Talking Pompey with stillthewhizz

Vital Pompey has previously brought you the 'knowing me knowing you series' - which is still running, so others will be added and if you want to do one just email - now we have a little something extra this summer...

stillthewhizz was asked 5 quick questions, this is what they said.

  • What are you expecting from Pompey in the coming season?
A better league performance. For me the next season is about stability and keeping up our top half status. This might be harder than we expect with the UEFA Cup as a distraction and perhaps a touch of over-confidence with the FA Cup win. We have to be honest and say it's unlikely we'll repeat that success again but we must work hard to get on top of the clubs outside of the Top 4. Tottenham look like our closest challengers to that so far in the transfer market but there is a long way to go.

Also I would like the home form to improve as last year was pretty unacceptable. Our new striker partnership of Defoe & Crouch should do something to see that off but I am very worried about the pace and fitness of our captain, Solzier.

  • Uefa cup - are you a fan of us being in this, or are you against it? Either way how well do you reckon we can do?
I think it's a hideously boring competition. However, it does give us the cache of being able to say we're in Europe and if we meet one of the big boys (AC Milan) it'll be worth it. I'm not really bothered how we do as it can effect the more important league form, but yet if we were to go and win it I guess I'd be delighted. But the UEFA Cup isn't a patch on the Champions League, which I also find hideously boring. I'm sure we can get as far as Tottenham and Everton did last year.

  • Which 3 players - that we could realistically sign - would you like to see arrive this summer?
Shaun Wright-Phillips has to be the number one signing now we've got Crouch. What Ian Wright said was absolutely spot on. I'm also a bit worried about the age and pace of Hermann next year so would like to see a replacement for him signed. Fabio Grosso springs to mind. He was fantastic for Italy in the Euro's (one of the few bright spots) and is a part of a Lyon team, which seems to be splitting up at the moment. The final position we desperately need to fill is in central defence. I'm not so sure of Mensah anymore so we'd have to see.

  • If you had to select 1 player to get shot of - or maybe to rephrase or make this decision easier, 'sacrifice' - to make a signing who would it be and why?
Kanu. Enough is enough. Leave the club with your head held high as a hero and a champion. With Crouch we really don't need Kanu anymore. I'd also agree to lose Nugent for someone more capable of scoring from the bench.

  • How many Pompey games do you expect to make this season?
All home games as a season ticket holder. 3 or 4 cup games and probably 6 or so away games.

Thanks to stillthewhizz for answering these.

Stillthewhizz on the button. Uefa cup must not come at expense of league position and maybe another domestic cup run.

STW, no disagreements from me on any of that.
    16/07/2008 08:47:00
Hard to argue with what you say STW, as seems to be thread with most of us who have had their say.

Has Mensah not signed for Wigan or Birmingham or someone?
    16/07/2008 13:06:00
Glad you mentioned our home performance, let us down badly last year. Quite right in what you say elsewhere, although I am hoping Nugent will come good next season.
    16/07/2008 16:50:00
Personally I'd go out and bag Shaun Wright Phillips which would mean we could then class John Utaka as an out and out striker and have Glen Little as SWP's stand-in. We could then free up some cash by letting go of young Nugent who sits in the stands eating Twix's and drinking full fat Coke.
    16/07/2008 17:37:00
lol STW... Can't say I disagree with much of what you say... but are you sure it's FULL FAT Coke ?

    Another loan for Oxlade-Chamberlain

As I think we all know by now Oxlade-Chamberlain is the son of former Pompey winger Mark Chamberlain and the brother of Arsenal's & England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
