Talking Pompey with storagematt

Talking Pompey with storagematt

Vital Pompey has previously brought you the 'knowing me knowing you series' - which is still running, so others will be added and if you want to do one just email - now we have a little something extra this summer...

storagematt was asked 5 quick questions, this is what they said.

  • What are you expecting from Pompey in the coming season?
After our highest league placing for 50+ years & winning the FA Cup for our greatest Pompey moment. Next season could be a bit of an anti-climax. I hope for a good season where we can still challenge for a top ten position. After decades in the lower leagues, we can't get carried away & presume we are entitled to anything. Fighting on many fronts especially the UEFA Cup, may take its toll on our league form & we should be patient with the team. We have come a very long way in a short space of time & consolidation amongst the big boys would be great.

  • Uefa cup - are you a fan of us being in this, or are you against it? Either way how well do you reckon we can do?
I can't wait to mix it with European boys. I just hope we get past 'our 1st round' match & have a good go in the group stage & see where it takes us. There are quite a few games to be played even before the quarter finals loom in. We will be up against a lot of teams with a lot of European experience, irrespective of their country of origin. We have to safe guard against naivety & foreign refs who might see things a bit different to us. My fear is the trouble from the local police & the opposition's fans on the away trips.

  • Which 3 players - that we could realistically sign - would you like to see arrive this summer?
Where to start. We have been linked with so many & it's great that our current status & finances allows to do so. Up front we need someone with Defoe. Peter Crouch or Eidur Gudjohnson up front. SWP wide right. Shorey or Bridge at left back. (I know that is 5 but you know what I mean). I trust the club will get it right & we'll get what we want if we can. We must keep improving & can't afford to stand still.

  • If you had to select 1 player to get shot of - or maybe to rephrase or make this decision easier, 'sacrifice' - to make a signing who would it be and why?
I think we need to retain as many as possible as we will need a quality squad more than ever before. I was disappointed with Nugent, Diop & Utaka, especially as they all promised so much. They may get better next season, they may not. But if I had to push one out it would be Utaka, he may still hold a high price abroad if Harry wanted to sell.

  • How many Pompey games do you expect to make this season?
Having had a season ticket for the last 17 seasons, I am very fortunate to be able to get to go to nearly every home game. I hope that remains the same for the next instalment. Away games are a lot harder, with work & family commitments, so if I'm lucky maybe I'll get one in but there is more probability in getting to some of the European games.

Thanks to storagematt for answering these.

Another good and realistic response to the questions poised. I'm glad as MAtt says we are not getting carried away and expecting to automaticall improve in every aspect just because we won the FA Cup. We are all going to have to be patient next year and maybe accept a season with not as many highs... Consistency is now the key.. push on for sure but gain strength must be the ultimate objective

Well said Matt and followed up Chix. Let's just hope that a number of the fans feel the same and don't just come to the games expecting us to win everyone of them. With that attitude the crowd will be quiet and vey 'unPompeyish'.

We have picked up support in recent years that has only seen prem football. They don't remember the dark days. If clubs like Spurs, Newcastle, Man City have off seasons, so can we. As long as we maintain our prem status, everything else is a bonus. I'll only start to panic, when Harry retires & we can't replace David James etc.

The Dark days Matt now all Pompey fans SHOULD remember them. Otherwise they will expect too much. Nice replies and consolidation is the key word too.

The theme for all at the moment seems to be restraint. That's good; it's needed. Lets all enjoy and the moment that is being 2008 Cup winners! Glad you too think the same of Utaka, 8mil....Ummm? Shorey or Bridge, i'm with you on those two.

Trouble is, pompeym@ - nobody can remember the last time he could be bothered to play! I bet he bothered to pick up his wages tho.

Match highlights - Pompey 0-1 Orient

Disappointing as it was, you take the rough with the smooth and cannot gloss over things when they aren't so good so here goes with the 1-0 defeat Pompey suffered against Orient.

    Simply not good enough!

Call me a moaner, call me a groaner but if you think the performance against Orient was good enough then I think you're wearing blue tinted specs as that was poor from Pompey.
