Talking Pompey with PFCMatt

Talking Pompey with PFCMatt

Vital Pompey has previously brought you the 'knowing me knowing you series' - which is still running, so others will be added and if you want to do one just email - now we have a little something extra this summer...

PFCMatt was asked 5 quick questions, this is what they said.

  • What are you expecting from Pompey in the coming season?
In my heart I would like to see us finish in the top 6, hang on to the cup and also make progress in Europe. However, I would in no way be disappointed if we had another season like 2007/2008.

  • Uefa cup - are you a fan of us being in this, or are you against it? Either way how well do you reckon we can do?
Yes I am a fan of us being in the Uefa Cup, personally I'd never thought I'd see the day and I can't wait to possibly go and see Pompey in Europe. There are some huge clubs in the draw, I bet none of them will have prepared for a potential European tie at Fratton Park! There's every chance we could progress with a bit of good fortune along the way. However, I hope the fans don't start moaning if the league form suffers a bit. Historically when you start playing Thursday and then Sunday - like Spurs, Bolton last season - the league form can take a dip. If we got to the last 4 of the Uefa Cup and only finished 10th in the League then I wouldn't be too disappointed.

  • Which 3 players - that we could realistically sign - would you like to see arrive this summer?
We got Crouch, so that's one. I'd still like to see us bring in Shaun Wright-Phillips, not because i think he's outstanding, I think he'd fit in well down here and Harry would bring out the best in him. I still feel we need someone with genuine pace on the wing. Don't think it'll happen though it looks like he'll tough it out at Chelsea. That bloke Menez from Monaco looked great from what i saw of him on YouTube, but I think I'd go for someone like Tim Cahill a great box to box midfielder who scores a lot of goals, injured at the moment though and no way Everton would let him go.

  • If you had to select 1 player to get shot of - or maybe to rephrase or make this decision easier, 'sacrifice' - to make a signing who would it be and why?
Diop would be the obvious one, but there's always been a player in the team that for some reason you don't rate, blame for everything when things go t**s up and have a go at - for me in the past it was Quashie and Kevin Harper! If we could get our £8m or whatever it was back it'd have to be Utaka. He was very frustrating last season and I hate seeing players with genuine ability not using it. He's said that he'd do better this season, talk is cheap though, shut your gob John and get on with it.

  • How many Pompey games do you expect to make this season? All the home games, perhaps one or two away games and hopefully I'll be dusting down me passport and heading to Europe.

Thanks to PFCMatt for answering these.

    PLAY UP POMPEY!

i have to agree with crapet there, utaka will prve himself this season. only thing is he might be played even more out of position than he was lasy season, at least he was part of the three pronged attack. this season it seems like he will be right mid, meaning he has to come back too! when he gest his chance up front, he looks good. like games against derby, bolton and reading showed last season.

when he played as part of a 3 pronged attack at the start of last season, he was untouchable. I am sure he will be able to do the same again.

Utaka has competition from Little this season this might be what he needs, but as jbaker said by getting Crouch Harry will use 4-4-2 a lot more this season which will give him more defensive responsibilities, so he will have to up his work rate, I say good luck John hope you can prove a lot of people wrong.
