Pompey progression 'amazes' James

Pompey progression 'amazes' James

When David James left Man City to sign for us in the summer of 2006 he had just been part of 2006 world cup with England, whilst I believe Man City had just narrowly missed out on European qualification - I think a missed penalty in their final game of the season with Boro proving the difference? Pompey on the other hand had just embarked on our 'great escape'...

Thinking about these things it is little wonder that James has admitted that the progress Pompey have made since he signed has 'amazed' him: 'when I arrived at Pompey I could never have envisaged the progress I have made nor the progress that the club has made as a whole.

'It was a great move for me and I liked the club from the first day I signed.

'Last season was great. It was very positive and productive, but this year we have really moved on and it was important that we achieved that.

'With the acquisitions that we have made and the players we've got, the team has been tremendous. The amazing thing is that the team did that well last season without losing too many players'.

To be honest I never tire of saying 'I cannot believe how far we have come'. I know Harry Redknapp likes to remind us from time to time with his 'we were playing Grimsby - and so on - just 5 years ago' speeches, but the transformation in the past couple of years alone has been incredible.

Can anyone honestly say hand on heart that when we did enjoy our great escape that they thought we would be in the top 10 the season after, or be close to the top 5 the one after that and in the FA cup final?

From the minute we did survive in 2005/06 I had this feeling we would then move onwards and upwards, but have to confess I did not think it would be quite so dramatic.

All being well I can see no reason why we cannot continue our climb, but I am not expecting anything, I am just hoping for it and will continue to enjoy every moment of this success - it has been a long time in coming so lets bask in this glory and enjoy it, we have earned it!

can still not figure out why we let James leave Villa. He would have been a legend by now and we've never had better since. We brought in Peter Schmeichel which was more a publicity thing as he was at the end of his career. Ho and indeed hum!

Amazing is an understatement I think.. although many of us thought that we were on the up after the Great Escape I agree with Rug that very few (or indeed anybody) would have predicted we'd come this far so quickly BUT we have to keep building as were are only as good as we are today .. look at Bolton who would have thought they'd be where they are.... I thing I like most about the article is Jameo's modesty.... after all he is probably the player that has contributed the most to where we are today .. without him we couldn't have done it... Is there another player we can really say that about ?

right you are Real Deal - change made... we're always crap in whatever tournament it is anyway, if we even make it!

its been a team effort, but you are spot on Chix jamo has without bout cortribute the most to our dramatic rise - what a signing he has proved, 'arry's best for pompey probably? arguably 'arry's best signing with any club...

Chixy is is dead right. I expected us to push mon after the Great Escape but mid table obscurity wiould have sufficed. Now we are top six and Cup finalist and it is incredible. Jamo has played a huge part in that progress without doubt and deserves all the acollades and his England place back.

Ons small step for man, one giant step for Pompey. From bottom 6 to top 6. Keep it there.

MotM in poor Notts County show...Cambridge next

There wasn't too much to cheer from the Notts County defeat was there, well certainly not the 2nd half at Fratton Park but one plus was seen as Amine Linganzi for Pompey.

Double figure aim for Baker

Goals are in the game of Baker; we've seen this already as the midfielder has scored four for Pompey since his arrival from MK Dons in the summer. His aim is at least 10-goals.
