'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Were all going on a European tour!

Now that the fact we won the FA cup is starting to fully sinking in for everyone, I would suspect, we also have the reality of embarking on our first ever European involvement and next season's uefa cup looks pretty tasty to me!

People play down the importance of the uefa cup, with its bigger, more lucrative brother the champions league often looking down its nose at it, but you try telling the winner of the uefa cup that is does not mean anything these days and they will tell you otherwise.

The format is bizarre these days, and the fact that champions league 'drop-outs', teams that were not good enough for that competition are allowed to then come into the uefa cup is a farce but it is still promising to be some competition...

You tell me that the thought of playing someone like AC Milan, Paris St-Germain, Benfica, Valencia or Ajax does not appeal to you and I will call you a liar - there are some fantastic clubs entered into next seasons tournament and just think we could, and all being well will pit our wits against them.

Imagine playing at the San Siro or the Amsterdam Arena and although the chances are they will make it through the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Marseille do still need to get through a champions league qualifier to avoid dropping into the uefa cup.

Sevilla won the uefa cup two years running before stepping up to the champions league - they are back in the uefa cup next season. Sampdoria, Borussia Dortmund, Feyenoord and Brugge are just a few of the other big time names that we could come up against.

We have a two-legged tie to play in the first round - which no matter where it is I am desperate to go and as a season ticket holder I would imagine that I would have first dibs? - that should we get through we would then move into the group phase, which would then make the chances of facing someone like AC Milan even more possible - I bet they would not fancy coming to Fratton would they!

Were all going on a European tour,
A European tour,
A European tour...

I've got my pink pass sorted for the first match in Europe. Sod's law says we'll end up playing Llanelli AFC or the like.

The appeal of playing any of those certainly does appeal. Looks like we'd better satrt saving the pennies for a few flights abroad this next season. As you say could even play Barcelona, and at Fratton, now that would be something to see, they wouldn't know what hit em when they drive down Frogmore Road and then enter the ground. Roll on September 18th

I dunno how it works but are there seeds and will we be seeded low therefore the likeliness of playing one of the big boys early is high?

Just so everyone knows - Ajax didn't qualify for Europe this season. They got beaten in their last game so did not qualify.
sneakay
Could we play Everton or Man C; that would be a bit of a kick in the teeth
UKTony
Nothing wrong with Llanelli
UKTony
Just read that we are straight in to round 1 with no qualifying ties to worry about. Bring on the big boys :)
UKTony
That is right Tony - No qualifying for us. One round and then group stages! maybe someone like Benfica in the first round! ooooh
sneakay
Nothing wrong with Llanelli at all, but if i'm going to get a few nights away with the lads Milan would hold more appeal than Llanelli ;-)

I have realised my mistake - Ajax failed to qualify for the Chamions League, but are in the UEFA Cup! Sorry.

dortmund... they have one big stadium...not that it makes much noise (went there on one of there "derby" days - and the atmosphere was worse than...well, its the worst i have been to. (and ive seen queen of the south play!)

isnt there a rule that we cant play a team from the same country until the knockout stages ?!?! or is that just me?!?!
pompey--pessimist
no-idea...but it would be very disopointing to be knoekced out by fulham/mancity in the first round!
pompeycarpet
So no-one fancy Young Boys then?!!!!!
NinjaTim
....or the brilliantly named Honka (from Finland)

Time off from work, bleedin' expensive & avoiding the violence from the local police. When do we start.

Lets hope we can go far & put our self on the map.

i cannot wait for the european tour to begin - going to be sorting out getting the time off work for the 1st and 2nd legs for round 1 as i plan to 'hopefully' make both the home and away leg - finances permitting! also thinking ahead so keeping the date for the final free too, just incase :-)
