Redknapp playing mind games?

Harry Redknapp claims that he does not know if the money from the Sulley Muntari deal will be given back to him to reinvest in further signings - surely this is mind games from Redknapp?

I find it hard to believe that we would have sold Muntari had we not had plans lined up for others, or done so on the understanding that the money generated would be allowed to be re-used to sign the further 3 players that Redknapp feels he requires - a left back, central defender and right winger.

We do have a new training ground to pay for as well, but I would hope that players are not being sold to pay for this, as what good would a brand spanking new facility do us if we are not able to sustain our league placing, ideally improve upon it, therefore being the kind of club that deserves such facilities...

As I have said, maybe the selling of Muntari will come back to haunt us, but so long as this money in reinvested into buying the quality players that we want I feel myself that this was the right thing to do - if it is not given back to buy players then we would have made a mistake in selling!

This time of year managers put their poker faces on - its all cloak and dagger stuff - Redknapp seems to have the same one all the time before pulling something out of the fire, sadly his poker face is not very good anymore as he is not very good at bluffing... at least I hope not as I would be horrified if despite all the talk, we did not walk the walk and reinvest that money into making us even stronger...

soooo hope hes bluffing!!!...come on harry/pete...get it done!

It's all cat & mouse stuff. I don't see the need for panic. Yes we all want to bring top players but if Sasha doesn't want to, Harry can't can't we can. I think it's a mixture of a smokescreeen & tabloid daft headlines.
storagematt
Smoke and mirrors, Roy, smoke and mirrors. Having said that, I am a little worried that we've heard nothing positive about YK, NS and SWP in quite a while. I do trust Hal and hope that what he pulls out of the bag is 'Thierry Henryish' rather than 'Robbie Fowlerish'.
Et_tu_Pompeii
Call me naive, but what has Harry got to gain by saying he hasn't got any money? Kaboul will think Oh well then, I best go to Aston Villa and SWP has apparently already gone. How can he sell one of his best players to raise money for new signings and then say he does not know if the powers that be will actually let him use that money afterall. AND THEN say what smashing people the powers that be are? Doh - have I missed something? Its all nuts! If he's trying to send out the message that we don't have any money to possible Vendors, then he is also sending out the message to our purchasers that we are desperate for money and there are bargains to be had. I just hope after all these games (if thats what they are) that we still have a sustainable team to take us into the next season which will be the most arduous we have ever faced. But what do I know..... what does anybody know?
Gandor
T'was ever thus?

Rednapp playing mindgames ? - Ya think !!

Frankly, I'd be happier to learn we sold Muntari because we need the money to help balance the books, than I would to think we sold him to finance players who may not come and may well not be getting much service with a big hole in the midfield. WRT his comments on Peter, well what else can he say? If the money isn't there, it isn't Peter's fault and - if anything - it's Harry making Peter's job more difficult, not the other way around. Peter always stays tight-lipped on specifics. Harry seems to have learned his poker face from Mike Matusow and Phil Hellmuth. He could learn a few lessons from Barry Greenstein in how to conduct oneself.

It doesn't add up if the money is there. We had enough to buy Crouch - reportedly 11m. Then they said there wasn't any more in the pot. Then we sold Sulley - reportedly 12m - so surely there's money now? I think there's a lot of things said as negotiation tactics these days (I'm still hoping SWP not leaving Chelski is part of it) and this must be too. But I do take Gandor's point - I can't see how it works either.
tracyc
tracy c, if we follow your point, 11 mill out for crouch, 12mill in for sulley, so plus 1millthen - the 3.6 mill to udinese, we are 2.6 mill down on the whole thing. H will get into trouble for saying this so i'm afraid this aint mind games this is bleating. We shouldnt have sold Sulley and even more so if we hadnt confirmed the required replacements.
russellm
I think its Harrys way of saying "for gods sake pay what they are asking!"
paultsmouth
Sadly this has become the norm and although I should now expect it - It still does my head in. 'bout time Harry & Peter said nothing rather than blurt of what's in their heads at the time.

Were not getting SWP now, he wants to stick it out with Chelsea.. I think we've lost Kaboul.. Havent heard anything about Shorey for wks and now we're apparently skint...?? ahhhh
nodster
I think Muntari wanted to move to Inter and, as HR has always said, he wouldn't stand in the way of someone wanting to move on. I think this is part of his appeal to players.
Pompeyscum
I don't believe Harry realy has any idea what Sasha is going to give him for transfers. ANSWER- Very little. It will be going into paying off debts that Sasha has accumulated by big noting himself as someone with endless money that no one has seen yet. Pompey are as good as broke and Sasha is full of unforfilled promises.
frattonaussie
to be fair FA sasha has done a hell of alot behind the scenes putting money and funding into things that 'should' bare fruits in the years to come, his funding has helped set up what will hopefully produce some wonderful talent through the academy set-up, we have seen some improvements to fratton that didnt happen under others, we have a brand spanking new state of the art training complex on its way, we have won the fa cup under his leadership and signed some world class footballers that we would not have signed otherwise so all in all i do not think we have done bad!
at the end of the day i do not think it is fair to say that sasha is 'full of unforfilled promises' as what has he promised that has not been delivered, tbh what has he promised at all...
pompeyrug
Well said Rug, and in fairness if Pompey council would get their backsides into gear (like Gosport) then maybe we can get the news we are all waiting on about the new stadium. No one really knows how much Sasha has got other than himself. Don't think he has done us too bad up to now. All the transfer merry go round is no different than to any other season. A lot of deals are already done all bar the signature long time before the fans get to find out about it. Probably as we speak SWP has given an intention to sign for us and the usual smoke screens and deflections are being used by the club. We will be strong and the addition of Little and Crouch alone will improve the team.
blarmy
The stadium is still all talk. The training facilities are approved and thats all. All the money spent on players and running the club has come from income received from the gate, tv rights and sponsorships and money borrowed against PFC assets. Sure we have done well thanks to shrewd dealing by Harry and others in bringing in mainly cheap players who have done well and young academy players. All Sasha has given is his name so the money can be borrowed. All the rest has been done by others. We are living in a house of cards and it won't take much for it to fall.
frattonaussie
I think that is being a bit too negative FA, and this is the reason that I think Harry should not be allowed to make press statements! It upsets the fans and no doubt the players to. Just do what you do best Harry and manage the Blue Army!
sneakay
OK, this may not go down too well but, not to put too fine a point on it, Harry should keep his mouth shut
NinjaTim
This statement probably followed a heated discussion deep within the Pompey backrooms that didn't go completely Arry's way. Maybe he does need to learn when to keep his mouth shut. I hear Kaboul has rejected Sunderland and wants to come to Pompey, I have also seen rumour that Arry has tabled 5m for him.
tracyc
Sorry chaps, not had much time to contribute lately. I am one of the biggest 'arry fans around, where would we be without him?? But, big but, I can't understand this latest comment of his. No, he shouldn't of said it, and if true he shouldn't have sold Muntari if he wasn't doing it to generate cash for others.
pompey4me
I have not been Harry's greatest supporter in the past but more and more I am getting on his side. I think he is being set up by Sasha to take the heat if or when things start to go wrong. I think he genuinely thought he would get the money from Muntari plus more and therefore let Muntari go. He is now waking up to the set up and is covering himself by making these statements. Unfortunately the statements could also unsettle players but is that Harry's fault or Sashas.
frattonaussie
no one knows whats really going on do they - but i still find it incredibly hard to beleive that sulley would be sold unless the money could be used for signings...
i do think it best that we stop airing things in public tho, as its not helping the club, its unsettling the fans and is making what is becoming a very professionally organised and run club look far from it...
pompeyrug
FA I really don't think its a set-up just more that they don't have a communication or PR strategy... And as a result they look a shambles.. but nothing more than that
