Nugent rumours denied/Songo'o on his way

Nugent rumours denied/Songo'o on his way

Peter Storrie has spoken to The News to deny the latest rumours that Dave Nugent is on the verge of leaving Pompey - this time being reports that Hull have made an approach for him: 'that's a new one to me. I haven't heard about that.

'There has not been any contact with us for David. In fact, we have not had any approach for any of our players at this stage.'

The suggestion is that Hull are willing to pay £3m for him but are requesting he takes a pay cut, which The Sun claims would have to be £15,000 from his apparent £35,000 to 'a mere' £20,000...

The News also reports that we originally 'only' paid Preston £3m for the striker, so we would recoup all of our original outlay.

Whilst the reported £6m fee at the time of his signing last summer was later 'claimed' to have actually been more like £4.5m plus various add-ons, meaning at some point it could, if not would have been around that fee, I doubt we would have got him for as little as £3m and would think that letting him go for such an amount would not be in our best interests, nor would it be good business - but then again what do I know...

Next up, and this is where things seem to 'contradict' each other, Peter Storrie says that no approaches for any of our players have been made, yet The News are running the story that Franck Songo'o is 'definitely' on his way out of Pompey.

We have offered him a new deal but he is yet to sign it, with the reports being he is in talks with a couple of clubs about a move away - should he move on we would be entitled to a small fee owing to the fact that he is under the age of 24 so he would not legally qualify for a bosman free.

I am a fan of the young winger but maybe he is not to the quality that we are now looking for, and with other players being targeted if someone like Shaun Wright-Phillips did arrive he would have even less of a sniff of 1st team football then than he does now - although until any such move happens he will still be a Pompey player so you never know...

Again it is all just made up news giving us something to discuss and argue over, and them something to fill their pages with.

If Songo'o is out of contract then I feel he probably will move on. He has never really been given much of a chance here, so he probably just wants some first team football.

More paper bollox. At least when the euros start they can write about what is happening. Why should Nuge want go to Hull & take a massive pay cut? Would you?
03/06/2008 15:42:00
Keep Nugent... he will come good but he needs to be given games first. Every time he comes on he brings energy and pace to the team.
03/06/2008 16:00:00
Why would Nugent want to go to Hull? Especially with a massive pay cut! Typed that befoe Matt posted and fell asleep!! But it is right crazy some of these rumours the media start it really is.
03/06/2008 16:04:00
Songo'o obviously has talent but like most players just want to play football, if he wants to go then let him go.
03/06/2008 16:05:00
Hopefully Songo'o is just using interest in him to press for some first team football, because I wouldn't like to see him go. I'd at least like to see him given a chance in the first team to prove him, and we're going to have enough games this year that everyone should get a chance at some stage. The Nugent thing never made any sense to me. Even if I were to accept that he wants to go and the club isn't bothered about keeping him, I still can't see how we're going to get someone of his class or better for £3m, so there would have to be more money involved for this to make sense to me. Not that these things always make sense to me, of course.

Who ever believes what Storrie stays! I'm different to everybody else, think we should get rid of Nugent, never going to be good enough at this level, and if we can get £3M then take it. Songo I think does have something but again not at PL level. Storrie will always say there are no bids on the table until HR as stalked possible replacements.

Don't agree bluedr. Nugent needs to be given more of a chance. He is still a youngster and could blossom (do footballers blossom?) next year, given the right handling. I would hate to sell him on and then meet him coming the other way when he has finally found his feet in the premiership..
03/06/2008 21:23:00
Nugent needs games & goals maybe he'll get his chance with the extra games this season. Franck only one sub appearance (I think) so can't blame him if he wants to play.
03/06/2008 21:31:00
Keep Nugent - he can develop into a top-class striker. It's the silly season and the papers have nothing better to write about so they'll make stuff up on a daily basis.
