Crouch completes his move

Peter Crouch has finally completed his return to Pompey, with the final details ironed out and his undisclosed - but reported £11m - club record signing from Liverpool rubberstamped, with things confirmed in this afternoons press conference, which confirmed his signing on a 4-year-contract.

We knew this had been coming for sometime, but it is good to get it fully completed and for us to be able to welcome him back 100% as a Pompey player, and I am certain he will prove a fantastic signing once again - as he did the first time we signed him, but he will stay much longer this time too...

What a mouth-watering prospect a pairing of Crouch and Jermain Defoe is, there are not any other all English strike pairings in the top flight are there?

The strikers that we have this season look fantastic do they not? On paper if nothing else - now is the time for this to be proven! All we need now is for Kanu to agree to his contract that he has been offered - and only on the terms offered! - and we are laughing.

The press conference, scheduled for 1pm finally started around 1.30ish with Peter Storrie, Harry Redknapp and of course Crouch in attendance. All spoke about what a great signing he will be and how it shows further signs of our ambition and the giant strides forward we are making, with the England man insisting that he had his heart set on a return to Pompey, and Pompey alone once an interest was revealed to Liverpool at the end of last season. He also believes that Redknapp brings the best out of him so to work for him again meant a lot to him.

When Redknapp entered the press conference he said 'Hello Peter', and at the end of this he claimed that this was the first time that he had spoken to Crouch in person since last summer when we won the Asia Trophy!

Rumours had been circulating that another player could be unveiled today as well, but this was not the case but more signings are expected.

So guys, it is finally done. I am delighted, as I think he is a fantastic signing, as ever thoughts on this please...

i said we would get defoe, kept banging on about it - kept banging on about crouchy coming back too, and its happened :-)
im not expecting too much, and will not be 'demanding' we do this and do that but i honestly think that we can challenge the top 4 this season - liverpool are there for the taking, and as long as they have benitez in charge this will remain the case... he is a good manager, but he doesnt seem to graspt the league, champions league seems to mean more - maybe thats the foreign manager not grasping the league system?
if everton can challenge, spurs and villa think they can get 4th why cant we? again tho i cannot stress im not expecting this, but with goal now looking very possible, if we find the right service we can make even more of a step up...

Welcome back two-meter-peter ... If you can match your scoring record from your first stint in Pompey blue.. then we'll be well chuffed... Crouch and Defoe... James & Johnson.... maybe SWP.... Mr Capello .... Pompey is located at the end of the M275 ... head for that and come and see your 'real' stars in action.

I wasn't fussed if we got Crouch or not but I have warmed to the thought more lately (or been brainwashed). Maybe the 20 goals plus each that Crouch and Defoe can (will) get next season has something to do with it. As I think Little will be the outstanding signing for this period and Nugent says he is staying, I will be happy if SWP joins us but not upset if he doesn't. I would rather see us get a top left midfielder (winger) as I think that is our weak side now. Niko can do a job but needs back up and we just don't have it for him. Our defence is OK as it is but Harry has his sights on players to give us more depth so that will be taken care of.

assumimng that thye retain some form; i think we can be looking at 35 goals between them not to mention thise that should come from others. We need to think about defensive cover, a winger and a possible replacement for papa quashie diop

Aussie, I don't rate Kranky on the wing - he hasn't got the 5m burst speed you need to get past players - both Herman and Munters did a better job last season when pushed to the wing - so yep agree, that's our weak spot now.

Just been watchin Premiership years on SkySports, review of the 04/05 season - what a year that was. Wanted to comment because this was the season Crouch was at scum with Harry and got them relegated - the year Berger got those screamers in the league, and delia smith became famous for lets be havin you shout! The point im making is that 3/4 years is a different world to today. I always have been proud of Pompey, but now I feel like a 9 year old on xmas morning. What a feeling this is to look at the potential team for the forthcoming season. It was the same feeling last season to some extent but this is sooooo much better. Crouch, Defoe, Nugent, Kanu, Sahar (and i expect some others to raise their heads now - maybe subotic) up front. I would love SWP in - really he could play on either side. Hearing this morning that we are moving on with this and shorey, with a loan for kaboul. PUP and Proud!

If we buy Shorey and Sean Wright-Phillips we would have the the basis of AN England team. Would the England manager seriously consider playing 5 Pompey players in the side?
That is an exciting thought
  • FA Cup winners
  • new, Herzog & de Meuron, designer stadium on the coast
  • supplying the core of The England team
  • a venue for a imminent World Cup
  • regular European competitors
  • possibly breaking the stranglehold of the 'Big Four'
What a time to be supporting Pompey; how can any kids in Portsmouth walk around in Man Ure, arsenal and Chelsea shirts?

Et-Tu so true about the kids in football shirts, there has never been a better time for a Pompey kid to support his/her local team ... I hope the pompey shirt becomes a fashion item.. but hope for mums and dads the cost doesn't get any higher !

On that point.. since we won the FA I've seen so many more Pompey shirts in Salisbury (where I now live) It used to be just me wearing the blue.. but now there are not exactly everywhere, but I see one or two a day... whether they are new supporters or just folks/kids who were previously tentative about wearing their colours when there just as many scummers around I don't know ..but it does make me smile to know that I'm not alone..
