Glen Little Pompey's first summer signing

Peter Crouch, Shawn Wright-Phillips, Nicky Shorey - all names that were mentioned as players likely to sign anytime soon but Glen Little has beaten them all by this afternoon being confirmed as our first signing of the summer.

He has arrived on a free from Reading and has signed a 1 year contract.

To be honest to say that I am surprised by the signing of the 32 year old winger would be an understatement, as not being funny he does not seem to fit the bill of what had been suggested does he.

That said his being absent for virtually the whole of last season was seen by many Reading fans as having a major impact on their season, which ultimately ended in their relegation from the premier league.

This signing reminds me of the David Thompson signing from a couple of years back in many ways. Like he did, he certainly adds experience and extra cover - something we have very much lacked in wide areas - but I would be surprised if he became a regular.

So there we have it guys, if anyone can honestly say that Little would have been a player they thought we would have signed today, if at all, I would be even more surprised.

Not the player we expected, but a decent squad addition however...

Yep. A bit gobsmacked. He add to the squad, Utaka ain't gonna play all the time. We do lack width but I thought SWP would do that? In HR we trust.

hopefully he is one of the 2 'other' not one of the 3 'quality' :-)
in all seriousness he is a decent footballer, surprised by his signing big time but he increases the numbers which will help and he can score goals and create them too. reading missed him last season, hopefully he can go the job that is asked - which i am sure he will.

I'm absolutely devaststaded. Had he been fit last season, we would have stayed up, simple as that. I feel a bit sick that he'll almost definitely be a back-up player at pompey, whereas we despearately need his creativity to help us get back up. He is a quality player, maybe not what you lot should are looking for but quality none the less. Good luck to him, hope he makes an impact. But if you hurt him, I swear to god... Good bye Glen, I love you...

yep, as said in the surprised but by no means disgusted with this signing - he is a good footballer who will offer us something, and maybe even give utaka the boot up the arse that he needs! altho i still reckon SWP could sign and crouch is an near cert...

He's not getting any younger. Thats a very surprising signing, I thought with Europe on the horizon you would have been buying better quality.

No bad for a freebie. Cant see us signing Solano anymore now, not with SWP on the horizon anyway.

Yep; surprised; didn't see him feature in anyone's "Harry for a day". Let's hope he is in addition to the well touted names and not instead of one of them

This looks like a good piece of business to me. Thompson was 3 to 4 seasons past his prime when we took him. I admit it's not sexy football but I like to see that Harry is still looking at all options to improve squad not just big name players or 15 year old wonder-kids

Agree with Kinn, Solano a no no now. Good player Glen Little - scored the winner in the Irsih Cup Final for Glentoran in 96!!. A squad player with experience which obvious;y HR is looking for.

sorri but i disagree why sign a championship standard player ? 32 years old ? cant believe we have got him i would rather have solano little is rubbish he could not evn make it in the reading starting line up.Sorri but i totally disagree.all he is gunna do is add squad player

Harry's no fool. The Royals fans know that his injury last year was one of the reasons they struggled as an attacking side. Note he's 6ft 3ins - once again fits Harry's brief for taller guys. We need a far bigger squad so this deal makes sense and within likley budget.

stfc ballboy - You're either a wind-up merchant or a moron. I'm guessing the latter. The only reason Little couldn't make it intot the team was cos he was injured. He absolutely rinsed premier league defenders in our first season, that includes the likes of Evra and Clichy. I think he'll be an excellent squad player for you guys and I hope you get to see some glimpses of his brilliance so you can appreciate him like we do! ps. Thats the third one of our decent players that you lot have robbed on a free now!!

Don't know much about him, but have learned to trust Arry over the years. Judging by uroyal's reaction, he must be a good signing. So he's called Little and he's 6'3" - what's he known as 'Tiny'?

I think the bloke is quality, when we were crap a few short years ago, I remember him playing against us with Burnley at Fratton, he is a Chris Waddle style player, about 6' 2" and deceptively quicker than he looks, he will be one of the tallest wingers we have had, for anyone struggling to recall him, he came on as a sub for Reading I think it was 2 years ago, and nearly stole the show

I was shocked to say the least when Rug told me of this, but having had time to digest the news, I'm quite pleased about it. A very decent player on his day, who'll cause the opposition a few problems. Potentially a very crafty signing.

Umm I'm not sure... a 32 year old freebie to give a 6million pound misfit a kick up the jacksy... I'll trust in Harry as we always do but to be honest I'm gonna be one of those who is gonna take some convincing ... On the Chris Waddle thread, it was Waddle who dropped him at Burnley during his spell as the Clarets' manager. Waddle's assistant at the time (Glenn Roeder) commented that Little 'wasn't fit to lace Waddle's boots' We'll see....

glen little is a quality player, or at least he was readings best player in their championship season. as everyone has said, reading have missed little, but tbh i cant see him playing more than 10 games, he seems to be a bit of a kanu.

Fair shout about Hermann Rug.. but the hype around Little seems to be how he helped Reading out of the championship... Well Toddy did that for us but would we be excited about getting a player with his injury record now..all a bit familiar me thinks.. ... Bit part player as Bakes says I reckon... but if he's wearing the blue I'll get behind the fella.

I don't know much about him but he was not even a maybe chance on my transfer list. I hope Harry pulls another rabbit with this one and he turns out a good player. On face value Solano would have been a better option.

We finally have a natural winger who can cross the ball for Defoe and Crouch to score. I'll have him on a freebie!

The guy has skill on the ball - its worth checking out YouTube for a 2 min Burnley video of Little's goals in the Championship. He's no mug and on 1 year contract he could be one of Harry's 'Bargain Buys'. Look what Steve Stone did in his 2 years in the Prem - was I the only one who thought we could have done with a player like Stoney down the right last season if only for his experience and nous?
