Defoe's frustration... Can you blame him?

Defoe's frustration... Can you blame him?

You can understand why Jermain Defoe is frustrated at the fact that he will miss the FA cup final cant you, as he also had to miss the league cup final having already left Spurs to join us! But the silver lining for him, as he told The Daily Mirror would be playing in Europe next season should we beat Cardiff: 'of course it's frustrating to miss the Cup final. It's something I think about every day.

'The good thing is that if we win against Cardiff then we'll be in Europe next year, which is where we all want to play'.

Despite the fact that he will miss his second cup final of the season he has no regrets at all about joining Pompey - and why should he! We are very much moving forward, ok we might stutter from time to time but come on guys all good things come to those that wait, so after waiting as many years as we have I do not think we can be too unhappy with our lot at the moment can we...

The most frustrating thing for me about having Defoe cup tied is the fact that this rule, although it is a long standing one, is certainly a bit dated now in this day do we not think?

The FA seem willing to bend rules whenever it suits - allowing Cardiff to play in the uefa cup next season is the most recent example - yet things like the 'cup tied' ruling, which would clearly benefit games as a spectacle, as you would have the best players playing will not be changed. When all is said and done when you are paying good money you want to see the best players play - stuffy old-fashioned rules are denying you this. I know it might be unfair on players from the past that were penalised that way, but so much else has changed about the game so why not this?

Whilst I am on a roll, another ruling is the suspension procedure - why should you be suspended from a cup competition if you pick up the suspension in the league and visa versa? If your suspension begins in the league surely it should end in the league, not carry over to a cup competition. If you are suspended domestically you are not penalised for a European game, so why can we not work the same system covering domestic games - is it really that difficult...

good rant mate, i agree with the whole cup tied situation, its just daft!! he played 10 mins as a sub for spurs and now cant play a cup game for us, thats just ridiculous! regarding suspension, it should be all of one, or none of the other ... i mean you either keep the suspension within the realms that u recieved it (so if in cup, then only cup suspension and not league) or for all competitions (so if in league red card, could carry through to ALL cups incl european cups)!!

I feel sorry for Defoe as he's done you proud and I was very sorry to see him go. Alan Hutton was cup tied in the UEFA cup for us.... After playing for Rangers in the CL before they were knocked out. Now that is daft.

Loads of double standards everywhere not withstanding the Welsh national anthem to pacify mighty Cardiff.
29/04/2008 10:57:00
We did know the position when we signed him though.
29/04/2008 11:19:00
without doubt, we - and he - knew the rule when he signed but i think it is about time that the FA did something about this rule... if they come out with this bull***** that they 'cannot do anything about it' they are lying, as they 'happily' change things when it suits them! surely tho it would benefit the FA to change this ruling as it would mean better players playing all the time, which will mean more people interested, which will mean even more money made for them...

Previously I would have been content to say "rules are rules" and leave it at that. However, given that (as alluded to by others already) the FA are happy to change the rules for Cardiff, we (and Defoe specifically) do seem to be getting the "bend over" treatment.

Makes me sick... Welsh national Anthem, Cardiff to represent England in UEFA if they were to win, and now the FA are looking to overturn their red card this weekend, not because they felt it was not intentional.. but because it would be unfair to punish the player by not letting him play at wembley... IF this is true, why the hell are they not changing rules for Pompey, and other teams of the future, and allowing Defoe to play at Wembley. FA makes me sick, really really sick, I hope we win, i really do, but if we dont, and Cardiff fans ruin Englands name in Europe with their pathetic attitude to life, i hope the FA stand in the dock, and accept the guilty as charged. Cardiff already want to smash up Wembley, so money on them doing the same in Europe, poxy stupid welsh sheep shagging coooonts..... Rant over sorry.

Welsh national anthem was only anouced after they were told they could represent England, funny that!. we knew the rule Defoe was cup tied yes, also Cardiff knew the rule when they enterd the FA cup I can understand your frustration Midge, never mind mate the cup will be ours then they wont be going anywhere.
29/04/2008 19:01:00
Midge.. I agree and there are a fair number of West Ham fans who are not happy with the treatment given to 'their' staute of Sir Bobby - Cardiff seem to be getting all the breaks at the minutes but hey ho what will we care when we win.... as for Defoe being cup tied and the suspension process, I agree the rules are crap but at least they do seem to stick to them... mostly.. when it suits

JD has missed two finals this year as he could have played in the Carling Cup Final if he had stayed at Spuds and misses the FA Cup Final becasue he moved. Desperately hard luck!!

No More Quarter Final Replays For Pompey

Should Portsmouth progress through to an FA Cup quarter final from the 2016/17 season onwards, the game will no longer be subject to a replay.

On this day in history...27th May

A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, 27th May.

Chesterfield's O'Shea targeted

Although so far Pompey have had two bids turned down for Chesterfield's O'Shea. Will, assuming another bid (as it's expected) is made, it be third time luck for the Blues?

It wasn't Real Madrid but Bristol City isn't bad!

Contrary to what I just wrote (muppet that I am) this isn't at Fratton this is at Ashton Gate with Pompey heading to Bristol City on Saturday 30th July, with a 3pm kick-off.
