Cisse keen to play for Pompey

The lure of playing for Harry Redknapp and the fact that we can offer uefa cup football next season makes Pompey an attractive proposition to Djibril Cisse...

Well, that is according to his agent Ranko Stojic: 'we've had some very interesting offers from Spain but he is very, very motivated to play in the Premier League again.

'He wants to play for a club with ambition and Portsmouth are a club with ambition.

'There has been no contact from Portsmouth or anyone else yet, but we expect to see who is serious this week.

'Portsmouth were interested in Djibril last season and so were Manchester City and West Ham.

'That was then, though, and this is now.

Just because we were interested in January it does not mean that we are now does it, so that is the key part of what Stojic said. He did go on to talk about the respect that they have for Redknapp and how much he would like to play for him: 'I know about Portsmouth and have spoken with Harry in the past.

'He is a top coach and someone Djibril would be keen to play for.

'Portsmouth are an ambitious club and Djibril wants to play for an ambitious club.

'There are maybe three or four teams like Portsmouth and Tottenham who he would play for.

'He wants to play at the highest level and have European football. The Champions League would be good, but so would a team in the UEFA Cup now with ambitions of playing in the Champions League.'

We do tick all the boxes for what he wants, but does he us? The major downside for me though is the fact that Marseille are looking for a reported 9m, and with Peter Crouch believed to be available at 10m I think the England man would win this battle...

Whatever happens though, the fact that players want to play for us now - even if it only agents touting their clients as can be the case - it proves how far we have moved forward.

Sounds very much like Cisse's agent is simply trying to start off a bidding war....good player, but is he worth the risk at that kind of asking price?

It may suit the player & his agent than it would suit us. I'd still rather have Crouch.

19 goals is a nice amount, but he was never really on fire in the Premiership. It does sound like his agent just trying to get things going.

Apparently Shaun Wright Phillips is a friend of Cisse. Perhaps we should wait and see if there's a chance of signing him before we make it too clear that we don't want Djibril.

i am sorry to say this but i would much prefer cisse to crouch. Cisse scores more and has more pace and can take it round players.Crouch scores but not enough he has no pace and cant take it round players !! Aslo heard gudjohnson is coming ??

stfc, I agree 100%, give me Cisse every time. A more complete footballer than Crouch can ever be. Defoe and Cisse with their pace and skill, WOW.

I think it is refreshing that players seem to want to come to us now and that we can pick and choose. I hate to admit it but I did rather take it personally last year when players chose other teams5trather than ours. It still sticks in my craw that a player chose Fulham rather than uslast year, saying he thought they had a better chance of success than us.............! Why are we saying Cisse is a trouble maker?

Crouch would be better with Defoe but Cisse is probably better if he is the lone striker. Overall I'd sooner we got both but that would be unlikely so I'd opt for Crouch and Heskey to go with Defoe and give us flexibility.

Heskey ??? I just cant see the sense in that move (Not having a go at you FA) but have seen it in the papers and I just can't see that he'll offer us anything.. THree years ago maybe not not now .. not for a team 'on the up' or are we in the same class as Birmingham & Wigan ..his last two clubs .... Cisse for me .. but even then I not convinced he's the quality we are looking for either...

cisse a more complete footballer than crouch ever will be? surely not? cisse has some qualities that crouchy doesnt, but he also has qualities that cisse doesnt so its swings and roundabouts but overall when the chips are down who would you rather have in your team a stoppy frenchman who 'might' disrupt the dressing room or an englishman that will be prepared to fight and battle - qualities that many of us keep banging on about 'no having enough of'...

In my opinion either Cisse or Crouch would be viable. On the face of it Cisse is the more complete footballer when compared to Crouch but in terms of playing alongside Defoe, either would be an exciting prspect. Sure, Crouch lacks pace but they said that about Sherringham. Surely it's about the blend of the team? True, Cisse could be a trouble-maker but then look how Harry tamed Di Canio and got the best out of him when no-one would touch him. So, there you have it, I'm sitting on the fence! Apart from the issue of Heskey that is......Forget it. He is well past his best now and is increasingly injury-prone. I agree with Chix, do we see ourselves as pushing for top six or even top four or are we scrapping with the likes of Wigan etc? Rug, by the way, everyone goes on about Englishmen who fight and battle or who have passion and I agree that all those qualities are utterly essential but let's combine those qualities with technique please. Remember England under Keegan and his chest-beating plea for more heart and passion? It was not only the heart and passion that was missing but also the skill and technique. Call me fussy but I want both the SKILL and the WILL in all players. Oh, and talking of stroppy Frenchmen, anyone for Henry?

Rug, Heskey would offer more than Baros and be cheaper. We can't afford to pay 9 million for someone to sit on the bench so we have to look at a cheaper option who will do a job for us when required. I think Heskey will fit the bill. I'd love to have 25 really classy players but then I have to be realistic.

Re Crouch being a little tardy, wasn't it Clough who said don't worry about the speed of the players... it's the ball that needs to be quick ..

Spot on Chris as kids we were told the ball travels faster than any players. Forget Heskey Wigan sent back Bent saying he's not the sort of player they want to play with Heskey. So it looks like they want to keep him. I'd like to see Crouch myself,& now Gudjohnson has been linked again today, saying as he is friendly with the Redknapp's puts us at the front of prem que
