Quarter finals time at Euro 2008 meant that Pompey's last representative was in action, but could he inspire Croatia to the last 4...
Having been rested for the final group game Niko Kranjcar returned for Croatia's quarter final against Turkey on Friday and after Ivica Olic somehow managed to hit the bar Kranjcar missed the follow up with his header, which in fairness was far from straightforward.
The game was pretty poor to be honest, but Croatia looked the team most likely to win it in 90 minutes, sadly Kranjcar - who was admittedly not that prominent in the game - came off before the end due to a tactical move.
0-0 at full time, then 0-0 until the dying minutes of injury time then Croatia struck, Kranjcar would be back to fight another day surely, but no Turkey and their 'never say die attitude' amazingly saw them equalise with the last kick of the game to send it to penalties. At this point you always knew, well I did anyway, that there would be only one winner - Turkey. And so it proved as the Croats put 2 penalties wide and had a 3rd saved.
So Croatia, my tip to win Euro 2008, are no more - there goes my payout! Kranjcar can now go on a break before reporting for pre-season training and a Pompey interest in Euro 2008 is over, at least in terms of current Pompey players, maybe there could still be some future players on display, but I would doubt it...
I cannot wrap up the Croatia talk without a note on Luka Modric though - Spurs look like they have signed one hell of a player!
Surely we cannot have another 'Greece' on our hands with Turkey? Granted they have never given up but they have rarely gone out looking to win games so far. In all honesty I do not want Turkey or Germany to win the tournament, but as they meet in the semi final from a footballing point of view Germany to this point would deserve it more.
I was 'Croatian' but I think I will now become 'Dutch' or 'Russia' as I have this feeling that the winner of that game tonight could well go all the way, and I also have this other feeling that it may well be a case of 'you sneaky Russians'...
