'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Premier League All Time Starting XI

We all know that many of us (namely Dave, Chix, Tim, and Tony) know all about Pompey past and present, and that we have no problem in naming our best team ever.

What happens though if you had to name the best Premier League team ever covering all the players from all the Premier League Teams? Would you be able to do it? Who would be in your dream team if you had the chance to pick one?

Well now is your chance, as Vital Pompey are going to construct a 'Premier League All Time Starting XI'.

Here is how it works, rather than everyone just spilling out in the forum in one go causing chaos, each position (standard 4-4-2) will be placed in turn, in the site poll with a list of choices for that position for you to vote on. There will be three or four days for each vote before the position is changed to the next, and the announcement of who won is made.

I (this being sneakay) am happy to take some suggestions for each position - do this below - as I will without doubt miss at least one person here and there. There will always be the option of voting for 'other' for this reason. If you think that someone has been missed then please let me know who that other person is.

At the end of the voting the full line up will be announced, and then the chaotic debating on our choices can be started.

So to kick it all off we are going to start with the Keepers. Please take a look at the site poll and make your vote.

Know all about Pompey past and present?? I can't remember what I was doing last week, half the time! Seriously though, this is a good debating ground Sneakay. I've done mine.No brainer from the list given (shame Alan Knight wasn't around in PL days)
UKTony
Nothing like nabbing an idea off another site ;)
marron
.and calamity James? you have to be kidding me - the man is an accident (or 2,3,4,5 etc.) waiting to happen.
marron
How is Peter Schmeichel not winning this poll?!
TheSlaven
He is now!
marron
Should be interesting!
storagematt
Sneakay - what would you do if 'Other' won the poll?
eastneydave
Dave - Allow Alan Knight and John Milkins in for a "play off" :)
UKTony
David James in this list is a joke right?! No Shay Given, Neville Southall but James makes it.
North Upper
wat about shaka hislop?
Sulley Fan
Cudicini?
Adilson
Not sure why everyone is having a go at Jamo? His great saves far outweigh his clangers. No one has a go at Ronald if he misses a chance because he scores more than he misses. Neville Southall brilliant as he was, probably at his best prior to the prem. Given, maybe when he is fit but what have Newcastle ever achieved with him in goal? Cudicini, not quite.
storagematt
who is nabbing what from other sites marron? these kinds of things are done all the time arent they...
james has played in every premier league season, hence - i assume? - for his inclusion in the poll?
cudicini is a fantastic keeper, but hasnt played enough football to be considered a 'great' has he, shay given i will give North Upper that one but southall as great a keeper as he was, his best days were gone really during his premier league years - which again were quite limited. one of britains greatest ever tho! at the end of the day these would all fall into 'other' anyway...
as it stands jamo is 2nd in the poll, as great as i think he is now i dont agree that over the course of the premier league he is the 2nd greatest ever tbh...
pompeyrug
you must have been tying as i was mate, similar thoughts there - great minds they say... maybe not :-)
pompeyrug
Well I am glad to see that everyone has already started debating without me. I wanted to limit the choices, and as mentiond I will probably not think of someone. I don't see why everyone is having ago about Jamo in the Poll. It's funny how everyone remebers you for your mistakes and not the great saves you constantly have made over the last 10 years.
sneakay
unfair to right of David James, he made mistakes when he was younger but learned from them. he's been at the highest level for so long he must be doing something right. All goal keepers make mistakes, unfortunately for them a mistake usually results in a goal, elsewhere on the pitch you've a very good chance of getting away with it. I saw him play at Fratton for Watford and he was brilliant thought then he'd go all the way. Harry had the right idea at least by signing him he's ended his habit of playing blinders against us. Maybe there are a few names missing from the list. but you could raise doubts about everyone, Seaman was brilliant but perhaps played a little too long. Schmeichel superb at united, ordinary afterwards. Friedel certainly a good keeper but probably plenty better. Van de Sar better before united. Personally I'm going for Jamo (never thought i'd ever say that) He's got better as he's got older, certainly better now than 5 years ago.
Steve C
i want chalkias.
jbaker
Yeah I can't understand why David 'Most clean sheets in the history of the premier league' James is in that list either. Bizarre.
stooH
James 3rd, Cech 2nd, Schmeichel 1st. Chalkias only misses out through shear bad luck
Pompeyscum
Got to be Schmiechel for me, raised the bar of goalkeeping in this country.
pompey4me
I agree P4me.. although I disliked his arrogance I thought he was a cracking keeper... Jamo is great for Pompey and is probably one of (if not) the best in the prem at the mo (behind Cech) but overall it has to be Schmiechel.. and to think he's secured a role in Corrie too
Chix
Corrie??? Is he in that now? Pulling my leg! Soap free house this one! (and i mean the tv thing, not the thing in the bathroom.) Yep, Jamo holds the clean sheet record, but, I dunno, it doesn't seem right voting for someone still playing? All time great implies a player that has finished doesnt it?
pompey4me
Well next up will be Right Back so if anyone has any ideas then please let me know
sneakay
i cannot stand the fella but gary neville would need to be one of the right back names wouldnt he...
pompeyrug
erm, lee dixon another? running out of names already!
pompeyrug
lauren perhaps... other right backs guys?
pompeyrug
