'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Storrie - we know the players we want

Peter Storrie insists that the club know who they are after, and despite all the speculation linking us with this, that and the other these thoughts have not changed.

He acknowledged once again that the squad needs reinforcing, and it will do as without this we will just 'stand still' - and we cannot be doing this. This is what he told the Pompey Site: 'the squad is already strong, but we want to add to it because we could be playing more than 50 games next season.

'We've been linked with more than 40 names since the end of the season, which is quite incredible. I got a letter from one fan recommending 15 names, which would have meant spending about £200m!

'But we know our targets. We know exactly the positions and names we want.

'We're working on things, but June is a notoriously quiet time in football, with people away on vacation, so I can't see too many transfers being done in the next couple of weeks.'

Add the uefa cup to the league schedule and hopefully extended runs in the FA and league cups and we 'could' be looking at well over 50 games, with as many as 15 being played in the uefa cup alone - so with this in mind on its own Storrie was keen to stress what this would mean, and highlight why we had not entered the intertwobob cup a year earlier: 'the UEFA Cup means strengthening the squad because if we progress we'll be regularly playing UEFA Cup games on a Thursday and Premier League games on the Sunday.

'Being involved is obviously going to change our season because of the number of games.

'It's all new to us, and it's important we get the balance right. But I'm sure we can do it very successfully.

'People wondered why we opted not to play in the Intertoto Cup last season, but it's so early, it affects the start of your league campaign. That's why we were against playing in it.'

Our participation in the uefa cup of course means we get a bye into the 3rd round of the league cup - so we go into that one step closer to glory already!

==========

Two players that 'we know who we do not want' are Marcelo Mattos and Lee Naylor according to Harry Redknapp.

He has dismissed reports 'strongly linking' us with the pair, saying he was not looking at Mattos and although he had checked out Naylor in the past he was not looking to him now.

Just becaause he says this it does not of course make it completely true though does it...

Some people are concerned that no deals have been done yet, but we will get them done. It would have been nice to have gotten them out the way early but this is not usually the way the summer transfer window works is it, but by the time pre-season comes around I reckon we will have a fair few of these deals sorted, or at least close to completion...

Well, let's hope we get what we want & as importantly keep the star players we want.

So very few league games on a Saturday then; the price of success I suppose

Traditional family Sunday roast out of the window!

I had not thought of that downside Matt, I love my Sunday roast.

I like the part about the fan sending him a list of 15 names to sign in the summer....comedy genius....and he was probably serious too. It wouldn't surprise me in the slighest if he was also one of the forty people who applied for the Blackburn job, citing the fact that he's extremely good at Football Manager 2008!

It is desperately quiet at the moment - English players are on holiday (or maybe in Italy at some wedding) everyone else including HR and all the other managers are at the Euros. I think there is haggling going on over Crouch though, perhaps we'll hear something soon. Also Gudjohnson is apparently friends with Jamie Redknapp, so that should help!

Yes, I read a Newcastle report linked off of newsnow bemoaning the fact that Eidur is Jamies' mate.....!

Was it really 15 names i put in the letter???
pentonpompey
that is where both you and storrie are wrong penton, as it was 'only' 10 names, and 'only' £100m - was i really asking that much :-)
