Rangers pay 3m for Mendes

Pedro Mendes has completed his move to Rangers, who have signed 'the legend' for 3m on a 3-year contract.

I am gutted by this, much like most others will be, but as said before in other articles what can you do? I will not really go over what I have said before as these thoughts can be found in other articles written today I will just leave it at 'I am gutted'...

This is what Peter Storrie and Harry Redknapp had to say on the Pompey Site about his departure.

Storrie: 'we're sorry to see good players go, particularly one like Pedro.

'He's not one we wanted to move on, but as a club we understand that we have to balance the books and that Pedro wants to be playing regularly.

'Glasgow Rangers are a big club and that was an attraction to Pedro.

'He's a quality player and has been a great servant to the club. It was his goal that started the run that kept us in the Premier League in 2006.'

Redknapp: 'I'll miss Pedro. He was a great player for me and a great person.

'He was probably more responsible than anyone else for keeping us up two seasons ago.'

Without you Pedro we would not be where we are now, god only knows where we would be lurking now!

I am just glad that I personally got a chance to say a kind of goodbye to him this summer. My sister-in-law got to have a photo with him after the Exeter game, and I got to shake his hand and exchange a few words...

I for one will be eternally grateful to you for what you did for this club, it is just a shame that we could not keep you and saw fit to reject offers for Papa Bouba Diop but accepted them for you!

Fairwell Pedro, thanks for keeping us up in 2006 and good luck in your career. You will be missed!
sneakay
So he will be a good buy for us then??
fivestar
I just don't see what's going on here?? call me thickety thick from Thickton, but I just don't see the logic in this. Thank you Pedro for all the joy you have given us all, forever in Pompey folklore!!!!!!!!!!!
pentonpompey
Damn. Yes, FiveStar, I do think he'll be a good buy for you.
PhilTaglia
Who in their right mind would reject bids for diop but accept them for pedro!
pompeysno.9
Can I change my prediction for the Chelski game Sunday? :-(
pentonpompey
His name will ever be written in stone in Pompey legend, thanks Pedro, good luck in Scotland (although you'll only really need it in the 20 Glasgow derby's every season)!
Tantona
Good luck Pedro..without your goals & energy Pompey woudn't be where they are now...just really glad he played in the Cup Final & got the medal he deserved
yellowcheesemonkey
This is the news I see when I get up in the morning. Hope the rest of the day doesn't go as much like S***. I'm gutted and will probably "trod along" all day long now.
pompeywa

stfc ballboy
Long live Prince Pedro!! Hazzar, lol
Gleams
Rangers must be pinching themselves -
ChrisW
Pompey legend. We had seen the best of him and with our current finances it isn't a bad move.
stillthewhizz
We are selling players for silly amounts of money which we cannot replace. Mendes, Benji, Taylor....... I do not see this as building for the future.
007
Good bye Pedro and thanks. You are forever in our minds and will be welcome back at any time
UKTony
What a sad day for the club, so much for strength in depth, why cant we dump headlesss davis to hull and some of the others, oh yea i know why.... cos no one wants them
russellm
bug ger i had just put a tenner on us to get a point
russellm
well that blow my theory of Diarria & Mendes controling our midfield this season like they did so well on Sunday at wembley Good luck pedro thanks for some great goals but most of all dont forget to SHOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sea-juicer
shame to see u go Pedro but even worse that we only got a ***** poor 3 million why does every team seem to be able to buy our good players for peanuts remember gary oneil, matty taylor, and now pedro lets just hope davies isnt next for 2.5 mil or something
ronnie redknapp
davis has to stay now surely.
Gleams
Can't see any more midfielders upping sticks, to be fair, everyone is doom and gloom about Pedro, but that is more about what he done before, he hardly figured last year, that said I will miss him
paultsmouth
SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT :-)
pentonpompey
here's how our team could look in march after being ravaged by injuries suspensions etc- ashdown Lauren Paramot Traore Cranie Mveumba Diop Hughes Thomas Nugent Kanu Not exactly encouraging is it.
pompeysno.9
glad he's gone - had visions of him planting a long range shot in our net on Sunday!
merlin
Good luck Pedro many thanks for the good times, you will always be in the memories of Portsmouth fans
pompeyyong
You have all said it. Thanks, Legend, Gutted, Prince, Saviour, Five star and so on!! Thanks and good luck!! Shooooooooooooot!
eastneydave
he will do well for rangers, alongside barry!! goodluck. however he wont be playing in europe this season, unlike us. : )

Pedro was one of the few Pompey players who had a real affinity with the fans - Herman, Linvoy, Jamo, Distin are the only ones who I would put in the same category. Davis is one of the guilty men - he has undoubted ability but failed to kick on after a great start to last season. Turns down Celtic was the most short sighted move - Harry will leave him kicking his heels but he had to get cash in. People forget where this club has come from - its only 10 years since we were at the bottom of the Championship and fans on the pitch chanting 'Gregory Out'!!

Said to the wife after the Community shield when Pedro appladed and then waved to us fans that he was going. I'm gutted. Think I'm gonna have to join the doomand gloomers soon, just can tsee any depth or balance to the squad. We all said it would be Diarra with Pedro in the midfield, well it's now Diarra and Diop. that's a step back, that is!
pompey4me
i also had that feeling mate, it was the same sort of feeling as the fulham game - i was convinced that would be his last match by his reaction...
pompeyrug
Why would you sell Pedro for 3m, we must need money, thats all I can say. There can't be any other reason. I got a feeling there is something in the pipeline - there must be!
Gandor
I cant see harry sticking with diop surely. He must have something up his sleeve. come on harry!
Gleams
By the way, thanks Pedro, who knows where we would be if you didnt start the ball rolling in the great escape by knocking in those 2 belters against Jamo 'n' Man City....SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!
pompey4me
Davis was valued at 3 million by Celtic. Mendes goes for 3 million to Rangers- so they got a bargain unless you think Davis is as good as Mendes. How much will Harry go for? His body language was one of a manager who has had enough.
frattonaussie
We do have to bear in mind that Mendes said he wanted regular football & wanted to go to Rangers, my evaluation is that 3 mill is a bit low, I would say 4 mill. We all love what mendes has done, but to be fair, he didnt reature much last season, it what was proberbley our most succesfull midfield ever!....u never want to sell good players, but because the shape of the team has changed we need more wide players, so Mendes is a casualty!. I wish him all the best & thank him!!!
CharlieChimes
hope he's got Appiah up his sleeve, Gleams, Harry's begun using the present tense again in his interviews - 'need' not 'needed'. He also said, "We are short of three players. That is what we need to be a squad who can compete on the domestic front and try to have a run in Europe." I would have had both our sold midfielders in the opening day line-up. Bah!
Et_tu_Pompeii
. . . . . having said that, playing two 'proper' wingers and two 'proper' forwards is an exciting prospect and an option now.
Et_tu_Pompeii
Best of luck Pedro, we will miss you. Such a shame to see him go, especially when he was just getting his flair back, but he wanted to go to Rangers. I hope he stops getting overlooked by Portugal now.
tracyc
dont forget FA that HR is a man that is very ill with a virus at the moment, so i would not read too much into body language at the moment...
pompeyrug
I must admit, I'm getting a bit concerned about the number of centre mid's left in the squad....who have we got in the way of backup now? I'm confident that Davis and Hughesy could step in and do a good job when required (if fit), but it's not leaving much room for injuries....
Tantona
Which is why I think HR must have a Plan Z: maybe Lopez as a filler and Stephen Appiah. As the report about SA was in the Telegraph I think iy's got more credibility than, for example, the Sun. "With one Ghanian midfielder leaving the club in the shape of Sulley Muntari, Redknapp appears keen to replace him with another in Stephen Appiah. The Ghana captain currently plays for Fenerbache in Turkey with Tottenham and West Ham also reportedly interested." I'd settle for that.
Et_tu_Pompeii
Yes, thank you Pedro. You will never be forgotton by those of us who witnessed the great Pompey moments you gave us. Now go & stuff the boggies & help Rangers win the league.
storagematt
Have i missed something Et_Tu we have little and Thomas both signed from championship sides, i hope they prove me wrong but I see them as budget signings not proper wingers. With Muntari gone Mendes was going to be vital to our midfield this season, it pains me to say it but Crouch apart we are weaker than we were last season. What a great way to start the biggest season of our lives.
