Pompey nip in to steal Kaboul!

'Reports' in The Daily Star shortly after midnight were 'claiming' that Harry Redknapp is himself 'claiming' we have nipped in to beat Sunderland and Villa to the signing of Younes Kaboul!

The Frenchman has been a target all summer, with him also very keen to come here but a deal for him to go to Sunderland looked nailed on until he requested extra time 'on family reasons' before committing to the deal - this coincided with a reported late bid from Villa...

It was thought that we might launch a late counter offer ourselves, and this appears to be the case if the quotes are to be believed: 'Sunderland and Villa both made fantastic offers, but the lad decided he wanted to come to Portsmouth.

'Hopefully the deal will be completed over the weekend. Younes is a good, young player with bags of potential. He will be a great addition to our squad.'

The suggestion is that we have signed him from Spurs in a deal worth £3m?

'If' we have pulled off this signing and stolen him from under the noses of Villa - and more to the point Sunderland, as pleased as I will be as I think he has tremendous ability despite a 'difficult' season with Spurs, I would be slightly disappointed in a way as after calling for a Pompey move all summer, when it looked like he would not get it after initial claims he would not sign for Sunderland 'even if there was an earthquake', after deciding it would be a good move for him in the end - when maybe no one else was interested? - to then make another U-turn leaves a slight sour taste in my mouth to be honest...

Then again, that said 'if' this is confirmed as having happened that's the way things are in football these days isn't it really I guess! Sunderland's loss would be our gain, and as said I think his signing would eventually be a very good gain.

He had a big reputation but didn't settle at Spurs so he may be a good buy if it eventuates.

Lots of promising players go to Spurs and flop, so I won't hold that against him if he signs for us. Clean slate time.

I do not think Sunderland management will be very happy if this is true, we did the same with Nugent.

Sounds like a typical Redknapp/Storrie transfer - cloak and dagger stuff. If true it will be great news as Kaboul is a fine young prospect.

. . . . . and at, possibly, 3 million, a steal!

What are you prattling on about? Sour taste? You write as if you can piece together the full detail of Kabouls thoughts and actions from a couple of red-top headlines. Is anyone really that dense? Even if the gist of those stories are true they tell how Kaboul alwaya wanted to comer to FP, settled for Sunderland when that appeared not to be happening and at the last minute had his wish fulfilled. What is remotely wrong about that? Sour taste? Get a grip. Let's just hope it happens

I've got no doubt the player wants to go to Pompey but for 3m? Spurs would not sell a player who last year cost them 7m this year for 3m, especially when Sunderland are offering twice that. This saga might just have a couple more twists yet :)

Come on boys steal him from under the noses of Sunderland.

Pompey have had an offer on the table for weeks, so our interest is hardly 11th hour, maybe the sum has just been upped, Kaboul though has the talent, alongside Distin (speaks the language) or Campbell he will get the fatherly guidance he needs, when King played alongside him at Spurs he looked top-drawer

this is would be a fantastic addition him and distin in defence both speak french like paultsmouth mentioned he is atheletic and quick with a big reputation.Whoever joins spurs is usually a flop but when they leave and join us there not for example : Mendes and sean davis couldnt get in the team at spurs but wen they joined us they were regulars and help us stay in the premier league. Good Buisness !!

No sour taste for me, you have a player who's not wanted by Spurs, who'd love to come to us. As usually happens with Pompey the deal was long and protracted and looked like it wouldn't happen. Rather than risk staying at a club that didn't want him he was prepared to go to one that whilst not his first choice, did actually want him. In those circumstances you can't blame the guy, then right at the end the chance opens up for his prefered move. What would you do? He hadn't actually signed for Sunderland so he's done nothing wrong.

No sour taste for me either, although I imagine Roy Keane will be spitting half-chewed granite in all directions if it happens. Arguably we shouldn't have let it get to this point, but that's another argument and moot now anyway. A good player at a very reasonable price.

Tricky D, there really is no need to be quite so aggressive. Where do you think you are? At ManU addressing that oaf United4Life? I actually happen to agree with you and feel no blame can be laid at Kaboul's door. But if what Phartman says is true and Sunderland have offered twice that - then I think there will be more twists and turns. Fingers crossed then!

Of course, it would appear that the reason our negotiations are so protracted is because we don't have a lot of money. Tricky D, Phartman and stillthewhizz, Do you like Pizza? Here are Vital Portsmouth we can thoroughly recommend Domino Pizzas to you. We eat them all the time!

Gandor - Well that depends on what special offers you're doing and whether I get a cut of your commission, otherwise I'm on a diet :)

We shall see on this one. Cant imagine Harry would say something like that unless he thought it was a done deal. Let's just hope Kaboul can stop the mistakes and start concentrating for 90 minutes!
