'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Could SWP be the 'Wright' winger for Pompey?

Our search for a right winger was inevitably going to at some point lead us to 'links' with Shaun Wright-Phillips, and although these links took a lot longer than I suspected they would these have finally come about...

The Sun is today running the story, saying that Harry Redknapp is preparing a '£10m cut-price move' to bring him to Pompey as our first summer signing to end his Chelski misery.

Chelski shelled out £22m to sign him from Citeh but he has been unable to repeat the form he showed for them and it is 'claimed' that Redknapp wanted to sign both Jermain Defoe and Wright-Phillips had he taken over at Newcastle. This did not happen as he stayed here, but he did get Defoe to finally come to Pompey and now he is apparently looking to add Wright-Phillips.

Do I think this move will happen?

I honestly do not know, but what I do know is I would not be against it at all as if Wright-Phillips is given a consistent run in any side I am convinced that we would see the kind of form that he showed at Citeh - and that would lead to him scoring his fair share, as well as creating many more...

write philips has gone into the two previous transfer windows playing in the first team. this time, he wasnt even in the champions league final squad. And after we won more than chelsea did last season, it is a real possibility.

SWP and Defoe; drool.....

would welcome wright-philips but it might not happen as chelsea new boss might wanna keep him.hope he does come along with govou.

This is an interesting one - although it will depend on what his Dad says to where he goes. I think he would make a great addition to the squad though. Pace and flair! Nice.

SWP was my first pick earlier in the year as a right winger for Pompey but there have been so many changes of heart from both him and his club that I gave up hope. We have been linked with so many players in the last few weeks that it is difficult to sort out anything. I won't be sorry if he comes to Pompey but I now think HR could have other players ahead of him on his list.
frattonaussie
who could be ahead of him on the list? Surely English players are desirable, leaving Bentley or Becks, and we will not sign either of those! SWP would be superb addition, and maybe a double bid for him and Bridge would be seriously considered by Chelsea. Utaka could also then be used as the striker that he is....

Crouch, Defoe, SWP, Johnson, Campbell and James. What other team would have more England players in it? Oh and I am sure before HR is finished Nugent and Cranie will also be England regulars?

...and don't forget his dad is good mates with Tony Adams. He'll be heartened too by the fact that he could secure a regular England slot by joining us. That said, if the new Chelsea boss wants to play the exciting and attacking football that Abramovich craves then SWP may fancy his chances of making it at Chelsea after all.

Presumably SWP would be instead of Govou, not as well as. I have some doubts about the price, whether the new Chelsea manager will want to keep him and whether he even wants to leave, but I don't have any doubt that he'd be a very good signing if it should happen.
PhilTaglia
go get him harry
Steve C
Would love to see him come, but expect its just paper talk would solve a big problem on the right.
pompeyyong
I am not saying other players would be ahead of SWP on ability but he won't be cheap and I think HR will have already done his sums on spending on other players. It looks like the players that would command big transfer fees are staying at Pompey, so the income from transfers will be realitively small and, IMO, not enough even with Sashas input, to allow HR to get SWP.
frattonaussie
wrighty keeps singing 'arrys praises on talksport. i really hope this move comes off. its swp or spiderman for me.
jbaker
Get 'er done Arry !...and while we're still in dream mode, can you also please get Thierry Henry on loan for the season....and I'll take an Aston Martin for myself, Cheers.
Toronto4Pompey
A nice thought but we would have to unload Utaka first & we seem keen to keep him?
