Nugent scores 'overdue' goal...

Nugent scores 'overdue' goal...

...ok it might have 'only' been in the reserves but it was a goal nonetheless and this should help boost his confidence as he looks to stake a claim or a cup final place.

Dave Nugent scored his first Pompey goal at any level for the reserves last night in the draw with Reading. That was his first goal at any level since his winner in the 3rd round of the FA cup against Ipswich and as he told The News is was long overdue: 'I was due a goal, I've not played many games this season so it was nice to on this occasion.

'My right foot is stronger. My left is just for standing on really but when I swing it sometimes it goes in and sometimes it goes into the crowd.

'It's massive for my confidence.

'I should have actually scored a few more. I missed a couple of chances, but you've got to be there to miss them.

'I thought I worked hard up there on my own again and I enjoyed it.

'It's now down to me to keep playing and getting match fitness to change the gaffer's mind in the forthcoming weeks for the FA Cup final'.

I did not see Nugent, but it is said that he 'looked lively as the lone striker', can anyone verify this?

It is still almost 100% certain that Kanu will be the man that gets to lead the line, if of course we go with the lone striker, but if Nugent keeps plugging away then you never know… either way he will almost certainly be a part of the squad that takes part in the final, even if he does not start.

I think that it is very important for Nugent and Milan Baros to get as much time on the pitch in the final 3 games as possible as match sharpness needs to be build up - we cannot 'risk' maybe 'needing' to throw them in cold for the cup final.

Quick, whilst he is on fire, swap deal with Barca for Henry.

I understand we could swap him for Lenny Henry! It's the only offer we have had!

Now if it was Diop for Lenny Henry, I'd seriously think about it. Glad to see Nugent got a goal, and I hope (though doubt) that he can change HR's mind. I think we'd do better with him starting than Kanu personally.

As long as he doesn't start with Baros up front I don't care. I was really chuffed when he came in but he can't buy a goal at the moment. Hope Harry gives Nugget a chance, be graet if he scores the winning goal.

he deserves a lot more than he has been getting. he came in completly nfit, clearly with something wrong with him, but sonce he got that fixed, and he has done a lot of work on his fitness, he has looked bright everytime he has played.

His left foot is for standing on? Am i the only one who thinks that with the amount of money these players get paid, that they should be able to kick with both feet? I'm not a pro but i know that at the end of the day if a ball comes and i have to hit it, i will at least try but for £30-120,000 a week they should be trained and know how to kick with both feet incase that chance comes along!! I guarantee that there have been a few chances for Nugent (and other strikers) to score a goal but they have missed due to waiting for it to come on their good foot!! As penton said, doesn't feel me with confidence cause he could play the final and miss that one golden opportunity as he didn't take it with his left!!

On this day in history...30th May

A look back at this day in history, and what was happening with Pompey courtesy of our sister site PompeyRama, 30th May.

No Crawley return for Tubbs

Tubbs doesn't have a future at Pompey, he's on the transfer-list but offloading him could be difficult given his wages. These wouldn't be anywhere within Crawley's reach.

Pitfalls of Sheffield Wednesday loanee returning

As Catlin put it 'the gamble' of aiming sign Sheffield Wednesday loanee Lavery has to be one Pompey fans understand. It isn't as cut and dried as saying 'he's a free agent' sign him!

Lassie coming home...well sort of!

A-box-to-box player, capable of defensive duties, with ability to burst forward with intent to make things happen - Diarra is Pompey's man and wants an England return. I jest of course!
