'If It's Football, It's Vital'

What to do with Kanoooooo?

Cup final hero Kanu has technically qualified for his new contract, yet this has not been signed, although 'the King' wants to stay - but will he be allowed to, do we even want him to?

It is a tough call; the fella has immense talent, ability and quality but can be 'carried' too often at times - maybe this is just his way, so it looks like he is being carried but he is not really? Carrying players is something that we cannot afford though. I maintain the thoughts that I have had all season that he is best used as an impact player to come off the bench... the problem with that is Harry Redknapp is unwilling to do this and had often - in my opinion - left him on the pitch for too long this season, when a chance for a fresher, more willing pair of legs could have made a difference.

Kanu can play the lone role, but - and again merely in my own opinion - is not suited to this lone role with the style that we play, and is often much more effective as a pairing as opposed to the lone man.

It is a difficult one, how do you show the door to a man that has proved the match winner in both of your Wembley appearances this season, scoring the goal that won you your first piece of major domestic silverware for almost 70 years?

The answer is you cannot really can you, but there is not room for sentimentality in football these days is there, we have seen this all too often this season alone... To be honest I had hoped that he would move on in the summer, but now I am struggling to be happy with this should it happen!

With us needing a bigger squad he would certainly be worth keeping, but the thought that he would start more games than he should next season, and also stay on for too long in these does worry me - but then again his touch of class could prove such a difference. Used in the right way next season he would be a real asset, but overused and he could become a hindrance - but how long would he be willing to stay if he spent most his time on the bench?

He wants to stay, and told someone I know prior to his friends of Kanu game that all he wanted was a new contract, he did not want anymore money he just wanted to stay here - how can you argue with that? And in all honesty I would be surprised if he were not here next season.

Come what may he will forever be etched into our history, and is a man we will be eternally grateful to for scoring the goal that won us the FA cup...

Rug, I agree with all you say, but are we not contractually bound to keeping him for another season? Why talk of a new contract?
007
I thought so too, 007, and I think he's still got what it takes. I would like to see him take a role behind a front two when we are chasing a game.
Pompeyscum
Enbalm him. Put him in a museum as a reminder of the goals he scored at Wembley. Bring him out for special occassions.
storagematt
Again I agree Rug, I think he should have come off after about the hour mark and Baros should have come on to add that bit of pace that the King is all to clearly lacking now a days. If Crouch comes, he will play alongside Defoe and unless injured or suspended both will play all the league games. Kanu along with the other striker(s) will get their chances, but it will be the cup games and cameo appearances.
blarmy
I agree with Storagematt....exhibit him in the Egyptian section labelled 'King Tutankanu'.
Tantona
He will be a useful player to have going into Europe with the experience that he already has. His slower style of play is much more suited to the continent and he can fire us all the way to the UEFA Cup final!
sneakay
How can anyone even be questioning this? He just scored the winning goal for us in the cup final! it doesn't matter if he doesn't play one minute of football for us this season, he deserves to be fully supported by the club and the fans no matter what you think about a 32 (allegedly) year old striker who couldn't out strip a tortoise.
stooH
want him 2 to stay as he is useful and does hold ball up well but in another way go i want him to go as he has no pace and also is frustrating.
stfc ballboy
It was me that spoke to Kanu!! Yep fella's I thanked him for winning us the cup, shook his hand and said I hope you get your new contract. A woman next to me said "and a pay rise", he said, no no no, I don't need a pay rise, just another year's contract. Good on ya Kanu, hope you get it.
pompey4me
european teams play a slower game. it will suit kanu. hould we really be discussing wheteher or not to give our FA cup hero -nd (second, i think) top socrer a new contract???
pompeycarpet
I thought this was already sorted, he played the amount of games to get another year . Now just waiting to have it drawn up as Tony Adams surley
pompeyyong
King Kanu must stay! He looks slow but he pops up and scores. And he's our FA cup hero. Long live the King.
tracyc
P4me you must be Kanu's agent offering him a pay rise!! Give him a contract though without doubt.
eastneydave
Dave, I didnt offer the pay rise, it was the woman naxt to me. I was, tho, pleasently surprised when he said he didn't want a pay rise, just a new contract.
pompey4me
Of course he should get his contract. He's more than earned it, and I do sincerely believe he'll be an asset to the club next year. Does Harry need to wake up and realize that there are better ways to use him than sticking him up front alone for 75 minutes? Yes. But that's not Kanu's failing, and providing Harry sees the light, he'll do a good job for us next year too.
PhilTaglia
Wether you like Kanu as a player or not we are honor bound to give him a contract. He was promised one and has filled his side of the bargain and won the Cup for us. Unlike last year he has come straight out and said he will sign a new contract. If he leaves then I will be very disappointed in the ethics of the Portsmouth management.
frattonaussie
I agree frattonaussie, and I also agree with Philtaglia that Harry should find better ways to use him.
