Talking Pompey with tracyc

Talking Pompey with tracyc

Vital Pompey has previously brought you the 'knowing me knowing you series' - which is still running, so others will be added and if you want to do one just email - now we have a little something extra this summer...

tracyc was asked 5 quick questions, this is what they said.

  • What are you expecting from Pompey in the coming season?
Apart from win the Uefa cup, qualify for the champions league and retain the FA cup? Then again ... This season is different to any we've ever had before because of the UEFA cup, and because of the class of squad we have. I would like a decent run in the UEFA, and at least a top 10 finish - qualifying for next years Uefa through the league would be nice too, and something to aim for. What I really want is to have an exciting team that win exciting matches and keep the rest of the premier league on their toes. I am expecting us to go out of the FA cup in the 3rd or 4th round this time, and for the final to be between 2 'big 4' clubs. I have also read and taken on board 'Arry's warning that being in the UEFA can affect the league season, and I'm prepared to let it, just a little, which is why I'm saying I'm only EXPECTING a top 10 finish, although better would be nice. It would be nice to be talked about as a medium-big, successful club, which is starting to happen, its up to us to keep it going.

  • Uefa cup - are you a fan of us being in this, or are you against it? Either way how well do you reckon we can do?
I am very excited about the UEFA cup because it's a first for us, and I see it as a mark of success. How well we'll do depends on who we draw at the end of the day, but we've proved last season we can give the very best a decent run for their money on our day. To be honest, I don't know too much about the competition itself. I'm hoping we win the initial home/away leg round and get into the group stages. Then if we don't come through that, at least I hope we can put in a good attempt. Of course there's no reason we can't win the whole thing, but I don't expect we will really. I'd like to go both home and away, but it does depend on who we draw and how scared I am of their police, as well as getting time off work. AC Milan sounds great, apart from Italian police, I might just have to brave it if we draw them.

  • Which 3 players - that we could realistically sign - would you like to see arrive this summer?
As I write this Crouch is reportedly having a medical, and he would be top of my list. I would also like to see SWP, and I suspect he might be the next one, especially as his Dad has reportedly told him to come to Pompey (to keep an eye on his brother?) We need more defensive cover, although Primus is back so it's not so desperate. On the other hand Younes Kaboul has expressed a wish to play for us, that's the kind of attitude I like.

  • If you had to select 1 player to get shot of - or maybe to rephrase or make this decision easier, 'sacrifice' - to make a signing who would it be and why?
Like most people the first name that springs to mind is Utaka, who was very disappointing last season, BUT he does have ability and if he has both Glen Little and SWP pushing for his place it might make him make the effort and become the player we know he can be. A couple more goals like the one against Bolton last year would be worth having. So I'm going to buck the trend and say Diop instead. He looked good when he first came but that tailed off, and he couldn't score in a proverbial. He just isn't in the same class as the players we are bringing in these days.

  • How many Pompey games do you expect to make this season?
Not too sure. Don't have a season ticket but I am hoping to go to 4-6 selected away games, and possibly somewhere between 6-10 home games, starting (hopefully) with ManU second game of the season. Also depends on the UEFA cup, ideally I'd like to go to those, but it all depends on who we get and when, as well as the availability of tickets. And then there are domestic cup competitions as well. I won't make the Shield though as I'll be a long way away. For the first time in a few years I won't make ANY pre-season friendlies at all.

Thanks to tracyc for answering these.

Nice one TracieC. I agree about Diop, I just think he'll come good sooner than Utaka.

Very well written Tracy. I think Diop will be needed for Europe and Utaka I agree will come good if he sees his place up for grabs.

Nice answers Tracy, I think that it is only fair to expect a top 10 finish with the squad that we are building.

Good to hear from you tracyc. Yes the foreign police may give all some concern. Diop has under performed & does need his eye sight tested.

Nice read tracy, I cant help but think about Boro a few years back and how it affected their season too. But they were much poorer side than the one we have and even bolton progressed well last year. I think we will get to semis at least.

Thanks for your comments, guys. Now that Crouch has signed, very excited about the squad we have, we may even push the 'big 4' after all.

thats the spirit tracy, im not expecting it but it 'could' happen - as ive said before had we had more interest in the final half dozen games last season, and not had the dodgy patcharound christmas and just after we could have got 4th last season...
