Nugent talks the talk again...

...but can he now walk the walk...

Once again Dave Nugent is talking a good talk, telling The News that he is ready to put his disastrous - from his own personal point of view - first season at Pompey behind him.

He believes that his improved fitness, the work that he has done in the gym and the fact that he can take part in the whole of the pre-season this time round will benefit him and this season 'is the one for him': 'speaking on a personal level, last season was a disaster, really.

'My fitness, my injuries, the lack of games I played - none of it helped and it's fair to say I was disappointed with it all.

'It didn't help that I signed two weeks into pre-season training last year. From then on I was playing a bit of catch-up with the other lads.

'Now I can start from scratch and from day one show the gaffer what I can do.

'I feel good and I'm going to give my all to get into the team. I have to play games.

'Last season others were scoring, such as Benjani and then Jermain, so I couldn't argue with that.

'But I've got to try my hardest this season and show the gaffer what I can do.

'I really want to have a good pre-season - and I think I will. This will be my season.'

As said, one again he is talking a good talk - attitude wise you cannot fault the fella can you and whilst I still firmly believe that he has the quality to make it at the highest level, and as much as I want him to stay I am still not convinced that he is part of the managers long term thinking... that said he really impressed Harry Redknapp in the week leading up to the FA cup final, so if he can carry on doing this who knows?

Once again I can only say that I do no think that he can be written off yet, as others have not been in the past - so he must get the same treatment. Many have said that John Utaka must offer more this season and they will wait until January to see what he offers before finally making up their mind on him, surely Nugent deserves the same sort of thing?

So, all that remains to be said is do you think that this 'will be the season' for Nugent? Thoughts as always guys...

Give the lad till January and see how he does. I'm sure hell have a bigger part to play this season anyhow. On a side note...am glad we didnt get spiderman http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_3773913,00.html

Nugent can talk all he likes. He will have a few chances to justify our faith & patience in him. If not, the glue factory in January.

I'd rather flog him now!!!

I like him so give him a fresh crack

I would be happy with Defoe, Nugent, Sahar, and Utaka(as a striker) as our line up. No need to sign or resign more strikers. A playmaker and wideman are needed most. We cannot score goals if no one is there to make them.

I have always thought we haven't really given Nugent a fair chance. However, didn't like this article where he says he is much fitter this season. Why the hell wasn't he fit last season? I know he was supposed to have a Hernia (or did have) but presumably he had that when he was playing and scoring for Preston. They don't just appear - do they?

One more season, with some good chances being given to him to show what he can do. Get some new boots to stop all the falling over just before he has a chance, and he will be alright! He has the pace, skill, strength and determination to make it at the highest level... now needs to start showing it. I think just one goal will help his confidence by a mile, and will be whacking the ball in the back of the net time and time again. So nugent..... get that one premier league goal, and off you go boy!

In other words, I'd rather sit and rot on the bench for loads of money then get packed off on loan to a Championship side!

hope he stays as he will be a benjani like. I feel he will score goals this season and as his fitness and apperances go up his goals will be flying in he just had a rough time will injuries last season and now he will proform. The first season is always the toughest.so give the lad a fresh start.

One more season he has to be given and maybe a full pre-season will help. I do hope he comes good.

I'm confident he'll come good. He joined pre-season late, he was stepping up from the championship and had this hernia issue, it's not a great combination really. My fear though is that he's lost his chance, when you sign for a club you get that chance initially to make an impression and if you dont take it you tend to struggle to get a decent run.

I have faith on Mr Nugget. Bang in a few goals for me lad!

Would like to see him succeed like everyone else here but can't help thinking that even if he does, it will be one more reason for Arry to ship him elsewhere (or perhaps several million reasons).

I think it's all been said really.. give him another chance and let's see if he really can crack it in the prem.. I really hope he can.

There would be little value in selling him now, in real terms if we wait till January we're not likely to lose much on the transfer fee he'd command now, but a few good performances could actually boost his value. That said i think given the chance he'll come good. As for Hernia's they can just appear without warning. Nugent looked a different player at the end of the season and i fully expect him to show how good he is this season with a full preseason behind him. if he's given the chance that is.
