Talking Pompey with dave.jolley81

Vital Pompey has previously brought you the 'knowing me knowing you series' - which is still running, so others will be added and if you want to do one just email - now we have a little something extra this summer...

dave.jolley81 was asked 5 quick questions, this is what they said.

Ok, still quite new to Vital Pompey, only really got involved since the beginning of the year; however I thought I would have a go.

  • What are you expecting from Pompey in the coming season?
With regards to challenges on all fronts I think that even with the players we have brought in, I think that it will be a tough season. Last year was full of expectation, and if you look back 12 months and look at the players we got then - Muntari, Utaka, Distin, James, Johnson etc, I really, really was excited - the problem now with Crouch, Defoe, Diarra coming in the expectations are even higher, but I just don't feel it yet. Player for player I cannot honestly think of a better starting 11 outside the "big four", but I just keep worrying about the squad. How is Sol going to do this year, what happens if James or Diarra get injured (with the imminent departure, well maybe, of Muntari (written pre conformation of Muntari leaving), that really leaves our central mid looking weak with top, top quality), I don't know, maybe just being a pessimist, but feel, as HR put in his interview post our win last night in Nigeria, we need a few more real talents to be able to break our habits of pushing until January then fading away. I do expect us to challenge for 5th/6th, and to get to a quarter final in a domestic cup, and destroy all European clubs who come to Fratton. It has surprised me that these clubs in Europe are not used to playing in England, in a stadium as imposing as Fratton Park, and no one has picked this up - think that this will have a similar impact to when we first got to the Premier League. Also, I hope SWP comes along, and we break our 3 Pompey players starting for England record - maybe 5 or 6 (Shorey?) and get Capello a season ticket (am happy to share!).

  • Uefa cup - are you a fan of us being in this, or are you against it? Either way how well do you reckon we can do?
Certainly for it. It is an opportunity to start putting Pompey on the European map! Anyone notice how the down fall of our neighbours has resulted in most Weather programs having Portsmouth on the map, and no longer Scumhampton.... People know about pompey now in the UK, this is a real opportunity to do it on a European level. I'm not saying that following this campaign, we will be a global name such as Man Utd, Ajax, Barca, Inter, even PSG, but it really would help us on that ladder.

  • Which 3 players - that we could realistically sign - would you like to see arrive this summer?
    Shaun Wright Phillips
Left sided mid/winger like D'Alessandro (Please Harry!)

  • If you had to select 1 player to get shot of - or maybe to rephrase or make this decision easier, 'sacrifice' - to make a signing who would it be and why?
Diop - I really fail to see what he adds to the team. He is almost exactly like Amdy Faye when he came, started brilliantly but faded. With regards to sacrifice - well that's a different answer as it always involves money, who would we get the best return for to allow us to sign 3 other strong players. For me it has to be Muntari. I believe he hasn't gone yet (at least while I write this), and I do love the guy, but the munters/diarra partnership really didn't work so would love to see Nico move central, like he was in the Euros, and get a left winger (and a right winger, and a centre back, and a left back, and a back up centre mid whiz kid).

  • How many Pompey games do you expect to make this season?
Used to have a season ticket for years, started at the time of Rix really, then up until 3 years ago when I moved away (Essex now), so I really try to get to any game I can. Hopefully I will make 5 home league games, charity shield, 2/3 away games, and a home and away European pair (gotta get involved in a European Tour)

Thanks to dave.jolley81 for answering these.

That's the lot guys, I have no more of these to offer! So it is down to you now if we want more of these...

I am still feeling gutted and worried about Muntari leaving, but lets just hope Harry can put the money to good use. Good answers Dave.

Hi Dave - I'd noticed that about the weather map too - gives the expression 'on the map' real meaning.
