Rangers pay 3m for Mendes

Pedro Mendes has completed his move to Rangers, who have signed 'the legend' for £3m on a 3-year contract.

I am gutted by this, much like most others will be, but as said before in other articles what can you do? I will not really go over what I have said before as these thoughts can be found in other articles written today I will just leave it at 'I am gutted'...

This is what Peter Storrie and Harry Redknapp had to say on the Pompey Site about his departure.

Storrie: 'we're sorry to see good players go, particularly one like Pedro.

'He's not one we wanted to move on, but as a club we understand that we have to balance the books and that Pedro wants to be playing regularly.

'Glasgow Rangers are a big club and that was an attraction to Pedro.

'He's a quality player and has been a great servant to the club. It was his goal that started the run that kept us in the Premier League in 2006.'

Redknapp: 'I'll miss Pedro. He was a great player for me and a great person.

'He was probably more responsible than anyone else for keeping us up two seasons ago.'

Without you Pedro we would not be where we are now, god only knows where we would be lurking now!

I am just glad that I personally got a chance to say a kind of goodbye to him this summer. My sister-in-law got to have a photo with him after the Exeter game, and I got to shake his hand and exchange a few words...

I for one will be eternally grateful to you for what you did for this club, it is just a shame that we could not keep you and saw fit to reject offers for Papa Bouba Diop but accepted them for you!

We are selling players for silly amounts of money which we cannot replace. Mendes, Benji, Taylor....... I do not see this as building for the future.

Pedro was one of the few Pompey players who had a real affinity with the fans - Herman, Linvoy, Jamo, Distin are the only ones who I would put in the same category. Davis is one of the guilty men - he has undoubted ability but failed to kick on after a great start to last season. Turns down Celtic was the most short sighted move - Harry will leave him kicking his heels but he had to get cash in. People forget where this club has come from - its only 10 years since we were at the bottom of the Championship and fans on the pitch chanting 'Gregory Out'!!

Said to the wife after the Community shield when Pedro appladed and then waved to us fans that he was going. I'm gutted. Think I'm gonna have to join the doomand gloomers soon, just can tsee any depth or balance to the squad. We all said it would be Diarra with Pedro in the midfield, well it's now Diarra and Diop. that's a step back, that is!

Davis was valued at 3 million by Celtic. Mendes goes for 3 million to Rangers- so they got a bargain unless you think Davis is as good as Mendes. How much will Harry go for? His body language was one of a manager who has had enough.

16/08/2008 03:50:00

We do have to bear in mind that Mendes said he wanted regular football & wanted to go to Rangers, my evaluation is that 3 mill is a bit low, I would say 4 mill. We all love what mendes has done, but to be fair, he didnt reature much last season, it what was proberbley our most succesfull midfield ever!....u never want to sell good players, but because the shape of the team has changed we need more wide players, so Mendes is a casualty!. I wish him all the best & thank him!!!

hope he's got Appiah up his sleeve, Gleams, Harry's begun using the present tense again in his interviews - 'need' not 'needed'. He also said, "We are short of three players. That is what we need to be a squad who can compete on the domestic front and try to have a run in Europe." I would have had both our sold midfielders in the opening day line-up. Bah!

. . . . . having said that, playing two 'proper' wingers and two 'proper' forwards is an exciting prospect and an option now.

dont forget FA that HR is a man that is very ill with a virus at the moment, so i would not read too much into body language at the moment...

I must admit, I'm getting a bit concerned about the number of centre mid's left in the squad....who have we got in the way of backup now? I'm confident that Davis and Hughesy could step in and do a good job when required (if fit), but it's not leaving much room for injuries....

16/08/2008 10:00:00

Which is why I think HR must have a Plan Z: maybe Lopez as a filler and Stephen Appiah. As the report about SA was in the Telegraph I think iy's got more credibility than, for example, the Sun. "With one Ghanian midfielder leaving the club in the shape of Sulley Muntari, Redknapp appears keen to replace him with another in Stephen Appiah. The Ghana captain currently plays for Fenerbache in Turkey with Tottenham and West Ham also reportedly interested." I'd settle for that.

Have i missed something Et_Tu we have little and Thomas both signed from championship sides, i hope they prove me wrong but I see them as budget signings not proper wingers. With Muntari gone Mendes was going to be vital to our midfield this season, it pains me to say it but Crouch apart we are weaker than we were last season. What a great way to start the biggest season of our lives.
