Pedro on his way out/Thomas on his way in?

Despite previous 'claims' that Rangers could not afford his wages and Pompey saying that he would not be sold 'reports' today are claiming that Pedro Mendes is on the verge of joining the Scottish club...

Letting him leave in my thinking would be bad enough, as it is my view that the departure of Sulley Muntari was not actually that bad a thing as it allowed Mendes back into the side, which then allowed Lassana Diarra off the leash... Letting him leave for a p**s poor amount of £2.5m or 'as much' as £3m is a disgrace!

The fact that we need to offload players seems as though we will have to sacrifice him as others are unwilling to leave. If they want to stay for the fight, fair enough if they want to stay for the cushy wages shame on them - but then again we gave them the wages, so it is our fault!

I retain hope that these 'reports' are false, and maybe I am clutching at straws, but they might be an attempt by Rangers to get Fulham to lower their asking price for another target Steven Davis? But I think this is probably my heart talking and not my head...

Coming the other way will be Jerome Thomas, as the Charlton winger is set to sign on loan after years of links to him.

I am sure that the signing of Thomas will be met with plenty of 'moans and groans' and talks of 'a Championship reject' but look at the bigger picture here guys, the fella is a left winger - we are desperate for a left sided player to act as cover for Niko Kranjcar/challenge him. In this 25-year-old we will have this!

To be honest I am not keen on the guy on a personal level as his temperament and off the field antics seem to be suspect, but he has had potential for many years but a lack of application has failed to see this materialise - how often do we bring players like that in and turn their careers round though! So bare this in mind here...

Lets give the fella a chance; he adds another option to the left - which as said we needed so, so badly! - and if he hits the ground running he will offer us something. Not the name people might have wanted, but adding a left sided player was a must!

Ok, I might be looking for a positive spin on things here but maybe, just maybe if Mendes does go and Thomas proves a success we might yet see Kranjcar move into a more central role, a free role behind the strikers - which is without doubt his best position.

Thoughts on all the above please guys...

Well Storrie has already said the doors are now shut, yet Thomas has arrived on loan? If Pedro leave we will be short of decent centre mids so I hope he has a plan.

My dad spoke to Pedro yesterday and he said that he was catching a flight to Portugal today which I didn't think was good if we were keeping him?

I don't know enough about Thomas to comment. As for Mendes you'd hope this is part of a plan... But Kranky in central midfield? - I don't see it. He's not fit enough or fast enough to compete in that position in the Prem.

If mendes does go he will be misses, i personally saw him in the middle with Diarra as our best pairing for this season. Lets hope Harry has got one up his sleeve and Storrie's talk was BS...

Having featured in our last 2 wembley appearences, I thought PM (oo PM) was once again on the verge of regular 1st team football. I feel very down that he is off :(

Bad business here, Mendes would be perfect for european games but instead we sell him and buy some lad who struggles to get into charltons team. I guess Lopez will be signed now to repalce pedro.

a quote from eurosports "Jordan also revealed Pompey boss Harry Redknapp "didn't want to sell" Mendes, and described his exit as "a bit of a blow"." a bit of a blow sorry but i think unless Arrys got something pretty major up his sleeve this is a lot more than a bit of a blow, my heart sunk when i heard this news were screwed if we don't have a strong midfield and i don't think diop with diarra cuts it for me they just don't really work that well together and i don't like diop fullstop.

I feel as tho we are mugging away the family silver for a loaf of bread and a pint of milk. I hope some of those who have refused to leave are satisfied - mind you, what do they care?

Gandor, if I had signed a contract and was offered a lesser paying job elsewhere, I'd stick where I was. I don't think there's much else to it than that.

When I say lesser paying, I mean lesser job - pay, conditions, prospects, league position. It takes a lot for a player to move on if it doesn't suit them. Look at Traore. He publicly slated HR's managament style in France when he was on loan, yet he's back and drawing his salary. Not sure Harry helps the situation either - he's openly callous when it comes to players who are excess to requirements - you're either in you're out... so I can imagine a few wanting their pound of flesh when it suits them.

I don't know if it will happen but we are still "linked" with a free swoop for Appiah and Belhadj has apparently "agreed" a four year deal and now we have to sort out the fee.

squad better off or worse if appiah and Belhadji come in ?
15/08/2008 18:27:00

If I remember right we were after Appiah before we signed Muntari, so if we can get him would help fill the gap left by sulley & Pedro & yes southport Belhadj keeps popping up 3 mill too.

Better if the two come in. We have a large number of good players in the center of the park and Appiah is much more disciplined than Muntari (hence the reason he is Ghana's captain). Belhadj is a very talented left back that is also good on the attack and could hopefully mirror Glen's creativeness on the opposite side of the park.

I'll simply say we will finish in the bottom half of the league this season as I think that sums up my feelings on what has gone on this off season period.
