'Mercenary' Chimbonda on HR's list

Pascal Chimbonda is another name that has been added to our 'summer shopping list', with 'reports' saying that Harry Redknapp is at the 'head of the queue' for his signature this summer with Spurs looking likely to sell.

I would not be against his signing per se but I do not like his 'reported attitude' to be honest.

I know you cannot always believe what you read in the press but he does seem a bit of a mercenary to say the least! He is quite open with his thoughts that he will 'go where the money is' - if that is what he has actually said?

His primary position is right back, but do we really need another right back seen as we have one of the best right backs in the country in Glen Johnson. However Chimbonda is versatile and can play as a left back or as a central defender too so would give further options.

My main worry though is he 'will not come cheap' wages wise, so for the money we would have to give him you could not really see him as merely a 'squad player' could you? The thing that I would most like though is hearing 'what's that coming over the hill is it Chimbonda, is it Chimbonda' belted out around Fratton Park - that would be cool, but it isn't really enough to warrant a signing...

My own feelings are I am unsure on this one to be honest, it could have some truth, which if it does I am 50:50 on how I feel about it - but at the end of the day Redknapp is the manager so it does not matter what I think!

A regular in the French side and a good attacking full-back but does he fit the bill? Looked great down here for Wigan two years ago but I am unconvinced,
eastneydave
Fantastic player but too much trouble and youve already got Johnson in that position...leave this one be Pompeys
worbo
That signing would please the wife....not
pompey4me
Pie in the sky, chimb wants a move and his agent has obviously started pimping him out, off to Newcastle with him!
paultsmouth
ageeing with Dave, I thought he was great with Wigan..., and scored against us to if I recall correctly. I'd like to see him here - we shouldn't listen to all the reports about him..., if it's true he's only saying what most players privately feel in any case.
ChrisW
Serious attitude problem so no thanks. However is arry being clever bringing him in and moving jonno onto right wing to sort that problem?
bluedr
No thanks we have glen and need to buy a proper left back, a right winger and a striker. He is neither
imazav
Totally agree with imazav why buy a right back/centre back when we need a left back , right winger , striker . plus if we did buy someone from tottenham buy kaboul, boeting or huddlestone as these are all young and have a bright future.
stfc ballboy
Totally agree, lets save our money for the needed positions. Although "HR" does not always see it this way.

i have just seen on another website that west ham are going to have to sell ljungberg, green, ashton, neil and dyer because the new chairmen wants there finance to go down.Do you reckon we should go for ljungberg/dyer and ashton ?
stfc ballboy
ljundberg - too old, green - good addition, would be #2 and would see ashdown leave, ashton - good addition, not guaranteed 1st team place here if we sign baros/lopez/etc, dyer - unsure, we have a lot of midfield players yet he is/has been quite good. problem is he is injury prone. one issue we have is finance, we would have to sell to buy them and I cant think of many players id like to sell?!
pompey--pessimist
as for my opinion on chimbonda ... he tore us apart in our game with spurs and would be a welcomed addition - he wouldnt be guaranteed 1st team either.
pompey--pessimist
I second worbo's thoughts.

Ljundberg...def to old as pessinist said, Chimbonda & Ashton would do me nicely, both top quality!
CharlieChimes
Pessimist, you're right hedid tear us apart v.spuds, even worse for me was the game v.wigan a couple of seasons ago. I spent the whole game calling hin chumbawumba, only for him to rip us to shreads and score two goals....mortified, how low????? that was the worst performance i've seen by us in years. However his class did shine through. Have to admit, I can't stand the guy or his ethics tho..total scumbag
pentonpompey
Having said that, if some one offered me say another £80 a day would i go?...Hello!?! of course i would; so are they so different? The difference is we love and care about their employers, no one gives a s@it about me
pentonpompey
Oh and before some wag says £80, i'm talking about me, not chumbawumba...Ha ha
pentonpompey
good player, completely owned us the last few years, attitude problem. thing is, its like cudicini AND cech being at chelsea, why have chimbonda when u already have johnson? (bluedr harry wouldnt move glen out on the right wing now, he had the chance to but put lauren there..). more importantly, if he does join, the automatic live on....
jbaker
as said im not against it, i can see the merits but im also not sure - will he dislodge johnson? where would this leave johnson's future? if signed as a left back what would be the point - we may as well keep using hermann, or probably the more sensible choice would be to buy a 'proper left back!'... he would make excellent cover, but on his salary he wouldnt be a 'back-up' player - nor would he want this...
pompeyrug
johnson has been linked with man u because they need a right back, cimbonda is a good replacement if we have to sell johno .
pompeysno.9
i know arry likes spurs rejects this is just getting silly now. youl be linked with chas n dave next!!
HuddersfieldYiddo
Havn't we got Chas n Dave doing our Wmbley song? As for Chimpo, I doubt it. Nicky Shorey for left back!
storagematt
Nicky Shorey...good call Matt, I hadn't given him a thought but a fine addition he'd be, Don't think he'd break the bank either
pentonpompey
Nicky Shorey is off on a free at the end of the season. Last season he had a few England call ups. West Ham have sounded him out but with their current culling of the existing team, they may not pursue. He could be ours, Harry get phoning!!!
