Baros an option/Defoe wants Crouch and Heskey talk

Baros an option/Defoe wants Crouch and Heskey talk

Harry Redknapp is refusing to rule out the option of Milan Baros still become a permanent Pompey signing - as we do still have first option on signing him - telling The News: 'I have not spoken to Milan yet and it wouldn't be right for me to say what I want to do with him.

'It depends on lots of things. You've got to look at how much the club want for him, wages, that sort of thing. That's what these things involve.

'Milan did well for us. I like him. He put in some good performances. He did well in some matches.

'Nothing is decided yet, honestly. A few things have to be discussed first and then we will look at it.

'We'll just have to wait and see what happens.'

He does not sound that convincing to me with his thoughts to be honest though...

As I keep saying his effort and commitment cannot really be faulted, as I thought he was always a willing and able runner but he just never looked like scoring, his confidence just was not there... maybe a goal would have seen him go on a run and he could have scored double figures? As said though that first goal just never looked like coming, and it never did!

His movement and the ability to make space for others was exceptional, and we would miss that but for £6m I think we would look elsewhere, if we could get him for something like £4m I think we would snap him up with few questions asked...

Whereas the striker that Jermain Defoe wants to be paired with next season is his England teammate Peter Crouch: 'it would be great if Crouchie came.

'He is still under contract at Liverpool but we will see.

'I think we can go far next season but we do need a bigger squad.'

I know not everyone is a fan of Crouch but I would put money on more people wanting him to return to Pompey than those not - the current poll shows that he has plenty of support.

Yep, I still think that Crouch will become a Pompey player once he leaves Liverpool - maybe we will have to wait until January and get him cheaper, maybe we will have to wait until next summer to get him for nothing but I think he will be back...

Defoe has also again spoken about his move to Pompey being the right one.

Although, and to round up this little lot on strikers, it might not be Baros or Crouch that we move for over the summer but an old favourite of Redknapp's, a name that makes many people groan Emile Heskey.

Redknapp makes no secret about his admiration for the England man and has often said that he would like to have him in his squad, even if the majority of Pompey fans might not!

So he is being viewed as a 'cheaper' alternative if other deals do not come off...

I will admit that I am not that big a fan of Heskey, but I do think he is better than a lot of people think and when he is at his best, and we saw this when he got back into the England side last season he is as good as anyone around, but he does not have many goals in him at all.

For such a big, powerful bloke he goes down far too easily and picks up a fair few injuries too so Benjani would be a much better option to him in my opinion I reckon. They are around the same age, would offer similar qualities but we know what Benjani can do, and what he would do, plus he would score more goals.

He will not come back though and we are not looking to bring him back, this is merely a comparison of the two.

Baros a definite no no, Crouch would be a good addition at the right price (7M), Heskey I like, strong, powerful and can finish, again at the right price (3M). Need a good centre back, shame looks like Dunne might be going to Spuds as would have been ideal. Right Midfielder needed to replace Utaka (Pennant/SWP)

Baros didn't score but made things happen and gave 100% in most games. Opinions on the steet differ tremendously on whether we should sign him or not. Defoe would benefit from a big man alongside him and Heskey has looked better of late - even got back in the England side and performed with Owen. Watched Dunne play for the Republic last night and he looked very leaden footed (Kiely played well though).

"HR"'s comments on Baros tell us a lot don't they? Gosh! signing him would involve "things like, price, wages and that sort of thing". Thanks Harry for that great insight.

Not fussed either way on Baros, If we get him Great, he works hard and if he gets a run on goals, who knows he could be good. If we dont get him, great, then obviously Harry feels we dont need him, i think he deserves credit, and a chance at the right price, but if not... hey thats football. Crouch... would love him, and with Defoe and Nugent coming through, 3 english strikers hopefully all scoring goals, means we dont lose fire power when African nations kick in every other year. Keskey, yep like him too, wondered if he was a Donkey for a while but proved his worth last 2 years i think, ok he may not score a lot, but i would expect Defoe to score more with a person like Heskey setting him up. Lets get both Heskey and Crouch, we need a large squad to fight on all fronts, and its all English too so perfect.

If Defoe thinks Crouch would be a great strike partner, who am I to argue? I think they'd be a very productive combination. Count me in with the groaners on the subject of Heskey though. Completely agree that he's very good when he's "on" but we've already got Utaka for the "he's great when he plays though" category. Heskey would perhaps be better value than Baros, if their prices were similar, but I think Heskey would cost a bit more than Baros. Yep, agree with Midge, Defoe, Crouch and Nugent is the kind of lineup I'd kill for. Let's hope Dave is still here next year.

Although I'm not kean on his attitude and he is reputedly a bit of a prat,, I'd propose Nik Anelka. Chelsea don't need him (especially after that bungled penalty in Russia) he reliably scores goals and could probably be had for the same price as Crouch (who would run a close second in my books). There's also the " french connection " i.e. a significant portion of the squad who are francophones (after all, with the exception of next season, we do wear the same kit right !).
30/05/2008 15:05:00
crouch would be my first choice, then i don't want either heskey or baros - but would prefer heskey! Baros has looked uncomftable n the ball, has a poor first touch, can not controll the ball when it is in the air without handballing it, and all too often dives, and gives away needless fouls and handballs. heskey works hard, would work well with defoe - but in all honsety, he simply isnt good enough to compete in europe. we need goals, not just commitment!
30/05/2008 17:06:00
Heskey is a bit injury prone and so a bit of a gamble but I think he's had a great season and still has plenty in the tank. Plus, it would be another England international in the squad. Pinch me, am I dreaming?
30/05/2008 17:15:00
Crouch...yes please as i've said before. Heskey...If we have to, excellent foil for someone who can finish (Defoe) Baros...No thanks, been there got the T shirt, Ill fitting one at that. I don't think we'll see anything until after the Euro's finish and Harry can pick up some Eastern european for 22 quid, a stale banana and a chewed toffee apple

No More Quarter Final Replays For Pompey

Should Portsmouth progress through to an FA Cup quarter final from the 2016/17 season onwards, the game will no longer be subject to a replay.

On this day in history...27th May

A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, 27th May.

Chesterfield's O'Shea targeted

Although so far Pompey have had two bids turned down for Chesterfield's O'Shea. Will, assuming another bid (as it's expected) is made, it be third time luck for the Blues?

It wasn't Real Madrid but Bristol City isn't bad!

Contrary to what I just wrote (muppet that I am) this isn't at Fratton this is at Ashton Gate with Pompey heading to Bristol City on Saturday 30th July, with a 3pm kick-off.
