Traore on his Pompey move

Pompey have completed the signing of Arsenal left back Armand Traore on a season loan deal.

The 18-year old has told the Pompey Site that he is excited by this move as it gives him the chance to work with some former teammates and work under Harry Redknapp: 'I know a lot of players in the team - I trained with Sol and Lauren at Arsenal and I know Younes Kaboul and Lassana Diarra.

'I spoke to Younes, he said that it's a very good club and that I would do well here.

'Harry Redknapp is a good manager and the fact that he told me he had confidence in me; that was a big reason for me to come here.

'And Portsmouth are a very good team. They are in the UEFA Cup and that's great for the club.'

He has also set his sights on finishing high in the league and winning a trophy as well: 'I want us to be up in the top half of the table and to win at least a trophy.

'It would be great to defend the FA Cup - I think that it's a great competition.'

Peter Storrie has said that we have beaten several other clubs to bring him in.

It is a really good move as he looks a fantastic footballer. With Redknapp prepared to bring him in, and hopefully use him this might also suggest that he is prepared to use some of the younger players that we have coming through also, so long as they are good enough...

Sounds promising. At 18 yo, how much 1st team experience will he actually get, I wonder.

I was really happy until you mentioned his age, Tony.

18 or 38, should it really matter? i wouldnt have thought we would have signed him if he wasnt going to play a part at left back or left midfield... he has played 18 games for arsenal so far i believe, granted most will have been in the league cup but its still 1st team football with arsenal, who dont have any mugs playing for them do they!

great young signing for me....

He can only help us! He began last season by scoring a spectacular 40-yarder against Fulham in the Reserves.. an according to the Sun, he's a bit of a nutter.. YOUNG Arsenal star was arrested on suspicion of carrying a lethal knuckle-duster at the Spurs match on Saturday. French international Armand Traore, 17, was allegedly caught with the weapon outside a turnstile at White Hart Lane. All class ;)

This kid looked good at LB in the Carling Cup run to the final in 2006-07. Last year he looked like he had to work a lot harder on defence. But when he played in LW for the reserves, he's very good indeed. Useful young player for you guys. Hope he can get some games. And good luck Pompey!

I think we will be a hit for us, and whether he plays left back as we would expect or left wing it is good to know that we now have some extra cover and someone to worry Herman about his first team place.
sneakay
Don't remember seeing him play, but unlikely that Arry would bring him in if he wasn't capable of giving Hermann a run for his money.
Tantona
Rarely are the Arsenal kids anything but very good.

I think we should just go for it on Saturday against ManYoo. Little unsure of the midfield so far but think i'd line up something like this. James (GK), Hreidarrson (LB), Distin (CB), Kaboul (CB), Johnson (RB), Traore (LW), Krankjar (CM), Diarra (CM), Little (RW), Crouch (F), Defoe (F) alternatively James (GK), Traore (LB), Distin (CB), Kaboul (CB), Johnson (RB), Krankjar (LW), Diop (CM) Diarra (CM), Little (RW), Crouch (F), Defoe (F) Campbell should be out I'm really not sure about him anymore. I think we need to give Kaboul a chance to bed in even if it is against MU. I'd rather he was bedded in and we got all the 'bread and butter' points against the lower teams and sacrificed 3 against MU.
stooH
stooh thats a good team but i reckon a 433 : james , johnson , kaboul , distin , traore , diop , diarra , kranjcar , sahar / kanu , crouch , defoe this would definately work as up front we will have pace on both flanks and height in the middle with crouch !!
stfc ballboy
liking that as well but think it might leave us a little to exposed against mu. I don't think Kanu and Crouch will work well in the same team too similar but in different ways (if that makes sense).
stooH
Hehe Traore can run and cross well for Crouch! ;)
Lou the Gunneress
Terrific signing for us by all accounts.
NinjaTim
sign him PERMANT in summer !!!!!!
stfc ballboy
Ballboy; if he does well with us I can't see Arsenal letting him go. I guess the idea of the loan from Arsenal's perspective is to give him more experience. Arsenal are very good at nurturing their prospects and may want, in the long term, to hold on to him. From what I understand, they really do rate him.
NinjaTim
He also signed a new "long term" contract with Arsenal just a couple of weeks ago.
NinjaTim
Good signing very quick young player, should be an interesting signing should slot into left back and put Hermann on the bench
NK19
We will soon have a French speaking dressing room at this rate. Doubt he will start for a while but c'est la vie!
eastneydave
Just a fix for this season, witch is a shame, but could feature monday as Nico is out with a knock on his ankle from midweek.
pompeyyong
Sadly with money short we have to 'fix for the season' but even though this is quite a coup.
