'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Shorey next up for Pompey?

'Links' with Nicky Shorey have been growing recently, and now Harry Redknapp has admitted a liking for the Reading left back.

It as the usually Redknapp talk, the 'I like him' speech, with him saying: 'Shorey is a player I like. He's a good player and a good footballer. We're looking for players who would give us something a bit different, and he would do that.

'He would give us something different to Hermann. Having said that, Hermann did a fantastic job for us and was brilliant for me.

'But we are going to need a squad and we are going to need cover. We are going to be playing more games than ever next season and it's going to be a lot tougher for us.'

I would welcome the signing myself to be honest and Shorey has made it clear that he wants to leave Reading, so with him only having year on his contract he could be signed for around 3m, which I do not think is bad at all.

Could he become the second player to arrive from Reading, would we even want this? Thoughts please guys...

Although Harry may like him I can't see him coming to us to be a squad player. I think he will more likely move to a club wherethey will give him regular first team action. I don't see him replacing Herman in that first team spot.

I take your point seakey but Noe kept HH out because Noe was very good there. If Shorey is good enough he'll keep HH out. If Shorey wants to get back to playing for England he can't expect an easy ride with a guaranteed place each week.
storagematt
I firmly believe that left backs must n=be left footed and Noe is not (despite his screamer at Newcastle). Hermann is pushing 34 too. Would be a good signing.
eastneydave
Is that a must be Dave or a musn't? Although Noe is right footed which answers my own question :)
sneakay
Yes, should be a purchase and I hope he signs. HH is not an ideal LB and I think Shorey could give us that little bit of an attacking option down the left hand side.
bluedr
Was very impressed with Shorey when I saw him play for England, got to be worth a shout.
Tantona
Dave, totally agree your left footed point. Who is left or two footed in the Pompey camp regarding this position?
007
fink we should leave this 1 a good player but i dont fink he would settle in
stfc ballboy
He would be a good addition, but no player is garuanteed a starting spot I feel Harry will rotate the older players especially with Europe in mind.

I'd be happy with shorey in the squad. though if we get everyone were linked with we'll have half an england team. jamo, johnson, SWP, defoe, crouchie, shorey
SUAC51
I'm a little disappointed with Harry Redknapp constantly name dropping to unsettle other teams players, not cool at all
Phartman87
the way that this is reported sounds like he's already pushing HH out the door. Doesn't sound like the great man-management that HR is meant to possess
hammersmithblue
THERE IS ONLY ONE HERMANN!!! This is blasphemy!
PortsMorsch
Apparently we have signed an 18 year old european midfielder. I would think this is one for the academy with an eye to the 2010 season although I believe we paid a fair price for him.
frattonaussie
thats good if we have got a youngster in. and shorey is a good player, would do a great job for us, but if we could get wayne bridge instead (yes i do want the scummer), then that would be better. shorey is a good player, but im not sure whether he has the qualitys needed to move this club on.

What has happened to Martin Cranie .. Not seen, heard of or spoken about much these days.... Wasn't he bought to fill this position ??
