Davis and Mendes to be 'sacrificed' this summer

As much as we probably do not want to hear it the news that Harry Redknapp could be willing to part company with Sean Davis and Pedro Mendes this summer is not really a surprise is it?

We need to build up our squad to continue to move forward and this pair would certainly allow us to do so, but with Davis moving into the final year of his deal and Mendes 'reported' to have put his Sandbanks home up for sale it is looking like one, probably both could be leaving this summer.

This is what Redknapp told The News: 'with Sean, we are looking at the end of the year to see what he wants to do with his contract. As for Pedro, I like him, I have no problems with him.

'But it's like everything in football, you bring people in to strengthen your team and your squad. I want to keep improving the team and that's what I have done. It's nothing personal.

'We have got no one I want to get rid of. There are no players I wish we didn't have here. They are all good players.

'It's rare, really. They are a great bunch of lads, all good players. It is a pleasure to manage them.

'You don't want to get rid of them but it depends if they get better offers and how good the clubs are who want to take them.

'I don't want anyone to go but it happens'.

I expected Davis to leave last summer, but he stayed and forced his way back in and performed fantastically well, but the arrival of others and then injuries and suspensions saw him lose his place and it has been hard for him to get it back. Mendes has found it increasingly hard to get into the squad let alone the starting 11 and has looked nailed on to leave for some time.

I think Mendes is absolutely top drawer so it will be really sad should he move on, but he needs 1st team football and does not look like he will be able to get this here - hopefully he can sign off with a Wembley blockbuster and an FA cup winners medal?

A time comes when you do have to move on, and whilst I do not think we have outgrown the pair in the slightest I think they might have outgrown us, as they are finding it harder and harder to get involved in the squad no matter what others are doing, or not as the case seems to be. So with extra funds possibly generated by their sales I think it is likely to happen to be honest...

Other 'reports' are linking Noe Pamarot with Sunderland whilst Rennes pair, defender John Mensah - again - and striker Jimmy Briand are being linked with moves to Fratton Park - with scouts apparently having been sent to watch them in action for the French side.

I actually like Pedro Mendes. He has got good shots in him. I don't think you should sell him!

For those of us who were at that Man City game & especially if you were lucky enough to be behind the goal & watch that thunderbolt fly in, we will be forever grate to Pedro Mendes. He is engraved in our hearts & minds for kick starting that great escape. He of course has given so much since but 'that goal' has given him legendary status in our recent history. Sadly time moves on & sentiment waits for no man. Davis can count himself unlucky to left out to the African Power houses as his early season form was brilliant.

I would find it all a bit depressing if they both left

They've both been fantastic servants for us but I doubt we'll ever see their best again. Mendes hasn't been the same since Joey Barton hacked him down at Fratton Park.

I think Harry should think about sacrificing Diop as well.

Like I said before lads, send Davis over here!

I have always liked Pedro but I agree with Stillthewhizz that he hasn't been the same since that incident. He was beginning to show signs of being back to his old self though. I wasn't especially impressed with Davis last year, but this season has been a different story, I think he's been great for us this year. Even though if he can't score! (Nor can Diop). But we have to accept that players move on and we always have to strengthen - several times I've wondered what on earth Arry's doing, yet his decisions always seem to come right.

I like both of them and we will need them next season. I can see another case where we sell them too cheaply then Harry will scream out that we are short of midfielders. There are other lesser players we can get rid of but won't get the same sort of money for them to buy Crouch or similar.

I don't see the sense in selling solid squad players like this. We've already got a small squad compared to some of the teams up around us, and it makes no sense to sacrifice them for "better" players, if it means that the squad is still so small that we're struggling to find eleven fit bodies in mid-January. I'm not an idiot, I know the money has to come from somewhere, but how about we sign a few more players who want to come and play football for a competitive side and a few less of the players who are just coming here to double their wages. Ok maybe we'll miss out on a few players with that attitude, but we might also win a few more borderline games if the players who come here are here for the right reaons.

good call PhilTaglia, its a thin line between the two types isnt it - if we get this spot on we'll be laughing...
i would like to keep both, and feel we need to keep both as we need a bigger squad than we have, either than or we have to start ustilising it fully - not just sticking with the same formular week after week. within reason this is ok but if people arent cutting it then the likes of davis and mendes should get a chance - but sadly this isnt happening is it, which is why they will most probably leave.

HR said I dont want to sell em but it is them who want to move on and play regular. Its the same old problem if you aint in your out.

its all about getting the balance right isnt it, you have a squad for a reason but if players arent being used even when others arent playing well that is why they want to move on - to a degree this is what has happened with davis and mendes, they havent really had the chance regardless...

Agreed, Rug, and it's a shame. I would certainly play Davis ahead of Diop. I think Mendes is mentally struggling after the Barton/Thatcher "tackles" and probably needs to drop down a division to get his head right again. We should erect a plaque in memory of the great escape tho'.

Aye, true enough. There are a few players who don't seem able to get a game no matter how badly the first choices perform. Muntari and Diop have both been struggling since they got back from the ACN, and Davies has barely had a glimpse, so I guess I can't blame him wanting out.

I fairness Phil, Munts and Papa haven't been up to it since December, and still we persevere. Davis had a superb start to the season, I can't for the life of me see what's changed. Ok, so Pedro isn't the same since the afore mentioned; but I have thought he's getting there. Lets be honest is it worth getting rid of two superb squad/1st teamers for one striker? if Davis is seemingly good enough for the Toffees then surely he's good enough for us?!? One last thing; how many of you moan when Pedro is named in the team or comes on as a sub?...nope didn't think so! So we get rid of two valuable squad members to buy a striker, and in the busiest season, potentially in our history.

I'm not HR's greatest fan but to be fair, in his reign at Pompey, how many players that he has let go have become stars. O'Neil and Taylor have done as we would have expected and played OK in their new clubs but have not become stars. We could have done with O'Neil at times this season but not every week. Yak was sold purely to get money into the club but, considering his work ethic, has his value increased that much since? Benji's sale was a mistake that has already huanted us. Apart from those who else has been sold or let go that has really shined and would have got us further than the players that replaced them. I can't think of any. So, for the moment, I will go with Harry's judgement.
