Pompey are looking like following the likes of Arsenal and Manyoo by setting up an official link-up with a Belgian club side. The side we are looking to forge and alliance with is Zulte Waregem.
As some of you that are regulars to Vital Pompey might already know this is something a couple of Zulte supporters had already spoken about in the forum some weeks back, with a discussion taking place on its merits in between. To see this thread click here.
Its is hoped that Pompey will be able to send youngsters to Zulte so they can continue their development over in Belgium and gain some 1st team experience, which I think is a good idea as it gives them a look at things in a different culture, broadens their horizons and to a degree prepares them for European football.
We will also be able to increase our scouting network across Europe, which should enable us the possibility of unearthing even more young talent, which can then be added to the growing collection we already have. Also this link-up 'should' be something that can enable Pompey to ensure talented players are secured, with them able to reside with Zulte whilst necessary European residence status is earned.
Clearly it is not only to Pompey's benefit, Zulte also benefit or this would not happen. They will of course be gaining access to our talented youngsters - granted in the long run we are the potential winners - as well as our 'expertise on technical, medical and logistical levels'.
We are in a win - win situation surely? We get first dibs on their emerging talent, they can give ours some 1st team experience and can act as a feeder club to gain those that might not have the necessary paperwork/status a place to earn it.
This has worked for Arsenal with Beveren and Manyoo with Antwerp so I see no reason why over the next 3 years, which is thought to be the initial length of the agreement, this cannot work for us too...
