Crouch bid rejected?

The Daily Mail Online is reporting that we have had an offer for Peter Crouch rejected by Liverpool...

If true, this would explain why Harry Redknapp had today said that a deal might not happen as much as he wanted it too as Liverpool were 'asking too much' for the England man.

The report says that we 'wanted to pay £7m up front with the rest in extras' - with these extras seeing the final fee rise to a 'reported' £9m.

As we all know Crouch is out of contract next summer, so would be able to arrange a free transfer for that summer in January, or move on right away with the price likely to drop dramatically - but that could be a risky game to play, so if we, or anyone else want him it needs to be now really...

It is no secret that I want him to come back to Fratton, but at the end of the day we have to stick by our guns - if we do not want to pay anymore than x amount, we will not will we.

Although I reckon a straight up offer of £8.5m or thereabout could well do the trick...

Thoughts as ever guys - if we have seen this offer rejected do you think we will improve it or is this deal now dead?

It'll be interesting to see what happens and in some respects it'll depend on how much (if any) he feature in Liverpools plan for next season and who else is interested. If this is an opening gambit then I think we'll end up getting him for say 8m up front, but if it's a take it or leave it then I reckon its a dead duck

I really would like to see it happen. There's still a long way to go and I think Liverpool are waiting to see if there are other offers. I would rate him at 10 mill. We are an attractive club at the moment and if we are ever going to get strikers like Crouch now is the time. Defoe is a classy player but a blind man could see how effective Crouch could be for any team in the Prem.

Strange that the Daily Mail is reporting that Liverpool rejected a bid for Crouch, the Liverpool Echo says that there has been no contact between Liverpool and Portsmouth over him, wither it's formal or otherwise.

I hopeful we will get him if the player himself wants to come.

Harry is currently a real dogs testicles manager and I feel that most people would want to play for him. Crouchie has done so twice already so, as long as things went well then, and I think Crouchie has a lot to thank Hal for, I think he would see a move to 'Three England Players already' Pompey as ideal. I hope the deals not dead I really want him at Fratton. A bit of heading practice and we have a 35 goals per season partnership.

We'll get him for 8m. at the end of the day Liverpool want Silva to partner Torres up front and apparenately they have got 20m to spend, plus whatever funds they get from selling. Got 4m for Rise and thats it so far. They will definately sell Crouch as they clearly don't want him, and although they want more there aren't that many teams banging the door down for him. Of course plenty would like him, but not that many are prepared to put the money where the mouth is. Think we are and thats why Harry will get his man. Friday press conference looming??

I have never been sure that Harry really wants Crouch. I still suspect that Crouch is being used as a pawn in a move to secure someone else this transfer period and then go after him in January or next season. Crouch just strikes me as being too similar to Kanu and as it seems Kanu will re sign it will still leave us with limited changes to the style of play if necessary. Next season Kanu won't be with us imo so then Crouch will become a viable asset for us.

The Echo are now running the "offer rejected" story. Perhaps the fat lady has sung?

Liverpool are obviously wanting to try and recoup some of the money that Villa are grinding out of them for Barry.

It almost feels to me as though Harry and Peter are trying to exact revenge on L'pool for valuing Crouch at 15m. Yes, that was a massively inflated price, but if they had priced him at 10m, few would have argued. So with that in mind, it seems petty to me to try to mess around with deals well under that. A flat 9m offer seems reasonable, but to offer 7m plus extras seems a bit daft because as others have said, you can easily get burned playing that game. If we're not prepared to get close to 10m up front, we might as well move on. Unless, of course, Crouch isn't the first choice striker we've all been thinking he was. Maybe they're just trying to get a second choice deal on the cheap while they pursue a first choice striker we're not expecting.

The guy is a top striker and well worth 10M. Harry is just playing games if he thinks that 7M upfront with add ons is good enough. Bent went for 16M. Andy Johnson for 8.5M. Crouch has a good record at both Liverpool and England is a fair price is 10M in my opinion! Congrats on a good season as well....Looking forward to a visit to your place this year.

I agree with Philtaglia. Before Liverpool wanted 15mil we were reading in the paper all the time that Harry would pay 10mil for Crouch. NOW

Pardon me - something just happened to my PC. Anyway - NOW they only want to to pay 7mil with add ons. I must admit I was exasperated when I heard what we had offered. Don't say we are going to miss Crouch for the sake of 1mil?

the difference with crouchy and those other players is they werent in the final year of their contracts... crouchy is every inch the player they are and more but benitez has to be careful or he'll end up getting little or nothing for him!
that said i still reckon he will sign...
