Uefa cup - Pompey face Vitoria SC

The uefa cup 1st round draw has been made and Pompey's first ever opponents in European competition will be Portuguese side Vitoria SC.

The 1st leg - on Thursday 18th September - will take place at Fratton with the return leg a couple of weeks later on Thursday 2nd October in Portugal.

For those of you that will be making the trip to Portugal I suggest that you dust off your passport, if you have not already, and await further instruction for those all important ticket details!

The European tour begins in a little under 3 weeks time - bring it on...

Portugal in September. How very civilised!
NinjaTim
October actually. Where the fck is it anyway. Having only been to Lisbon, very nice too, where actually are we/
storagematt
Wrong way round for me so I will prob have to wait and hope that we get into the group stages.

Just found link on Wikepedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vit%C3%B3ria_S.C.

I think you have got the Spanish one there Storage. Try the one I found. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vit%C3%B3ria_S.C.
blarmy
well we will win because we are PORTSMOUTH FC !!!!!!!!!!!!
stfc ballboy
Your right, just realised. trust me. first time in Europe & I'm in the wrong country. LOL
storagematt
Looking a bit deeper into the information the ground is 40km north of Porto. The nearset airport to Porto is Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport. Flights via TAP Air go out of Gatwick
blarmy
Look at the wikipedia write up. This is a tough game.
storagematt
I think you are right, just because they are not as well known as Benfica, and Porto doesn't make them a push over. I am sure that we have the quality to give them a beating at home and then only go and need a draw at ther place
blarmy
It's good to have any easy opponent first up, that is if we want to go far in this elongated competition. I am divided in how far I really want us to go. If it costs many places in the Prem. or even causes us to fight another relegation battle then I won't give a damn, but on the other hand we really did want to make Europe didn't we ?
pompeygray
Matt, We'd never make tour operators; I was in the wrong month, you were in the wrong country!
NinjaTim
Pedro Mendes's old club. So says wikipedia anyway. If only he were here!
poot_evans
They can't be that bad a side as they made the Champions League!
sneakay
This is sooo exciting, and Portugal - fab! I started looking up flights etc, but soon realised that almost everyone and their dog want to go, and there may only be as little as 1,500 tickets. Even if there's 6,000 tickets (which is unlikely), there won't be enough for all the season ticket holders. So I'm beginning to wonder if they'll have big screens on Southsea Common for this as well.

Apparently Vitoria are a really good side, they finished 3rd in the Portuguese league, only behind Porto and Benfica. They were in the Champions League, and its only because they lost that they're in the UEFA. So Storagematt is right, it is a tough game. They also have a reasonably small stadium, and a very keen and noisy fanbase, with strong local rivalries, and pride themselves on being the best fans in Portugal. Do they remind you of anyone? I would love to go, theres a chance this could be our only match in Europe. (And I expect they're looking us up, and saying, hey, its easy, they're bottom of the league).
tracyc
well i'm definitely going to Fratton so give me a call Rug if you want a lift.. Pompey in Europe. Funny i was clearing out a cupboard and found some old programmes form the 70's the Chelsea programme from Sept 23 1975 almost 33 years to the day before this game was one of them-the team was Grahamme lloyd,Phil Roberts.Norman Piper. Rich Reynolds.Paul Went. Eoin Hand. Peter Marinello.Allan kane George Graham.ian Collard and Micky Mellows. unbelievable in comparison
plymouth graham
Good stuff Graham and good to hear from you. Ian Collard ah memories he was the first player Pompey ever had on loan. Been out all day with Grandson and wife so received a text message - 'playing team from Portugal I have never heard of'. Well I have and Toast will look at them in detail between now and the games. WE will even help you with your Portuguese!!
eastneydave
'Ob-re-ga-do' to a man & 'Ob-re-ga-da' to a woman. Means 'Thank you'. That is about all I can remember. Important words though.
storagematt
Also this lot lost in the final champions league qualifier to Basle of Switzerland. They drew 0-0 at home & then lost 2-1 away. Now on paper you would have thought they would would have beaten the swiss side!!!!

just come back from 2 week hol in portugal. i learnt two other words than obregado/a storage .... thats desculpe (sorry) and forra (fu*k) lol. im not sure its enough to construct a meaningful sentence.
pompey--pessimist
The word on the streets is that some have already booked their flights!!
eastneydave
PP. I've never had to apologise afterwards but hey if you do!! LOL.
storagematt
plymouth graham, good to hear mate - delighted to hear it in fact, i will have a word with the bro and his otherhalf to see if they are up for it as well, tickets available of course...
i couldnt get the time off for the 1st leg, but have arranged a shift swap, so im there and im working on something to go to portugal too, as i do have that week off!
i will drop you a line graham, and we will sort something out.
pompeyrug
word on the street is i know some people have already booked flights... its not far from porto is it, nice 30,000 seater stadium i believe, sounds good!
pompeyrug
I hope people who've booked flights know it could be on the Weds night. Apparently Bolton played them in the UEFA a couple of years ago and got 5,000 tickets, so I'm keeping everything crossed I'll be able to get some.
tracyc
pompey say both legs are either the wed or thurs but as there is champions league football on on the tues and wed of each of the uefa cup weeks in keeping with european football in recent years the uefa cup will be relegated to a thurs night...
season ticket holders will get first crack wont they - will around 1/3 take up the option? if so then that will be our lot wont it...
pompeyrug
What do we reckon guys; Official Pompey Tour Operators (Thomson - yuk) or VP DIY Special?
UKTony
That assumes you can do your own thing on flights etc. and still get tickets. Anyone know any different?
UKTony
Blarmey; are you sure that's the right link? Matt's in the wrong country, Tim's got the wrong month and I thought we were playing Vitoria Setubal. Dohh! Confused.com
