Dean Ashton anyone?

Dean Ashton anyone?

In the lead up to the FA cup the 'links' with players - too and from Pompey - have been few and far between, which is good as this keeps the preparation solely on the job in hand, but I picked up on a little snippet today that thinks we 'might' be in to 'rival Manyoo' for the signature of Dean Ashton this summer - if West Ham sell, with it claimed they 'must sell before they can buy'...

I have always rated the fella and think we were in for him when he went to West Ham - but the price frightened us off? If we could be in the running for him this time I would not be disappointed at all, even more so if it would 'only' take a mere £8m to get him, I reckon we could stretch to that but Manyoo are always more likely to beat us to his signature aren't they anyway?

Peter Crouch or Dean Ashton?

It is a tough call, both have fine qualities but as an all round player I think that Ashton would just shade it for me to be honest, but I am a fan of Crouch so I would be happy with either.

All in all though I do think that Crouch would be the more likely arrival, I might even go as far as to say he will re-arrive at Fratton in the not to distant future...

I do like Ashton. He's a proper old-fashioned centre forward, but with a bit of intelligence thrown in and would compliment Defoe nicely. My only reservation is his injuries. To me Crouch shades it though, having played at a higher level consistently and always scored lots of goals.

If Harry goes ahead and signs Baros though we will not need another striker. Lets just hope he does not bother with Baros and gets someone who can score goals!

Either would complement Defoe. We need 4 top strikers. I thought we would sign Ashton we when he was at Norwich but we signed Benji instead. We will only sign Barros if Lyon give him away & we use him as 4th choice. He has done little to impress & if we want to do better next season, we can do better than him.

Crouchie! Crouchie! Baros has done great since he's been here but I don't think he brings much extra to the squad. If we can't get big Pete then what are the chances of re-signing Benjani?

I think I'd go for Ashton but has had injury problems. Anyone remember his performance for Crewe at FP when they murdered us 4-1 Yoshi and all?

If the Hammers need to sell before they buy, they'll be letting go of players like Ljungberg, Solano and Boa Morte before they sell Ashton. No go this one fellas. I'm up for a strong forward in the mould of Berbatov/Drogba/Amauri/Toni, that kind of player. And I fancy going for Jefferson Farfan, his stock is low and he's a great talent.

yeah let's sign Ashton, we could do with the odd goal from over head kicks...

Please don't sign Baros. I think Crouch would be great but I think Ashton is real class and we've yet to see the best of him. Crouch for £15m or Ashton for £10m? Go for Ashton, buy back Benjani and still have change for a fish supper.

To maintain top 10 for next season, let alone improve, we need 2 strikers that will get 30+ prem goals between them. Barros can get his cup winners medal & then byeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Done Deal - Smith in permanently from Swindon

The interest Pompey retained in Smith, with him 'in our sights' has resulted in him returning to the Blues on a permanent basis after signing for an 'undisclosed fee' from Swindon.

Cushioning the blow

Much, that needed saying, about Webster's exit for Ipswich and the arrival of Clarke in return (and cash) has been said hasn't it? Doyle's been spot on with what he said.

Swindon striker in 'Pompey's sights'

Michel Smith, who was of course on loan last season, could return? He's still in 'Pompey's sights' by all accounts after Swindon informed him he's 'surplus to requirements' now.
