Mendes staying with Pompey... probably...

With Sulley Muntari's move to Inter appearing a mere formality now, with Harry Redknapp now commenting on the matter when speaking in The Daily Record, a possible move to Rangers for Pedro Mendes 'should' be off: 'I did speak to Walter about a couple of players and he said he liked Mendes.

'I think his wages might have been an issue for Rangers, but the biggest problem is that with Muntari going I will need Pedro in my team.

'He played his way back into our side for the FA Cup final - he's a terrific player and a really good lad - and now Muntari is leaving I need him to stay.

'Pedro is not a player I want to lose.

'Because of the Muntari deal I don't need to sell anyone else so it would take a big offer for me to consider letting Pedro go.'

So we will probably sell him next week then...

Mendes does not have the muscle that Muntari does but has great quality. And can we really afford to lose a player of his quality? Even more so now... and most certainly not for anything around £2m, what sort of offer is that for a player of his ability, 29 or not!

We will just have to see what happens, I would hope that we have plans up our sleeves with the Muntari sell - which I am sure we do, but we cannot afford to lose that many more quality players in midfield, as to be honest despite having fairly large amounts of them the quality is not there with all of them... I do not think that we should forget Arnold Mvuemba though, there is a fair chance that he could look to stake a claim this season? And he is not a shabby player is he!

There was plenty of Shaun Wright-Phillips talk going on late yesterday evening, and this is carrying on again today - but again with this issue we will just have to wait and see...

I wasn't keen on losing Pedro even before the Sulley to Inter deal kicked-off... definately not keen on it now. Who could we get of his quality for £2m ?.. In a word.. Nobody !

hello rug mate. i think its quite obvious we were trying to sell fringe players (maybe 3-4) to fund an SWP bid .... HR thinks Muntari is expendable (shame, i think he would be great this season ... and if the special one is interested in paying £3m MORE than fat lampard we should be pleased we have done great business) this paves the way for an SWP bid. SWP confirmed he wants to reignite his career with HR and if we had rushed the Muntari deal we could have swooped for Kaboul. I think Shorey will come now as well. However, I think we now need a decent MC cover ... someone similar to the Muntari presence.

I'm surprised that with a quality midfielder moving to inter that nobody has mentioned about them shipping one the other way.. Wasn't Vieira linked with us back in June ? . You watch now I've mentioned it, it'll be in the papers tomorrow !

Ah, and there was me assuming it was players agents that were responsible for all the rumour mongering! Now I know the truth!
Tantona
my first choice midfield then would be Krancjar, Diarra, Mendes and SWP tha leave Papa, Arnold, Utaka and Davis as backup...
southportpompey
Rug, totally understand your sarcasm, "HR"'s claim of a £12 million offer from Monaco for Kranjcar is being totally denied by their club president.

now this doesnt make sense at all! this is what peter storrie is quoted as saying in the news about pedro mendes and talk of mendes going...Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie put talk of Mendes moving to Rangers down to agents.
He said: 'I do not know where it's come from.
'Pedro is part of the squad and Harry definitely wants him to stay.
'There's nothing in it. I think it's just agents stirring again.'
redknapp must be an agent now then as well as a manager as hasnt he just mentioned talk about mendes and a possible move to rangers...
altho with so many 'quotes' flying around all the time it is hard to know what to believe and what not to believe anymore...

Rangers are taking Adam Johnson from Boro' on loan for the season so maybe that also scotches rumours about Pedro. They cannot afford his wages. Agree with Rug on Arnold too.

Smoke and Mirrors, shame about Sulley but good business. Bring in SWP and a decent Centre Back and keep Pedro. Utaka and Diop are possibly expendable.
bluedr
I see that Kaboul is not a done deal anymore as he has asked for extra time think about the move. Aston Villa have put in a fresh bid and I imagine we mite as well if Muntari is sold.
sneakay
lol thought we might bt i also heard bout us makin a bif for Lens fullback Nadir Belhadj altho i have no idea how gd he is lol

Don't really want to see Muntari go but it's all plusses if we make 7 million and keep Pedro.
Steve C
reckon this could be good buisness from pompey as muntari is good but how can u refuse a £12.7mill bid for a player of his quality ? hopefully some others follow like traore , pamarot , utaka , diop then hopefully swp will be joining .Glad mendes is staying he will be a key part in our season he brings the best out of diarria and he likes to spray the ball around.

Rangers are not having much luck they have now given up on Steve Davis at Fulham as they cannot agree a fee. I ask why do they need an aging snooker player?
eastneydave
Remember that the 12.7 for Muntari is actually 11 now and the rest in bonuses, and that Udinese are going to take a big chunk of that 11 million as a sell-on fee, so by the time we factor in the rise in player prices over the past year, we'll be lucky to get back what we paid for him. I'm surprised we haven't already heard renewed talk about Vieira, but it won't happen because he would expect a wage we can't afford to pay him.
