Pompey pair start as England flop!

Pompey pair start as England flop!

David James and Jermain Defoe started for England against the Czech Republic last night - neither really impressed, but in fairness who did for England though!

After making a good save early on James looked shaky as he won his 40th cap and had one major rush of blood to the head that should have seen England punished with a goal really - it is moments like that which will not help his claims to retain the no.1 jersey...

Defoe, who was starting his 3rd successive game for England, was taken off at half time after making little impression alongside Wayne Rooney - but did have a couple of half chances - as Emile Heskey came on.

The luckiest of the Pompey trio on duty was Glen Johnson as he escaped by staying on the bench for the night! Wes Brown was handed the right back berth and marked this with a goal, which equalised former Pompey striker Milan Baros earlier effort. The Czech's went ahead again and only an injury time goal from Joe Cole earned us a 2-2 draw.

Even before this game we all knew how pointless it was having an international friendly so early in the season - little will have been learned from this experience to take forward into the World Cup qualifiers, which start in 3 weeks...

Amazing that Baros scored after his goal shy games with us. Jamo can ruin months of great work in a split second of madness!!!

Did anyone hear Harry's comment about Baros after the game? Classic!!

Last night was another example of why I think Jamo should be tied to each goal post with a bungee cord! Don't let him out of the area.

That is probably the one and only problem with Jamo, his coming out for no hope balls, it ultimately cost us the goal that Annelka scored and could cost him his England place. Mind you infairness still don't think any of the other crop of England keepers deserve to take the position at the moment. Is a bit worrying though twice in two games and in fact thinking about the Commy Shield he was out on a limb at one point.

boys, I know its not related, but just read on the official pompey website that Thomas has now signed a perminent deal, therfore, no longer a loan....is the rule you cant have more than two loans regardless of what team their from, or from the same team...both even??....so does this mean we could now get SWP???

Poor old Jamo getting the blame for a farcical defensive display in front of him - two games running. he was only trying to take control as neither JT or Rio appeared to want to.

We could have got Baros for £3m and what a quality finish that goal was. If he had scored a goal early in his loan spell I reckon the flood gates would have opened and there would be no need to have spent all that money and wages on Crouch who I have a feeling will struggle in pompeys system. Crouch needs loads of good crosses but pompey dont have the players to provide them unless a big signing is made.

Jamo does have these moments of madness, doesn't he! I don't mind now when he does it playing for Pompey, because his position there is safe, and we know and love him so well, and know how good he is otherwise. But when he does it for England he worries me. He's worked so hard on all aspects of his game, and worked with his sports psychologist on things, plus he's got a great coach in Dave Coles - surely he can sort this out??? I think its the only thing stopping him being the best keeper in the world right now. I don't think last night will be enough to lose him his England place, but he must keep up the form he's had over the last 2 years, if it starts to slip everyone will notice.

2-2 seems a fair result

Done Deal - Smith in permanently from Swindon

The interest Pompey retained in Smith, with him 'in our sights' has resulted in him returning to the Blues on a permanent basis after signing for an 'undisclosed fee' from Swindon.

Cushioning the blow

Much, that needed saying, about Webster's exit for Ipswich and the arrival of Clarke in return (and cash) has been said hasn't it? Doyle's been spot on with what he said.

Swindon striker in 'Pompey's sights'

Michel Smith, who was of course on loan last season, could return? He's still in 'Pompey's sights' by all accounts after Swindon informed him he's 'surplus to requirements' now.
