'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Sahar joins Pompey

Another arrival has been confirmed with Ben Sahar completing his expected loan move to Pompey from Chelski to become our 2nd signing of the summer.

Sahar

The Israeli teenager has made an impact in the Championship after loans with QPR and Wednesday now he is hoping to make the grade in the top flight as he explained to the Pompey Site: 'I've always wanted to be part of a Premier League team and I'm happy to be at Portsmouth.

'I'm ready for the challenge of being part of such a big club.

'I want to be part of it and to show that I deserve to be here.'

He is also excited about the prospect of playing in front of the best fans in the world, which of course we are: 'I've heard a lot of good things about the fans.

'I've been here twice with Chelsea and the fans were incredible. It's difficult to play against Portsmouth because they are singing all the time.

'My goal is to play and I'm striker, so of course I want to score a few goals for Portsmouth - that's why I'm here.

'It's a new beginning and I'm ready for it.'

The 18 year old has joined on an initial 6 month loan deal, picking Fratton over several other alternatives, including Dutch club NEC.

I have only heard good things about his quality, and what I have seen has been good - although the one thing that does concern me is the fact that he is said to 'believe the hype' surrounding him, which might lead him to thinking he is actually bigger and better than he is and could see him react in a bad way if he cannot get regular 1st team football...

His signing will no doubt put further question marks over the future of Dave Nugent in particular, but I cannot see any reason why we cannot retain him as well - as after all this is only a loan to begin with.

My thinking is this puts further pressure on Kanu, as with Peter Crouch likely to sign - I fully believe this will happen, and maybe this week - if he does not agree to sign his new deal he could, and I would say under the circumstances should be shown the door!

So there we are guys, it's the 1st July so this should, as expected, really signal the start of things to come. As always your thoughts would be welcomed...

Excellent news! From what i've seen, he's quick, powerful' knows where the goals is and doesn't lack self belief. I think it spells the end for Nuge though!
pentonpompey
Straight in to the first team then?
UKTony
Wishing him all the best..........
captnTERRYfic
I think this is a strange one to be honest as surely Chelsea will have only loaned him on the basis of him playing, otherwise why bother? We will just have to wait and see.
sneakay
And! I wish I would tap the keys on the keyboard that I mean to!! Sorry for the drivel earlier.
pentonpompey
good one, he is a quality prospect
pulse
Is he to keep Nugent & Kanu on their toes or to replace 1 or both of them?
storagematt
The Jewish Chronicle got it right then. See the thread It's Friday - Chances of a Press Conference ..... perhaps? Where 007 said we had signed 'Sarah' lol.
eastneydave
im happy in a way with this one but not in another because i like sahar but his scoring record aint great but why is arry bringing in championship standard players wen we are in europe next year ? but who knows as i think this could be a surprise package with his speed and strength.
stfc ballboy
I can't keep up with it all. Only YESTERDAY Peter Storrie said he was going on holiday, Harry was on holiday and nothing was happening in the Premier league and nothing was happening at Portsmouth. I could go on and on - but I won't! Put me in a real bad mood yesterday. Still, welcome to Sahar!
Gandor
I'll welcome the bloke, but surely he will be a bit part player here as he was at Chelsea?
paultsmouth
Gandor - I think the deal was done last week as announced in the Jewish Chronicle but not confirmed for some reason until today.
eastneydave
i not hear of sahar before but looks good player on Da Wikipedia, l'enciclopedia libera i hope he play with Defoe well
Bellezza Biondi
Nice reminder about Mr Bond's Journal Dave.. you're right he did 'break the news'... Bellezza (welcome to Vital Pompey.. Italian ??) I think Sahar is a similar build to JD so it could be interesting to see if Harry Redknapp plays them together... although he might have actually been signed as a winger !!
Chix
tante grazie for welcome chix ciao to you also yes i am italiano i live in roma mio grandmother inglese and was live in portsmouth also long times away. winger ?
Bellezza Biondi
winger is a wide man Bellezza, prepare to hear all about wing-half and inside-forwards!
paultsmouth
We are short in the striking department (and I'm not referring to Defoe) apart from him we only have Nuge and Kanu, we really need a couple more strikers, and desperately need one at least. I don't think it spells the end for Nuge but means he must be on his toes (and stay on his feet in front of goal). This has to be a good signing.
tracyc
Loan is good business as we swell the squad for upcoming campaign. he's there, good luck to him
PortsMorsch
good signing, quality player who will add something else to the squad - hopefully if it came to a straight decision between losing nugent or kanu, altho kanu has been there and done it he would be the one i would let go, and 'when' we get crouchy unless kanu changes his demands he will bo off... anyway, back to sahar, decent signing and another player to add to the squad - things are starting to move on.
pompeyrug
I can't see why any team signs a player on a 6 month loan unless they have the option to purchase the player at a pre determined price at the end of the loan period. This was the case with both Aubey and Baros who we had the option to buy. If Sahar is any good and does well at Pompey, Chelsea will either want him back or up the asking price. All we do is groom a player for them and save them the bother or risk. Bad business imo and smells like a money saving move by Pompey to have a player when you don't really have a player at all.
frattonaussie
if there is an option to buy - or extend - then this will be agreed already, the price cannot be raised if he does well can it - this will be fixed, besides by the time the loan ends the transfer window will be open again anyway... at the same time you can say that if it doesn't work out at least we only have him until january, and not a whole season!
so all in all i dont see it as bad business, it would have been worse business to cut our nose off to spite our face and not got anyone at all...
pompeyrug
Quality.
NinjaTim
Nice one word answer Tim.

The 6 month loan as well might well see us through both the UEFA Cup and Carling Cup Campaign if things don't go well for us, in which case we could let him go as surplus to requirement. It seems to me a cheap option to bulster the squad. More money left for other players that way.
sneakay
a dnt understand thistransfer at all, he wonr be a 1st team rgular
kendog
its all part of building a bigger squad mate...
a theory that i have - most probably way off the mark - is that maybe sahar is also acting as a 'sweetener' from chelski? we take him on loan and give him some 1st team football at the highest level and in return we get 1st option on SWP?
pompeyrug
SAHAR JOINS POMPEY PIPELINE
pompeygray
Im hoping you're right Rug Re Chelski sweetner and SWP. Saying that I do have a good feeling about that one.
