'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Quality and quantity...

Peter Storrie has often spoken about the players arriving at Pompey from now on will only be quality - most top, top quality - and nothing less.

'If' the club can pull it off, which I would not bet against at all, he says that with the thoughts of maintaining our league challenge and the added uefa cup for next season we are looking at 'a mixture of three quality players and two other good ones to make sure we have a big enough squad.'

So we can look forward to hopefully three top quality signings, which I would guess means players of an improved quality to virtually walk straight into the starting 11 and another couple, good enough to come in if asked, but not quite at the stage to be 'a regular', but better than merely a squad player?

Would we presume that these amounts be on top of what we already have though? So if anyone goes they too be replaced...

So - and this is something we started with Pompey transfer speculation no.1 - the question is who do you think, or hope these players will be and have you any insights to add as to who they might well be?

Knock yourself out guys!

quality: a striker a RW and a CB to replace sol and the other two, probably a defensive and attacking player for the future like subotic and so on. mabye aubey and baros will sign?
Yes I agree Gleeams. Three top class and two good squad player to make the five.
Crouch, Gouvo, SWP, Bridge and Dunne/W Brown in. Kanu, Baros, Lauren, Campbell, Diop, Songo'o out. Not a bad summer hey?!
Crouchio!!!!!! Little fella. Likes dancing.
in:Govou , shawn wright - philips , Kaboul , Gudjohnson / cisse , guiterez out:Kanu , Sean davis , campbell , pamarot , lauren
stfc ballboy
top quality centre forward, right winger, left back, centre back... thats basicly all we need... not much really...but if we can get them...champions league next season?
Agreed carpet, I only hope "HR" reads this site, otherwise we could finish up with anything.
now you've won silverware (something we failed to do last season) the danger is not taking that next step - speculate to accumulate!
Brown is a no, we have a better right-back already, Bridge, I would rather bring back Matt Robinson!!
Crouch has to be a banker , right wing/mid wright-phillips would be great ,centre back Mensah or the Brazilian at Benfica sorry his name has slipped my mind. then the other 2 Aubey & another striker.
, sky did a big 5 minute slot on Haynes coming to us from Ipswich and he does look the part, he looks the part is keen to come and has more of a future so i hope the emile risky rumour is just that....
carpet we also need to replace diop
'if' reports are true then we could soon see dunne arriving... crouchy will make 2, SWP the 3rd - i would be happy with that!
Dunne and Crouch won't be at Pompey this transfer period.Crouch maybe in January. SWP maybe but not hopeful. Heskey is the banker to come.
I may have to eat my words. According to the BBC international sports news on TV, Crouch, Dunne, and a West Indian teenager- Kahay or something like that- will be signed for us next week and SWP won't be far behind them thanks to some words in his ear by Avram Grant. With Kewell being in Harry's sights and Heskey one of Harry's favourites that could be the 5 new players he is after but I won't be suprised if he comes up with 2 or 3 more.
if - i almost said 'when' - crouchy signs i think that will end the interest in heskey, and that will conclude our striker signings...
wingers will be added, SWP hopefully and i still have this feeling about kewell aswell?
Heskey, not one of my favourites, but taking a sideways look at him, he is the sort of player who made the gaps for Defoe to exploit, and lets face it he has the qualities that Harry loves
On the big three, I'd have to agree with Rug. Crouch, Wright Phillips and Dunne would be a top summer. If we could land those three and keep hold of Diarra and Kranjcar, that would make me very satisfied. The two squad players? I really wouldn't mind with those three onboard.
Looking through various websites when i've had the time i would have to think that the 3 signings will be Crouch, SWP and Dunne. Think Crouch will be a definate, SWP will take some time and Dunne will probably go to the club that offers him the most money. With the likes of Spurs and Villa in for Dunne do you think that we can offer Dunne as much as they will? Kewell could come in as a good squad player,(back up for Kranjcar, God forbid he gets injured) and then Heskey as squad player to open up defense's in the final few minutes of a match. Out i think will be: Kanu, Baros, Lauren, Dare i say Muntari if the price is right?
good to hear from you again PompeyMilhouse28 - various websites tho, there is only one :-)
5 in if any leave they will have to be replaced its that simple as that. with Europe we will need a 30 man squad. Fulham just stayed up with 33.
We will need the strength in depth, whatever the quality. We were quite lucky with injuries & suspensions last season, heaven help us if...
Any player in Euro 08 action won't be moving until it finishes. Then you may see some action. This in turn will make some other players available which may attract us also.
Very good point storage perhaps thats why we have been linked with many English players & now another I heard today Wayne Bridge from Chelsea.
I would love to just see us sign all the players in this first week and then close trhe door on all in and out transfers. That way we can all have a nice relaxing summer holiday and debate on whether it will rain or not! lol
One idea just come from supporters out here. Now that Sven has been axed, do you think that Benjani may return? I'm sure 'Arry would love to have him back and so would we!!!
i think Baros will be playing for his pompey future in the euro's Crouch excluded i cant imagine Harry wont wait until the comp is well ongoing before tying up most of his business, he wouldnt want to miss a bargain
I think Harry has already made his list, but if some fall through then he will have to look again.
get our business done quickly seems to be the way people want it done - and i agree... waiting until after the euros could see prices inflate massively, not that i imagine many, if any that take part in the euros will be our targets anyway?
Milhouse I'd love to see Benji return but do you REALLY think it could happen ? .... As for Baros playing for his Pompey career Russ we surely have to ask how many more chances does he get to impress ? ... Yong I think you're probably right that he has already made his shopping list and as most are English the euros probably won't offer him much in terms of information.
Watch out Chix is about (again)! I agree that HR will want as many English players as possible. However never say never and players may become available for whatever reason just like JD on 31 January.
Would love to see Benji back.
Yep I'm back Dave slowly at first but wanting to create a bag with a breaking story ! - The Man City situation could be interesting if Hughes gets the job... Will he want Benji ? Will he want to keep Dunne ? Will he need a right winger (SWP) ?.. It'll be interesting to see how things develop
would like to see Crouch, SWP and Dunne as the quality players then perhaps Ronaldo and Rooney as the squad players.
Steve C
sorry think the missus has been putting something in the fairy cakes.
