at fratton vs boro, then we would be on 6 points from 4, last year we had 4 points from 4 (then we lost our next game vs arsenal, so 4 from 5). and you cant say "but we have played two of the best, because our 4 from 4 last season included man u and chelsea!
jbaker
it hasn't been a bad game so far - although we havnt been great. Everton have played some ice touches, and really should have got at least 1 - whilst we have been lucky to get either of our goal. still - 2-0 up at goodison, i cant conplain at that!
pompeycarpet
hold it for 10-15mins in this half and i reckon we 'can' see it through, and it will be crackin' result...ive said recently that we will get a better idea of how our season will go in the next 4-5 games and i stick by those thoughts.
pompeyrug
Certainly first 10 mins is crucial; hope we don't just sit back
UKTony
Not sure either of our goals have been lucky
UKTony
Bl**dy Halsey
UKTony
jamo. jamo. jamo.
jbaker
sounds a dodgy pen, again! We don't have much luck with these so far this season
paultsmouth
Jamo is the King
paultsmouth
Come on Jamo
UKTony
Englands No 1 - this is going to be our day
UKTony
Jamo - England's #1 I have said that before I think!!
eastneydave
You can't say it often enough, Dave
UKTony
I was agreeing with the Wigan goal Rug, but ok about the summary as well
paultsmouth
who's in midfield guys?
ChrisW
hahaha, rob green saved from jason roberts 3 mins before jamo saved from yakubu. england keepers enjoying saving from ex-pompey strikers!
jbaker
Diop, Diarra, Davis, Traore
UKTony
Diarra, Davies, Diop
paultsmouth
I put Traore at Wing-back
paultsmouth
Do keepers get points in FF for penalty saves?
UKTony
and johnsons also in midfield sometimes too :-)
pompeycarpet
yes, heard he was mobile... :)
ChrisW
god bless jamo - ive said that before aswell :-)
pompeyrug
harry likes is "flowing" formations - last year we played 4-5-2/4-3-3 and this year it looks like it'll be 4-4-2/3-5-2
pompeycarpet
they do in others, dont know about VPFF
jbaker
not sure tony, i know they do in some games - not sure if that is the case in vital fantasy football?
pompeyrug
is that 4-5-1/4-3-3 carpet? i dont think our "twelfth man" at fratton actually counts as a player.
jbaker
Davies is sounding a key man in the middle, wonder if he has played himself back into Harrys good books
paultsmouth
Good save by James; how many times has macca said that this afternoon?
UKTony
yes, that would be 4-5-1... although we all know it's really 4-5-2, the referee can never count!
pompeycarpet
good chance mate, as we're almost down to the 'bare bones' now arent we...
pompeyrug
Yak seems to be sulking - all good for Pompey
UKTony
anichebe could be dangerous, so we better watch him...
pompeyrug
I feel a goal coming
UKTony
let him sulk, suits us fine doesnt it!
pompeyrug
i'm taking bets on how long it will take for harry to give his "bare bones" speach...
pompeycarpet
for pompey i assume tony?
pompeyrug
Can't tell Rug - the spirits aren't that clear
UKTony
glen johnson - clumsy? never...
jbaker
hold 'em off for another few minutes, then smack them on the break
paultsmouth
What spirits are you drinking Tony, try vodka thats nice and clear
paultsmouth
come on glen...you have cost me points now for my fantasy football, or wasnt he booked?
pompeyrug
having vodka myself today...its not clear tho as its got coke with it!
pompeyrug
He wasn't shown a card, whatever that means
UKTony
we're inviting that pressure again...
pompeyrug
Gone 5-3-2? Don't like that
UKTony
Baines seems to be having a lot of the ball, we really need a spell of possesion
paultsmouth
3-0 Yes Yes Yes
UKTony
yes yes yes
jbaker
crouchy, crouchy!!!
pompeyrug
its official the front 2 are a team!
paultsmouth
See my post about 12 up, my spirits are nice and clear!!
paultsmouth
Told you I could feel a goal :)
UKTony
4th anyone?
paultsmouth
crouch's last goal for us was against crewe - against 7000 fans, 7 years ago. It really puts things into perspective doesnt it?
pompeycarpet
the goals for the two will start flowing now...not saying today, but i mean from now on.
pompeyrug
sorry thats meant to say in front of 7000 fans
pompeycarpet
and i changed my prediction from 2-1 defoe and crouch to 2-1 crouch and diarra...at least i will get points for crouchy, come on diarra!
pompeyrug
apparently its defoes goal, he got the last touch. great game for him on the old FF then!
jbaker
Top 2 aside, are we a match for anyone now?
paultsmouth
aaah iv had a mare. of course its his goal.
jbaker
you know my thoughts paul, ive been strong in my thoughts that we will have a good season - and people will soon change there tune...again as said, they next 4-5 games will tell just how good our season could be.
pompeyrug
cheers wisey, i have just cracked open another lager!
pompeyrug
There's that phrase again - good save David James
UKTony
Lager AND vodka, Rug?
UKTony
What's up with Traore?
UKTony
I hope Yak's *****ed off
ChrisW
indeed it is tony, when in rome :-)
pompeyrug
But you're not in Rome :)
UKTony
at least traore has a couple of weeks to get himself right, lets just hope it isnt serious?
pompeyrug
oddly with defoes second goal (i'm pretty sure it was his now), it wouldn't have been awarded if crouch hadnt headed it in becuase the ref/assistent ref didnt se to think it had gone in!
pompeycarpet
apparently we beat sunderland in a closed doors friendly on thursday, and hreidarrson scored the winner.
jbaker
Now, when in Porto........ anyone want to finish that sentence?
UKTony
This result will be a big boost to the whole squad
UKTony
a few more beers and vodka's and i reckon i will be thinking im in rome :-)
pompeyrug
What's going on at Hull?
UKTony
Hello fellas... 3-0 up did anybody predict that !
Chix
afternoon chixy, i said 3-0 defoe, johnson and crouchy with jamo saving a penalty - game over i win...
pompeyrug
Afternoon Chix
UKTony
I predicted Pompey to score 3!
paultsmouth
Good day typing tomorrow's Toast (now sent) and listening the start of our season. Headline writers 'Defoe brings sticky end to Toffees'!!
eastneydave
I predicted we'd lose and couldn't be happier. Perhaps I'll do that every week :-)
UKTony
Toffees find it hard to swallow
UKTony
So "game over I win" was a lie then :)
UKTony
so crouchy hasnt scored yet then...
pompeyrug
or Toffees chewed by Pompey.. Defoe get second goal and it's 100 up for JD !
Chix
I had him gettin 2 today and Kaboul the other
paultsmouth
only because crouchy lost his goal :-)
pompeyrug
good day all around really...apart from everton!
pompeyrug
It's also Harrys 50th victory in league and cup, since his return to Fratton Park.
Chix
60 seconds left, can we hold on?
paultsmouth
No consolation goal please
UKTony
well played davis, come in from the cold to do the job again - well done.
pompeyrug
yes we can...get in, play up pompey!
pompeyrug
Excellent result .... We are on our way.... We wanted 3pts from our first three games .. we got em !
Chix
Great result - well played everyone. Crouch debut goal at FP then. Can't wait
UKTony
happy bunny
paultsmouth
Let all have a disco, Let all have a disco la la la la la la la la.
eastneydave
and pavlyuchenko has gone to spuds. not that we care.
jbaker
Two weeks to next game now though!!
eastneydave
just means we can have a longer disco dave :-)
pompeycarpet
and now purely to get this to 200 posts... I think we won :-)
pompeycarpet
Well done my heart, a Pompey win prediction.
storagematt
another good 'match day live' experience mehinks here! hopefully more will turn up for our next game on the road - citeh on sunday 21st sept i think?
pompeyrug
I'll try and be here Rug, been out golfing a lot lately when Pompey are away tho.
pompey4me
