'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Ambitious or Deluded?

I base my assumption on a couple of issues, the first is we have won nothing yet, we have a great chance of course, but there is a tasty bit of silverware without our name anyway prominent yet, it is right at the beginning with the likes of Huddersfield and Blackpool.
Secondly after the game on Sunday I was listening to The Quay in the car on the way home, several disgruntled fans felt the need to vex their feelings on air, a lot were saying how awful we are now playing, one went as far as to say that every single player in a Pompey shirt was going through the motions, I would love to have seen him put in a room with Distin who could explain his lung-bursting run to break up an attack in the first half, or Diarra, who could explain how he simply dwelled on the ball and never stood out like a shining beacon, he could also have a word with Kranjcar who was so uncommited he managed to come off better in a 50-50 challenge with the impossing Samba.

To top it all off, I read in The News tonight, a letter saying we should be in for signing David Villa, one of the most sought after strikers in Europe! I'm sure he would love to swap Valencia to play in the decrepit Fratton Park in front of the sub 19,000 crowd who could be bothered to turn up.

A reality check is needed in many quarters, in out part of the world we are in the prime spot, we have a first final in 69 years to look forward to, our nearest and dearest rivals are on the cusp of League 1 football after lording over us for years, Bournemouth are in administration, facing extinction and hovering just above League 2 football, and finally Aldershot are only just emerging from the ashes of near extinction after more than 20 years of non-league and financial meltdown.

I have watched Pompey for nearly 30 years now, I first went in '79 during the dark years, I cleary remember '83 and the first sniff of success in winning Div3, I recall the joy of promotion and then relegation with Bally, and I remember the 15 years of snatched success in the F.a Cup (1992) and the odd great result like Spurs in 1985 and beating the then mighty Leeds on their own patch in 1997.

Today we are in the hallowed land of the Premiership, we have quality players we could only of dreamed of signing only 6 years ago, we are chasing honours, we are chasing European football and have plans for a new stadium and new training ground.

Sit down people, pour a drink and be grateful for what we are receiving, it could be worse, so much worse, just ask Vital Saints!

Sobering that Paul. Perhaps that is why the atmosphere (or lack of) was so bad Sunday, we are, as a crowd, just expecting too much. I know the Distin moment you speak of, how he could run at that pace for so long, at 30 years old.... Only thing I agreed on the Quay on Sunday was the general feeling, from one fan in particular, that Mark Mudie has got too big for his boots. He seems to forget he is on a freebie every week, doesnt he. I just cant get over how he is called 'the fan in the stand' because he most certainally does not reflect my views, nor anybody I speak to.

Deluded. There is no excuse for some of our poor performances but we have to remember the time of the year and the fact that we are mostly playing out of our skins. Coming up to Cup Final, we're going to get players who not only have the cup on their mind emotionally but physically as well as they look to stay fit. It was always going to be a tall order to finish fifth and win the cup. We haven't had the same 11 for two games running for a long time now and it doesn't help.
stillthewhizz
the players are tiring, and probably want the season to just end! good football and continued succes are what will bring the crowds - and we should just want to settle down as a team, and play the way we want to play.

1) we needed benji on sunday, we have a pace team and not a strong team, 2) purse has been red carded and should miss fa cup final, so theres hope for us yet, 3) we played krap in teh semi final at wembley, 4) we should have won the last 2 games and be there aiming for 5th and using the cup as a back up not the other way round!

Benji has gone, has been since January, that is not to change, people have to move on, Gario and Taylor have also left, we are one of the strongest teams in the Premiership! We also have pace, Purse has only figured in about 18 games all season, never in the cup! 5th has all but gone so no back up, so the cup it is!

Cardiff will apeal red card of purse, they say it was just a missed timed tackle. I did not see it myself, but surely we should consentrate on our game then we will get the win we all want.

TBH mate, I dont care who can and cant play for them, as long as the Pompey players are responsible, and play to their best, they WILL beat any team that Cardiff can field. Welcome onboard by the way pompeyyong.

Any realistic prospect of 5th place now has gone, but as long as we win the cup, who's going to care? Would be nice to get a couple of wins on the way ito Wemberley - for that momentum though. BUt not at the cost of injuries or suspensions. I actually thought our midfield played well in the first half. They were passing well and keeping possession better than they have for ages, and controlling the midfield. Pity we didn't score though. Its a fantastic season, and all Pompey fans need to catch their breath and remember that. Its not suprising if the players are distracted by the cup, because we all are after all.

We have come so far in the last 6 years that it is hard to imagine the utter 5hite we suffered before Harry took over. Succes was staying up at Huddersfield & Bradford. Would we swap with the scummers or suffer below performances in recent weeks. How bad is finishing 9th again? Those how moan under the circumstanmces need a massive reality check. As for all those so desperate to get tickets for the semi & final, where the fck are you now. I've had a season ticket for the last 17 seasons. we used to have home gates of 8-10,000 & there was loads to moan about but you kept going because you believed that there would be seasons like this!

my only concern is the lack of width and creativity in midfield - which is meaning we cannot score, hence we cannot win but i thought we again played fairly well on sunday as we did against citeh, yet we lost both games... so i feel people are worrying without real reason, i do feel we need to find some forward momentum tho - as if my thoughts on that were a 'secret' :-)
i never give up hope, so altho it is a very, very long shot i will not give up on 5th place until it is mathematically impossible.

I read somewhere today, that Portsmouth have been punching above their weight all season and it is now coming home to haunt us. Bloody cheek! How can we be punching above our weight when three of our players were selected for England, our Goalie has just been up for an award and most of our other players are internationals for their countries? What has the press got against Pompey? - we never get a good write up. We certainly don't need our fans saying our players are only going through the motions - which is not true!

It's nice to see an article about Pompey that puts the season into clear perspective. Having supported Pompey for 43 years every year we have been in the premiership has been a blast !!!! and this season has put the icing on the cake. So just enjoy the ride. Play Up Pompey
