Redknapp on defending and Hermann

Harry Redknapp was left a frustrated and disappointed man when reflecting on sky sports on our defeat at Citeh yesterday.

The terrible mess that David James and Sol Campbell got themselves in for the first goal was the start of his disappointment: 'it was an unbelievable game considering the way both sides were set up to play. There were chances galore.

'We gave two terrible goals away and gave ourselves a mountain to climb. They played well and had good movement.

'I think someone has to take responsibility there. One of them has to deal with the situation. It was one of those things'.

I still do not quite know what happened for the first goal to be honest!

At the time in the stadium all seemed fairly safe one minute, the next Citeh were ahead - all I can remember is seeing James out by the touchline and Darius Vassell managing to finish, what was a shot not a pass from Stephen Ireland.

At half time I was able to look at one of the screens by the bar at the City of Manchester Stadium but still could not make out what happened? I was told that James had told Campbell to leave it as he had it covered, but then again others said that it was the other way round… all I know is it was a goal that could have been avoided and up until that point we were the better side without doubt.

Speaking about Hreidarsson's sending off he added: 'it looks like he has got his arm across him. It was a challenge he didn't have to make'.

Seeing the event as it happened, at first glance I was not convinced it was a red card to be honest. Looking at the screen at half time he did have his arm round Vassell's neck so although I still think it was maybe harsh you could see why the ref gave the red - so all in all it was a needless red really.

Even with 10 men we more than gave Citeh a game and I could still see us getting a win let alone a draw but Redknapp's refusal to go more positive at half time probably costs us this to be honest, in my opinion anyway...

All in all though it was a cracking day out, the game was most enjoyable and the Pompey fans - even though we were small in numbers were fantastic. We never stopped singing from beginning to end, and the Citeh fans knew it and on the whole appreciated this.

One of the highlights was Benjani acknowledging us when we sang 'his song' before kick off, clearly changing it to 'he's not gonna score today', which as we know he did. Even when he did score he did not celebrate at all as he promised yet we sang his song again to him again but obviously changed it to how it should be! We were hoping that he 'might' come over to us at full time, but I think that would have been a bit too difficult for him really wouldn't it...

Better we get all these 'bad days' and silly moments out of the way before Cardiff. General opinion seems it was more Sol's fault than Jamo's - I saw in on TV but haven't seen any replays so difficult to say now. Doesn't really matter, as long as they sort it out. The red card was a little harsh, and we should have had a penalty, but then how many decisions have we had this season go our way? Swings and roundabouts and all that. Mountain to climb to reach 5th now, but not impossible.

red card was fair, as if he gave the freekick, it was a red card - and i dont think anyone can doubt the freekick! i think 5th is out of the question though...

nope hermann will be able to play in the final - if selected? aubey will have a chance now wont he, so if he takes it he could well line up in the final at his expence due to his rush of blood...
i wouldnt be so quick to write off 5th guys - yep i know its tough but if villa and everton can play out a draw and we beat blackburn then we would be back up to 6th and only 2pts behind everton, who would still have arsenal and newcastle to play... 'if' we go into the final 2 games 2pts behind everton i fancy us to finish above them tbh... but only if we want it enough...

First goal was a dreadful error on both their parts, nobody took responsibility for it and as Dave said one of then should have row Z it then thye could argue for as long as they liked. 5th is still on but I think (as I predicted in the forum last week) it's Villa and not Everton we'll have to catch

Yeah I agree rug, there is still a realistic chance of getting that 5th place with the run in's the others around us have got. It would be nice to play for 5th and go to Wembley knowing that win or lose we are still in Europe. Regarding Herman, although a stupid challenge old Vaseline grabed his wrist, which dragged Herman down with him and made it look worse and as it wasn't a clear goal making chance he should not have been sent off.

I Sky+'d it and Sol is definately telling James to get back, but as James doesnt Sol leaves it too, and one of them should have dealt with it. I love james, but i think he was at fault, Sol is Captain, and if he tells the Goalie to get back on his line, the Golaie should, and then Sol could have put it out to old trafford or somewhere other than on the pitch. I thought benjani had his best game since leaving, and its probably due to him knowing our defence better than anyone outside of Pompey. He used hi knowledge and had a great game. In fact although we lost, i thought it was a good preformance all in all. I think Villa play Evertone Saturday, so if villa win or its a draw, we are back in with a shout as long as we beat Blackburn of course, but if Everton win i think its a tall order to get 5th. Love the Article, dont agree with the comment about Harry should have gone more attacking though, as being down to 10, going too attacking would have left us more open, and we dont want to lose the points and gamage the goal difference, as we hit the uprights, and crossbar i think it was just not our day.
