'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Diarra staying/Zarate no go/Nuge off...all again!

Once again it is a day for the same old same old really...

Lassana Diarra has once again reiterated his desire to remain with Pompey again next season, with Citeh, who have shown an interest viewed as 'a backwards step' - so he is not going there.

The News is reporting that he would only be willing to leave Fratton for anyone of what he sees as 'the four biggest in the world - Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea.'

We are a club with ambition, a club that matches his own so why would or should he leave unless it is for a club that is a significant move forward...

==========

Mauro Zarate has once again been 'linked' with Pompey this week, with it claimed that a season long loan deal had been agreed with his Qatari side Al-Sadd.

Having denied an interest when it was previously claimed we were going one step further and actually signing him Peter Storrie has again denied the latest claims, telling The News: 'Mauro Zarate is signing? That's an interesting one.

'When did I do that one then? I can't remember doing it!

'I think we have been linked with 38 different players. It's just silly season.'

Quite why the links to the Argentinean keep resurfacing is anybodies guess - some would say there is no smoke without fire...

==========

And finally, earlier in the week it was Sean Davis that was off to Birmingham, this time it is Dave Nugent that is going to the Brummies.

Having sold Fabrice Muamba to Bolton this week the paper claims are that Alex McLeish wants to spend a chunk on that to sign Nugent...

Nugent has himself said that 'he will not be forced out of the club', but all the talk is he is not shot of admirers with Sunderland and Stoke both interested too.

As always I say that I would like him to stay, but should he go then you would hope it would be to our benefit and someone 'better' would come in to replace him, but we will see eh...

I hope Diarra did some scouting whilst he was bench warming. Any good pubs & hotels incase we get Swiss/Austrian teams in the UEFA Cup. Nugent has 6 months to prove himself or he'll go in January sales!

What we want is something concrete - but it seems as though the Crouch deal is imminent.

The whole transfer market is waitng for the Euros to finish. One or 2 deals will start n avalanche, especially when Scolari starts at Chelsea...Really want to see Pompey's transfers done in the next 2weeks...Wanted us to go for Poborski before the euros -probably cost too much now..hopefully Big Phil will dump SWP & we get him on the cheap

Sorry, i meant Podolski...

Many player contracts run through until 1st July, this is when we will see movement. Crouchy does seem to happen soon which will be great!

yellowcheesemonkey... podolski would not move to pompey

I would like us to get Crouch and Dunne in the bag now. I can't say I'm bothered about SWP.
Gandor
It still seems pointless to me to sell Nugent. As it stands, we need at least one more striker, with Baros leaving and Kanu not having the energy to play a full 90 minutes, so if we sell Nugent, we need at least two more strikers. Unless we can get close to the price we paid for him ( which seems unlikely ) we'd struggle to find a decent replacement. ( I think the prices mentioned in the papers for Gudjohnsen have been underestimated ) We've suffered in the past for selling for the sake of selling, and I'd rather hoped we had learned from our mistakes.

I agree the Crouch deal is imminent. I think SWP would fit in great, and Dunne would make great defensive cover that we really need. But I'm getting used to rumours, some of them are true, most of them aren't and then signings we didn't expect happen out of the blue. It will be nice when the merry-go-round finally gets cranked up and it all starts though. As for Nuge, I think if they get a good offer, Arry will want to sell him, so it could be an interesting battle of wills. I hope he stays myself, but do agree that if he doesn't start to shine by January then he'll have had his chance. Perhaps he needs to try wearing boots with studs on.

Diarra will stay at least one more season, personally I would hope longer but we will see, if he keeps playing & we are succesful maybe he will.

It all depends who comes in for him I think. If its one of those 4 sides he named, then he would go. But not to the likes of Citeh or Spuds. In the meantime, we just have to enjoy having a player of that kind of class, who wants to be at Pompey. Happy Days.

I was out and about the other night and heard people talking about the Pompey team. I was a bit rattled to hear that they were saying that the team were a bunch of prima donnas playing their own game and did not play as a team. Do you think that Diarra is so much better than the rest of them that this could be so in his case? Or are we thinking that he plays really well with Mendes and not the usual midfielders?
Gandor
I don't think they are a bunch of prima donnas but I have said before that they are not playing as a team for most of the time. When they do they are first class. I have querried before as to whether or not they train as 3 sections ie, fullbacks, midfielders and strikers; and forget to train as a complete team.
frattonaussie
Gandor, Mendes certainly brings the best out of Diarra. The prima donna comment I think relates to certain players and their inconsistency and lack of effort. In the worst scenario this could infect other players in the long term.
007
Frattonaussie, I agree with you. But I can't help thinking that something went wrong after the Africans came back from their national games. Because after that we didn't really seem to play that well - at least at home - I didn't see any away matches. The coming of Diarra and Defoe - both brilliant players - seems to have unsettled things. Although both are good players, neither seems to have slotted in (except Diarra in the last match with Mendes). Someone said earlier this season (in this forum) that they would have liked to have seen Benji play with Defoe - I thought they might have had something there. Harry certainly has his work cut out in the coming season. He will be juggling a lot more players in a lot more games.
Gandor
True Gandor Juggling is the word for it ... but there are certain players who Harry will consider wothy of a place in the starting x1 not matter what .... hang on just thought of a good idea for a forum thread..
Chix
Gandor, I think one of the problems Harry had when the Africans came back was that Harry plays his style of football. Each national team plays its own style and they are all different from Harry's style so they took a few weeks to get it back together. On top of that Defoe and Diarra arrived so there was more confusion on styles of play so it all added up tp a bit of a mess. Something that had a lid kept on it and was not reported, was the off pitch behaviour of some of the players whilst in Africa. Late nights and parties were not uncommon. This could have had an effect as well. I have friends in Ghana and the reports on the parties came back from them.
frattonaussie
The point about them playing seeming to play as 3 separate teams at times last season is bang on. There was a frustrating lack of fluidity. We've had quite a turnover in the last couple of seasons however, and the switch in tactics to accomodate Defoe didn't help either. It's going to take some time to gel. I reckon that we need a more aggressive left back (wing back) and a connecting midfielder with world class passing ability to help the transition from defence to forward (Vieira maybe).
Toronto4Pompey
Also can't see the point in getting rid of Nugent, unless we'd kept Baros. Give him til January at least.
