Pedro Mendes off to Rangers?

Early reports today, in what The Daily Record claim is an 'exclusive' are saying that Rangers have opened preliminary talks with Pompey about a possible move North of the boarder for Pedro Mendes.

With Harry Redknapp needing to sell before he can buy the suggestion is that a fee of around £2.5m would be enough to take him to Scotland - but the sticking point could be his £32,000 per week wage demands...

It looked like Mendes would be staying after all, but maybe not? If we do sell him though I would hope it would not be for a measly £2.5m as he is worth much more than that - besides what quality, as good if not better than Pedro, would £2.5m bring in!

My thinking is that I hope this does not happen, and it is not true, but 'if' we have/will accept a bid for the player it is only a matter of time before he goes, as once you start doing this it becomes clear to people that you are willing to cash in on them.

As I say 'if' we really do feel the need to cash in on Mendes lets at least cash in with a more respectable amount than a pitiful £2.5m...

Agree 100% Rug, it would be a terrible mistake to sell Mendes. If the price quoted is true, "HR" has lost his marbles.

£2.5m is nothing, it would basically cover crouchies wages for a year pluys save £1m on wages paid out - it'll hardly help raise funds will it...
we will not find a player of pedro's quality for such a measly amount and selling genuine fringe players is fine, but pedro is too good a player to be classed as a 'fringe player'...
the problem is rangers do not have alot of money themselves, so i couldnt see them going much higher than £2.5m anyway - hopefully this is nothing more than 'transfer rumour'.

007, you seem to have a marbles fetish. Sentiment aside, £2.5m is good business. Yes I'd rather we keep him, like I wish we kept Matty, GON & Benji but things move on. Whatever happens to Pedro he will be a massive legend. Those of there, especially at the Fratton End when those 2 rockets flew in, will remain with us forever. Great if stays but if he has to go, so be it. Life's not about being fair.

I hope he doesn't go but it won't suprise me if he does go. Harry wants money- any amount - quickly to buy SWP so Rangers may pick up a bargain. I think the sticking point will be Pedro wanting to go to that god forsaken hole of a place with worse weather than Portsmouth especially as his wife wants to go back to Portugal and the sunshine.

I can't see him settling in Scotland. That, and the fact that only one scottish paper is running the story, makes me think (and hope) that it is nothing but air - deep fried of course.

My concern over all our transfer activity is the amount of funds available. Sunderland are looking at spending over 20m and yet we have only spent 11m and now we have to sell before we can spend. I know Sacha has got other club projects, such as the training ground and the new ground, but we do need to keep improving on the pitch. I suppose it's a bit of a catch 22 situation here!!

Bex, You have to consider wages as well as just buying players. I would say that we are buying a much higher calibre of player than Sunderland, and these players demmand better pay. That is what is eating up our transfer money. It would be a real shame to see Pedro go as I think he still has a big part to play in our squad, more than Davis or Hughes anyway.

This is total BS. If he sells Pedro for 2.5 then I have know a very reasonably priced swamp in Florida he could " cheaply " convert in to a golf course.

WALTER SMITH HAS HAD HIS CRITICS BUT IN THE spl TRYING TO COMPETE WITH THE WAGES IN ENGLAND IS NOT EXACTLY EASY , SO ALL HIS CRITICS WILL HAVE TO EAT HUMBLE PIE AS i HAVE ALL FAITH IN HIM SECURING THE FINAL TOUCHES TO THE Gers squad and us winning the SPL this year. Any youngster that turns down a move to Rangers to play at Fulham or Hull etc are off there heads even if I was offered 30k a week there and 10k a eek at Rangers, I would not hesitate in going to Rangers, one of Britains biggest clubs and with a massive fan base, we are on the verge of the Revooution and we shall be back in with the big guns in 2/3 years time

I do wish we didn't always conduct our outgoing transfers like a car boot sale. We've picked up a few bargains coming in, sure, but when it comes to selling, everyone gets a cut-price, closing-down, everything must go bargain.

I reckon Mendes will stay, he is a loyal sort and if feels wanted will go nowhere, after signing from Spurs he was the first to say he would still be with Pompey even if we dropped
