Pompey at Euro 2008 update #1

Well the first round of group games involving current Pompey players performing at Euro 2008 have been played with 2 out of 3 playing, the 3rd was an unused sub - but all 3 nations that they represent are yet to taste defeat.

Milan Baros, although technically now a Lyon player once again - having returned to the French side without a deal yet being agreed, was unable to take to the field as his Czech Republic side kicked off the tournament against co-hosts Switzerland with a 1-0 win on Saturday.

Sunday saw Niko Kranjcar start for Croatia, playing an hour of their 1-0 win over the other host nation Austria.

Finally today, in what was probably one of the worst games in European Championship history Lassana Diarra was unable to get onto the field as the French played out a 0-0 draw with Romania - he was probably struggling to stay awake in all honesty...

If I were Harry Redknapp, if we could afford it, I would be trying to find out the agents details for a fair few of the players on display in the Holland against Italy game, as there were some outstanding displays in the game of the tournament so far - was it sneakay who had said this would be the case?

I dont know why people predicted an Italy win! haha. Had £10 on Holland (Draw No Bet) @ odds of 2.15!! Easy pickings! (For those interested in my picks go to whitecobra.blogabet.com.) I am amazed France didnt beat Romania - I think Domenech is a complete wa**er! France are the eternal flop artists now - they cocked up what was it 4 years ago? That was a must win game for them! No distin, no diarra .... malouda, abidal???? wtf! not that i care now, france should crash and burn! I think Czech and Croatia will finish 2nd in each respective group.

On another Italy could have won that. The first was a mile off side & the other two came from breakaways (both fantastic goals) but Italy could have been 2-1 up. Great game for the neutrals.

Don't go down the offside route matt - as there was a defender lying off the pitch to play him onside. Check out the forum and it will be explained more. I do agree though that the Italians should have scored. In all honesty it should have ben 4-2 to Holland in my opinion! lol

Cracking game, and my Dutch lads did me proud. France have to look at selection as PP says, baffling!!!
pentonpompey
So they didn't play Diarra and they couldn't beat Romania! Wake up Domenech (or is it Paul O'Grady in disguise?)

The first Dutch goal was NOT offside as a player had left the pitch without the referees permission hence he counted. Carpet and I had this discussion last night on a thread as we watched the game. As for Freddie (late of Freddie and the Dreamers fame) managing a national side my thoughts are unprintable. We know Distin and Diarra should be in the side but all over the pitch one wonders why?

Yes just read the blur on the first goal. Well you think you've seen it all, obviously not. Even the pundits were bemused!!!

Didn't watch the game so can't coment on it but if were going to get Harry interested in Players i'd tell him to have a good look at Huntelaar. What little i've seen of him makes him look like a hell of a player.

Steve C, we should have bought him last summer but he he didn't feel he was ready to leave Holland. Now Manure and co are looking at him, so that's blown it.

Offside rule is to cock how can a player ask permision to go off the pitch when he's been bundled off (own player) & only 3 seconds later they score.plattini & blatter the comedy duo should sort out the offside rule instead of finding fault whith the premier league at every oppertunity they can, they are jealous as there leagues are infearior
pompeyyong
well said mate!

If the ridiculous 'not interfering with play' thing is going to apply sometimes, then surely it has to apply to this? Who can tell with the offside rule at the moment, they make it up as they go along.
tracyc
Did you see Arry in the ITV studio last night? Game was dire, but I had to watch to see what the gaffer had to say about it.
tracyc
Pompeyyong sorry but i disagree, the rule is there to stop players stepping off the pitch to play people off side. as with all rules there will be occasions that raise questions but better this way than defenders stepping off the pitch every time they're facing an attack.
