'Are you Quashie in disguise?'

'Are you Quashie in disguise?'

'Are you Quashie in disguise?' This is something that Papa Bouba Diop must have heard several dozen times this season - some might say harshly so but it is official, he has the worst shot in the top flight... and by some way.

Having unleashed a mighty 46 attempts at goal - and that is just with his feet, we might be able to almost double it if we added the attempts with his head! - he has failed to hit the back of the net once, in all honesty he has troubled those in the stands more than the keepers!

Papa Bouba Diop - Portsmouth - 46 attempted shots
John Arne Riise - Liverpool - 36 attempted shots
Gary O'Neil - Middlesbrough - 31 attempted shots
Robert Earnshaw - Derby County - 25 attempted shots
Luis Boa Morte - West Ham United - 23 attempted shots
Hayden Mullins - West Ham United - 23 attempted shots
Alan Smith - Newcastle United - 23 attempted shots
Craig Fagan - Derby County- 22 attempted shots
Michael Brown - Wigan Athletic - 21 attempted shots
Emmanuel Eboue - Arsenal - 17 attempted shots

Can Diop pinch a goal in the final couple of games of the season or will he officially be crowned setanta sports 'The Golden Shot King' this season? Even if he does score I would expect him to raise his bat aloft having reached his half-century first though!

Harry Redknapp leapt to his defence last week and whilst he does have an undoubted presence in midfield and does do some good work that can go unnoticed for me he has not done enough of the basics - and I am not even talking about shooting, as that is not a basic as such, well not always! - to justify a continued place in the starting 11 week after week after week, but then again maybe we would notice a difference if he was not playing...

I originally wrote a similar article a few months ago & you would have hoped by now Diop would have scored. Obviously not. The point is he keeps shooting from 40 yards out when he can't tap in from 5 yards. Yes he gives us other things but when he is outside the box, pass the ball to someone else please!

Agree Matt, although you can never knock a bloke for trying I just wish he'd think of the team sometimes... although I bet he pops up and scores the winner in the final..he has a habit of scoring memorable goals.. France v Senegal in the World Cup for one..

Feel sorry for him as he does put a lot of hard work in, I think he had a very good game against Newcastle lets hope we see one fly in the net soon.

it depends how far high or wide of the goal you are - the closer the safer you should be :-)

Almost there...stay on target

The win over Newport saw Pompey react well to the defeat to Stevenage with most results going in the Blues' favour too, meaning we've effectively got a seven point buffer on Boro.
