'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Jamo makes the team Ronaldo & Fabregas win awards

After a fantastic season Cristiano Ronaldo has rightly been voted PFA Player of the Year, with Cesc Fabregas picking up the Young Player award. David James might have been beaten to the main PFA award - there was only ever going to be one winner though - but he does make the PFA Team of the Year.

You cannot deny that Ronaldo deserved to win this award again but upon receiving his award he said that he believed he deserved to win it: 'I voted for Adebayor because I think he has had a great season as well.

'But you have many players who have had a good season - Torres, Fabregas, many players. But I think I deserve to win!'

He did praise his teammates as well - as you would expect and he is a truly great footballer, but did he really need to say that? Praising teammates and accepting the award graciously with thanks is surely the way to go, not saying 'I think I deserve to win'... maybe it was tongue in cheek?

Arsenal have had a wonderful season and for the entertainment they have provided and the football offered they deserved something for their efforts - it will be little consolation but Fabregas picking up the PFA Young Player award and them having 4 players in the PFA team is some recognition for their achievements this season when many wrote them off, thinking they might not even make the top 4!

James missed the Blackburn defeat yesterday with a calf injury, but 'should' be fit for the cup final has admitted looked a bit shaky in the couple of games prior to that but he has had a fantastic season - as he did last year - so is rightly named as the PFA keeper of the Year. Congratulations to him, thoroughly deserved.

Some people believe that James is 'overrated', not an opinion I share at all to be honest as he is only starting to enjoy the kind of credit and praise that his form of the past 2-3 years or so has deserved - and I count his form with Citeh before we signed him as well.

If you ask me there is only one other keeper that could have rivalled James for this spot this season and that is another 'veteran' in Blackburn keeper Brad Friedel.

This is the PFA Team of the Year in full:

David James (Portsmouth)
Bacary Sagna (Arsenal)
Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd)
Nemanja Vidic (Man Utd)
Gael Clichy (Arsenal)
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd)
Ashley Young (Aston Villa)
Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal)
Fernando Torres (Liverpool)

can we have Diarra back now?

at least £10m would do the trick now :-) i hope that we keep him for another season at least tho tbh, and for the sake of his career i think he needs some stability so 'should' stay... this is not to say that he 'will' stay?
pompeyrug
nice one pr, I wouldn't mind paying 10 mil for him if Flamini leaves. I think u need to keep the likes of him, Kranjcar, Defoe and most of the defense so you can build on the results from this season. Good luck and hope u win the FA Cup.
G4L
stability as a club is also the secret to any continued success here, wholesale changes and all the good work is undone... we need to keep as many as we can and add to them, if we do this we will be able to consistently stay in and around the top 4-6 i reckon.
pompeyrug
we need to keep practicly all our players, and only add one, two (or three max) TOP TOP class players - thats all this summer, stability is the key! well done jamo though for this season, and well done ashley young, the only other player who doesnt play for a top 4 club to make the team!

gj is better than sagna, surely...

Good shout that bakes, I've not seen a better right back play at FP this year.

Great reward for Jamo, top bloke & really pleased for him. A great reflection on Pompey too. Thought Gareth Barry might have squeezed in. No argument with the 2 actual winners.

johnson's defending has come on leaps and bounds but he still needs abit of work on his game - 'if' he carries on his current form next season you would expect him to improve yet further so he could well make that side next season...

I absolutely agree - we need to keep as many of our players as possible. It will be a nightmare bedding in loads of new players, especially ones from abroad, as they will also have to get used to playing in the premier league. We have a nice core of players now, who are only just getting used to playing together, and "three top additions" would be wonderful. Plus - if we go into Europe, we will need all the good players we can get, as our squad really is not big enough yet. By the by, can we afford all these new players and the additional wages, given the size of our stadium. PS: Did anyone notice how many unsold seats there were in the Milton End?

I guess I've said so in another thread here before. But congrats David James, the keeper of the year! I'm a fan of his - actually thorougly enjoy his Guardian column too. Oh, if you want to keep Diarra, how about Tony, is he negotiable? Can we have him back? ;)
