'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Dean Ashton anyone?

In the lead up to the FA cup the 'links' with players - too and from Pompey - have been few and far between, which is good as this keeps the preparation solely on the job in hand, but I picked up on a little snippet today that thinks we 'might' be in to 'rival Manyoo' for the signature of Dean Ashton this summer - if West Ham sell, with it claimed they 'must sell before they can buy'...

I have always rated the fella and think we were in for him when he went to West Ham - but the price frightened us off? If we could be in the running for him this time I would not be disappointed at all, even more so if it would 'only' take a mere 8m to get him, I reckon we could stretch to that but Manyoo are always more likely to beat us to his signature aren't they anyway?

Peter Crouch or Dean Ashton?

It is a tough call, both have fine qualities but as an all round player I think that Ashton would just shade it for me to be honest, but I am a fan of Crouch so I would be happy with either.

All in all though I do think that Crouch would be the more likely arrival, I might even go as far as to say he will re-arrive at Fratton in the not to distant future...

I do like Ashton. He's a proper old-fashioned centre forward, but with a bit of intelligence thrown in and would compliment Defoe nicely. My only reservation is his injuries. To me Crouch shades it though, having played at a higher level consistently and always scored lots of goals.

If Harry goes ahead and signs Baros though we will not need another striker. Lets just hope he does not bother with Baros and gets someone who can score goals!
sneakay
Either would complement Defoe. We need 4 top strikers. I thought we would sign Ashton we when he was at Norwich but we signed Benji instead. We will only sign Barros if Lyon give him away & we use him as 4th choice. He has done little to impress & if we want to do better next season, we can do better than him.

Crouchie! Crouchie! Baros has done great since he's been here but I don't think he brings much extra to the squad. If we can't get big Pete then what are the chances of re-signing Benjani?
Pompeyscum
I think I'd go for Ashton but has had injury problems. Anyone remember his performance for Crewe at FP when they murdered us 4-1 Yoshi and all?
eastneydave
just a big rumour, but I would love Ashton, I rate him very very highly & I think he would fit in perfectly with the current squad..great player..heres hoping!!
CharlieChimes
If the Hammers need to sell before they buy, they'll be letting go of players like Ljungberg, Solano and Boa Morte before they sell Ashton. No go this one fellas. I'm up for a strong forward in the mould of Berbatov/Drogba/Amauri/Toni, that kind of player. And I fancy going for Jefferson Farfan, his stock is low and he's a great talent.
stillthewhizz
yeah let's sign Ashton, we could do with the odd goal from over head kicks...
ChrisW
Please don't sign Baros. I think Crouch would be great but I think Ashton is real class and we've yet to see the best of him. Crouch for 15m or Ashton for 10m? Go for Ashton, buy back Benjani and still have change for a fish supper.
NinjaTim
To maintain top 10 for next season, let alone improve, we need 2 strikers that will get 30+ prem goals between them. Barros can get his cup winners medal & then byeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
storagematt
Oh yes please!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I just can't see it happening. I reckon Harry will slip us another African from Mauritania or Botswana
pentonpompey
Agree with stillthewizz Jefferson farfan will be a great signing for us as he hits over 20 goals a season he is also young or maybe benjani.Arry don't buy baros he has nothing good about except his attituide.
stfc ballboy
We're not going to sign Baros guys I can almost guarantee it.
stillthewhizz
Just seen klansnic is for sale at werder bremen he is a good striker also he won't cost us anything as he is a free agent this summer.
stfc ballboy
tough one this - but i see crouch as both a more realistic targetand a better one!
pompeycarpet
Ninja's got a good point, i like crouch, I think he would be great for the team, but 15?.....15???? no thanks, im sure Arry could wanggle a couple of top strkers for that!!
CharlieChimes
Pompey dont need Baros when they can sign me for FREE !!! I'm sure i can put more effort in 10 mins than what he can.
tommo3146
I would like either, but I have been hearing on sky sports that Ashton is having talks about long term contract with West Ham, seems Crouch is still more likely, but less than 15m. (Rafa the clown).
pompeyyong
tommo - as a free transfer though, i guess you would be wanting big wages ;-). maybe we couldnt afford them?
pompeycarpet
carpet ... he would be on a "mbesuma" type contract ... a few burgers a week would keep him happy (and luckily out of the first team! :p)
pompey--pessimist
I won't bet on either Aston or Crouch coming our way. We have been scouting 2 or 3 european strikers recently and I expect at least one of them to be in our line up next season.
frattonaussie
I agree with you FA, I can't see either Ash or Crouch coming our way. Ashton's is possibly an agent stiring it up to get The Hammers to up their offer; and Crouch? How on earth do we pay for his Wages AND Transfer??? less than 20k ave home gate AND a set of books that make Bearings Bank look like a tempting propersition.
pentonpompey
I heard a rumour that we're going after Reading's Kevin Doyle - I hope this is as well as Crouch or Ashton because, good as he is, surely Doyle is not our number one transfer target when it comes to strikers? Someone mentioned Darren Bent from Spurs......perish the thought!!!!! Mind you, I think I'd have either of them in preference to Baros.
NinjaTim
both are good, so either would be a good choice, especially if the other choice is Baros! :)
