If we miss 'em Pompey will still be ok!

As I have said more than once recently the 'silly season' really is frustrating me, so the sooner we can just get back to playing football and not worrying about 'who might sign', 'who is rumoured to be signing', 'who will not be signing' along with those that might going the other way as well etc. the better...

Harry Redknapp might have today said that as we do not have the money we will miss out on Nicky Shorey - who he says will go to Villa, also saying that at the moment Villa are also ahead of us in the race to sign Younes Kaboul - who I still think we will sign - as well, but what he says is not always true, but even if it is it will not be the end of the world... However he also said that Sasha Gaydamak cannot be blamed for the lack of funds, as he does continue to plough money into the club and cannot keep doing this without some return, so others need to go before further reinforcements 'might' arrive - but until he shifts them he cannot do anything.

I maintain my thoughts that I think we are a better team than we were a year ago, maybe the defence might be getting older and slower but as much as I would like to see further arrivals if we do not see anyone else then I will be content with our lot and still believe that our current squad is good enough to more than hold its own in the top 10 again, and is good enough - if we get it right - to finish in the top 6, despite Redknapp often claiming otherwise! We all know what he is like but I often stop paying attention to his negative comments and downplaying of things, I think the fella is a genius but needs to learn when to button it as we - and the players in his squad - do not really need to hear some of the things he comes out with, even if they are taken with a pinch of salt...

People might argue that technically we have not spent any money this season as despite signing Peter Crouch we have sold Sulley Muntari so we have broken even, but we also have to take into account that we have a wage bill that runs into millions of pounds a month, a youth side - that will bare fruit! - is being bankrolled with players added to this all the time and our new training complex must be paid for as well, and that will set us back plenty of millions!

Recently I have said that I do not think that Peter Storrie promising earlier in the summer that we would sign '3 top class' players helped, and whilst I think that the guy sometimes gets an unfair amount of stick this did nothing to quell the expectation levels and left many, myself included maybe 'expecting' £20m spent again this summer... Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I wonder if he sometimes thinks 'I wish I could go back and rephrase what I said, or not have said it at all.' That said Crouch fits the bill and although he is only a loan signing Ben Sahar is not looking too sluggish is he so you could argue that is 2... I believe that Glen Little is a good signing, but not in the bracket mentioned.

There is plenty of money in football these days but the credit crisis is also hitting football - or at least will - so what would you rather, all our eggs put in one basket and maybe see the bottom fall through and good only knows where we would end up, or play things as we are to maintain standards and remain on a safe footing - I know what I would prefer having seen some of the real dark days in this clubs history!

Yep, I feel that our squad is as good as anyone else in this league - clearly outside of the top 4 but on our day we can match them as well. I think that people within the club should stop talking and coming out with this and that, just let things happen.

At the end of the day aside from Spurs - who always spend a lot of money, but has it done them a lot of good! - others that are talking the talk, such as Villa, Everton, Newcastle, Citeh and so on are not really spending large amounts of cash are they and are not really getting that many targets that they want either. Maybe other clubs are such as Sunderland - who will probably have a good season - are, but they had to spend big money as they are trying to make up ground, and there was a fair amount of this between them and the next tier in the premier league.

I would love to see an arrival or two, but I do not feel that we should be downcast if this is not the case as we still have a squad packed with quality that I am more than happy with.

We are still improving as a club. We have plenty of young talent coming through that should start to make inroads into the 1st team shortly - some could even make small steps into it at stages this season as if they are good enough they are old enough. We are as good as the clubs that we will be challenging this season for these uefa cup places and so on, so lets focus on the positives and try to block out the negatives that are bandied about and look forward to the season ahead.

Yes we must aim high, and why not, but we also need to step back sometimes, not taking this 'we are little Pompey approach' - as that is wrong - but maybe take stock and think 'things really are not that bad are they'...

thing is we will be having more games this year than before if someone picked up a injury then we are stumped because we dont have much cover for example left back we only have hermann hreidersson , noe pamarot is naturally right footed so is lauren and martin craine so we have no one there then right midfield we only have utaka , mvuemba can play there but redknapp wont give him the chance . This year i reckon we should introduce some youngsters like arsenal do maybe then we have cover in all positions and some are good players like paris cowan hall and tom kibley !!!!!!!!!!!! so no money get the youngsters on

There's a good squad already assembled -maybe a couple of loan signings till January if necessary to cover in defence....arry always loves a deadline day signing ...perhaps the green light is about to be given on the ground & building is going to start earlier than expected ,so money's a bit tighter...love to see paris cowan hall given a run out as well

Rug, another good article and some key points. On th money side, yes we have broke even and I still think if you are to move on as a team you need to keep building and spending. i do have concerns about our back four and feel this is the area of the team that is likely to let us down this year. Lets hope Linvoy can last the season!

Keep Davis! Keep Mendez! Fix Diarra and we will be slightly better than last season whilst Villa and Everton slide back a little. Could be enough for 5th if Spurs can't pull it together

Maybe we underestimate what we have. We maybe better than we think. It's the injuries, suspensions, lots of games in a short space of time that worries me. I don't have huge expectations this season. Finishing in the top 10 will do me. Anything else will be a bonus & good cups runs depending on the draws.

A good article Rug, and I totally agree with you, with success comes greater expectations, but lets remind ourselves, we are a top ten club in the best league in the world, in Harry we have a manager of the highest order with a chairman who supports him, and slowly but surely they are building a quality squad, if we finish 7th next season it will be an improvement on last season, so come on lads we are no longer little Portsmouth, we can stand tall, we are Portsmouth FC on a European Tour. Lets face it, we played most of last year with just 10 players anyway (Utaka was somewhere else most of the time). So if we get a bit more out of what we have already, we will be fine. I wonder how Defoe, Diarra and Crouch are feeling? Presumably they were promised we would have more signings when they signed up? Someone at Pompey really needs to keep stuum in future, this sort of carry on can't be good for team morale. Never mind lads, we will just have to sing and shout louder this year. That won't cost anything. ... Wots those chants we were learning?

dont think we should pay more then 4.5Mil for shorey even if we did have it. prefer to be looking at young talent, attack minded would be great... Urby Emanuelson - for example??

we promised all our players that we would improve. I think there is plentty of room left to improve just with the current squad - however that isn't going to take us closer to the top 4.

maybe cos he was not consistent enough last season and we were offered 15Million!! I also think harry would have preferred to bring SWP in - that would have been the reason to offload muntari, not so we could buy shorey and kaboul at inflated prices

In retrospect, the Crouch purchase looks foolhardy. Defoe, Sahar, Nugent, Kanu and Utaka was more than enough striking options for any club looking to be in the top 5-10 slots. Crouch make perfect sense in the context of the "3 big signings and a bigger squad" nonsense that PS was feeding us, but with what we now know, I think it looks bloody daft. The question is whether PS and HR knew that no money was available when they bought Crouch or whether they got blindsided.

OK if we could only have one more signing there was a player we were linked with last week I would be very happy with, he plays center mid, but runs down both flanks, & puts in quality crosses with either foot, & to top that he scores goals too, & goes by the name of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov of Lokomotiv Moscow, any one agree?

No but moving back to reality...I am guessing that Redknapp is looking at one or two faces from abroad Bhasera and probably someone else thus far unknown to us. A couple of players to come in on the cheap. I mean hell the man resurrected di Canio's career he must have something up his sleeve (and I really hope we aren't going after Ljunberg).

If the the pot is empty then we are surely on in the market for freebies... which anit gonna delivered three or four top quality signings as we were promised.. I bet Niko goes before the end of the transfer window... Not a selling club...? Benjani and Muntari. gone but Defoe and Crouch in... not bad as improving the XI but we haven't improved the squad

well i hope you're both wrong as how would selling niko now benefit us? i know i have said that if 15m came in for him i would like us to take it but my worry would be we would improve the squad in terms of numbers, but could we improve it in terms of quality? we would need to spend most of this one 1 player for that...

I agree Rug, we have got a better squad and the addition of Crouch will get us more goals (which were lacking in fairness from our forwards last year) with him partnering Defoe. Shame we couldn't have held onto Matty Taylor really, but hey thats all history. We have got quality in the team, the only worrying thing is injuries or suspensions with the defence. Ideally we can get another left sided defender and we should be OK.

Lots of chat on how "HR" can resurrect footballers careers, how about Utaka, Nugent and Diop for starters. I believe they cost about 15 million.

Kranjcar must stay at all cost after the loss of Muntari even more so, as Rug said we have to keep what we got rather than sell are best players just to gamble on another 2/3 sqaud players.
