'Reports' in The Daily Star shortly after midnight were 'claiming' that Harry Redknapp is himself 'claiming' we have nipped in to beat Sunderland and Villa to the signing of Younes Kaboul!
The Frenchman has been a target all summer, with him also very keen to come here but a deal for him to go to Sunderland looked nailed on until he requested extra time 'on family reasons' before committing to the deal - this coincided with a reported late bid from Villa...
It was thought that we might launch a late counter offer ourselves, and this appears to be the case if the quotes are to be believed: 'Sunderland and Villa both made fantastic offers, but the lad decided he wanted to come to Portsmouth.
'Hopefully the deal will be completed over the weekend. Younes is a good, young player with bags of potential. He will be a great addition to our squad.'
The suggestion is that we have signed him from Spurs in a deal worth £3m?
'If' we have pulled off this signing and stolen him from under the noses of Villa - and more to the point Sunderland, as pleased as I will be as I think he has tremendous ability despite a 'difficult' season with Spurs, I would be slightly disappointed in a way as after calling for a Pompey move all summer, when it looked like he would not get it after initial claims he would not sign for Sunderland 'even if there was an earthquake', after deciding it would be a good move for him in the end - when maybe no one else was interested? - to then make another U-turn leaves a slight sour taste in my mouth to be honest...
Then again, that said 'if' this is confirmed as having happened that's the way things are in football these days isn't it really I guess! Sunderland's loss would be our gain, and as said I think his signing would eventually be a very good gain.
